    2. thanks for your help .we are new to this !! william hughes Family bible says born in chepstow in sep 1855.the only birth we can fit is in sep 1851.we know for definite he died in cwm in 1906.he married Deborah Jones in 1891 in brynmawr.the marriage certificate says he was a widower. The family bible says his wife died so he came to this area then so we are looking in chepstow and bristol area for 1st wife .We think we have the right family in 1881 in chepstow .You have to log in samuel Bennet, born 1854 in the Cape of Good Hope to get the image. It fits in with 1861'census but we can't find him in 1871. It sheds new light on what my GGrandmother (and her sister and several other fellow female lodgers) may have been doing as "ironstone fillers" in Blaina c1861. 3. OK so I have been watching the messages and trying to figure out why some are arriving without anything in them and I think I have one reason now. Some of you are using incredimail, or something like it, where you can have a lovely background picture and all sorts of whistles and bells on your messages. unfortunately Rootsweb servers only accept plain text messages so they are stripping out everything including your information and then passing on the blank message. PLease can you make sure that before you send the message you click on format on the menu bar and then plain text. this should at least give the message more chance of surviving the server snippers and will reduce the amount of time I spend sorting out messages that have been held for no apparent reason. Ann Macey still here in windy Newport Gwent

    2. It's much like the job of a coal miner, I suspect, although the product is different - ironstone was one of the main iron ores but contains less iron than, for instance, haematite. 3. Hi List, can someone recommend somewhere where I can find details of a description of a the job of an iron stone miner please. Ggrandfather SMITH was one whilst living in Pontypool, before his marriage to my ggrandmother )Mary Ann COLEMAN) and afterwards around Ebbw Vale before he migrated out to Queensland in 1887. Many thanks, Michael McAllister

My GGGrandmother worked for a time c1861 as a girl in Blaina, Aberystruth, MON as an ironstone filler, whose job as I perceive it was to fill wagons or other transporting devices with the ironstone hewed by miners. This link will take you a website having much information about Ironstone Mines and Miners: _Tom Leonard Mining Museum_ (http://www.ironstonemuseum.co.uk/) The Cleveland mines described in that website were in northeast England, but I expect that much of the information applies also to the ironstone mines of Wales. 3. It would be helpful wouldn't it? and the list admins have said this on lots of occasions. It takes time for the rewording of bounce messages to travel through the channels that have developed at rootsweb. All I can suggest is that anyone who wants to make this point can go to the rootsweb home page www.rootsweb.com and click on Help on the menu bar and then send a message to the staff asking for this to be done. If they see messages from list members as well as list admins it might make a difference. Ann

    3. Dear Ann I understand the reason why Rootsweb took this course of action, as outlined in your own email. It would, however, be even more helpful if the sender of any email written in HTML were to receive an auto-reply telling them that their posting had not been delivered, and why, so that they could take corrective action by resending in plain text, and then list members like Ray wouldn't be so perplexed. Perhaps you could feed this idea 'back up the line'? Robert -----Original Message----- From: monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ann Macey Empty messages sometimes happen when the message is sent using HTML - If you are using Outlook or Outlook express then click on Format on the menu bar and then click on plain text before writing your message. This should ensure that it arrives with us as it left you. Rootsweb long ago realised that viruses can't live in plain text they need the coding of HTML so they set up their mail servers to work with plain text. I don't really understand it I am just quoting the stuff I was told eleven years ago when I first became a list admin.
