    1. [MON] Alexander MAYO (1856 - 1900) Police Constable in Bradford, Yorkshire
    2. Peter Ferreira
    3. Here is a MAYO family group, living in Bradford, Yorkshire. I hope it will be useful to some of you MAYO researchers out there. Alexander MAYO, son of John MAYO and Elizabeth WINZAR was born in Broadwey, Dorset, about 1856; bp. there on February 10th., 1856. Alexander 14, was a blacksmith, living with his parents in Broadwey, for the 1871 census. In Q3 of 1880, in Wigan district, Alexander MAYO married Alice ARSTALL. At the 1881 and the 1891 censuses, Alexander was a Police Constable in Bradford, Yorkshire. Alexander 44 died in Bradford in Q3 of 1900; Alice 64 died there in Q1 of 1921. Alexander and Alice had issue: 1. John Henry MAYO, born about Q2 of 1888 in Bradford, Yorks. John H. 25 died there in Q2 of 1913. 2. Herbert MAYO, born about Q3 of 1890 in Bradford, Yorks. In Q2 of 1915, in Bradford district, Herbert married Hetty SCOTT. Herbert and Hetty had issue. 3. Rose Elizabeth MAYO, born about Q2 of 1895 in Bradford. In Q3 of 1915, in Bradford, West Yorks Riding, England, Rose married Walter GLEDHILL. [NOTE: Several other Mayo births and deaths were also registered on FreeBMD, in the 1890s, in Bradford district, Yorks. Some or all probably belong to this family.] This family had ancestors in Frome St. Quintin, Dorset, back in the 1600s and 1700s. I would be pleased to share MAYO family history notes with any descendant or researcher of this family, all cousins of mine. Best wishes. Peter Ferreira Toronto, Canada Mayo Genealogist

In particular you mentioned the Hugh Wallis site for IGI Batch Numbers. I wondered if you and other Listers have come across a rather newer version of this IGI batch number business at www.Archersoftware.co.uk A click on 'Links' in the navigation column on the left of the homepage reveals a list that includes IGI Batch Numbers plus an update on all the recent changes in the IGI and an updated version of Hugh Wallis's Batch Numbers. 3. I have joined MonGenes, having been completely open about my involvement with the Glamorgan List, FreeBMD and Glamorgan FHS. The Mongenes database of parish record transcriptions is password protected. It is well organised and it is possible to see what parishes are covered, for what events, and for what dates. The search facility is useful and produces results in a helpful form. I was pleasantly surprised to find the marriage of my great-grandmother's brother, and the baptisms of most of his children, in parishes I would not have thought of looking in. I do not know whether all the data that used to be on Mike John's site is now on Mongenes. I suspect not. I see that there seem to be some Monmouthshire transcriptions appearing on FreeReg, the most obvious place to put parish register transcriptions which can be freely searched by anyone. FreeReg provides information about which parishes are transcribed, for what dates. Familysearch.org also has quite a selection of Monmouthshire parish records. You start by 'browse by location' and 'United Kingdom and Ireland' on the home page, then select 'Wales' and then you find 'Wales,Monmouthshire Parish Records' . The coverage is a bit patchy, and it is not easy to find which parishes are covered and over what dates. In most cases the data is free, but in some cases you only seem to find a year for an event, and have to look at the findmypast image to see the full data. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Menu takes you into the IGI records held on Familysearch, parish by parish with years shown. This link does not show the full extent of registers available from Familysearch via the 'Wales,Monmouthshire Parish Records' dataset. Another place to look for a few transcriptions of parish registers is The Ogre at http://www.cefnpennar.com/ I suspect that the cost of maintaining the large numbers of images of gravestones that used to be on that site may have proved excessive, so some datasets are now being sold to maintain the site. He now has some Monmouthshire Catholic records. What does not seem to exist for any county that I am aware of is a total list of what parish registers are available, where, either for free or by subscription. Such a list would be valuable, as it might prevent the same records being transcribed repeatedly - like Llandenny baptisms, where my great-grandmother's cousins appear in a variety of searchable sources. 2. The Lewis family
    3. G'day Everybody Many thanks for your prompt help and interest in my problem with Sarah Ann Lewis. Your time, trouble and enthusiasm were not wasted because it prevented me from going down the wrong branch of the Lewis family tree. I suppose I knew in my bones that the Sarah Ann Lewis that I had found couldn't be my great-grandmother. She had money, in fact quite a lot of money for that time. I have my Sarah Ann in the 1901 census in Pontypool aged 37 but there the trail ends. Coincidentally, she did have a brother William but there was no Miriam in her family. She had nine siblings, five sisters and four brothers but no Miriam amongst them. So the hunt will continue although with the plethora of Lewis families in the Eastern Valleys bothy then and now I will have to use a very fine tooth comb to find the right one. Once again, the Monmouthshire list has come up trumps, and produced a result, even if it wasn't the one I'd hoped for. Regards, Best Wishes for the coming winter months. Keep safe and warm and in good health. Ray Lewis Hazelmere Western Australia
