    3. Because of the many changes of county boundaries over the years it is difficult for me to describe what was Monmouthshire around 1800. I use http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ when I want to look at parts of the old county. Gwent FHS has a map of the parishes of the county available and also one of the Churches - contact me off list for further details. Ann

    3. Ann: Your last message raises a question that I don't think has been addressed on this list, at least that I recall in the last five or six years: I see references to "old Monmouthshire" as opposed to today's Monmouthshire, as in your message re. new Gwent Society publications. The references I see to "Gwent" I understand as a brief realignment of boundaries and renaming ca. 1974 that was latter abandoned in favor of what is Monmouthshire today. However, as some of us are researching in the 1800s and before, could you roughly describe -- or suggest a source or map which indicates it -- what "old" Monmouthshire more or less encompassed? I am finding records and references for areas/places that seem today to be in Glamorganshire, for instance, not Monmouthshire. Thanks, Sally

    1. Re: [MON] Hatch, Tregare
    2. Hello Marian, Being that the dates of his children who were baptised 1779/1785, all were born before Civil Registrations of July 1837 and John Hatch possibly being born himself around 1750, he would not have been recorded on the Census of 1841. It would be a search of the Parish Records to assist you further, possibly another list member may be able to let you know if there are any parish records that have been transcribed and you are able to purchase. Regards Barbara

    3. Hi Ray, You could do worse than try the Kelly's Directory for each town to give you a picture of the range of employment in the area at the time. This is available online. If you put Kelly's Directory into Google you'll get there. Of course, the GENUKI pages for the county also give you an overview as well as providing various links to take you elsewhere. Given the difficulty of tracking down books on specific places overseas, you might well do better ferreting about online. If I come up with anything more specific, I'll let you know. Of course, the coal board also has various websites detailing things like the names of those injured or killed in mining accidents. Some of these are specific to other mining areas in the UK, but many are national in scope. Again, "coal mining (name of town)" into Google yields quite a good start. Regards, Sian Mackey.

    3. PLease make sure that if you wish to respond to Greg Price's message that you DO NOT click on reply or reply all because this sends the message to the list and NOT to Greg. Can I also remind you that clicking reply and sending your answer as well as the original message to the list is considered very poor netiquette because it means that search engines will throw up hits for each copy of the original message in the archives. If only 20 members of the list send back the complete original message as well as their answer it soon means that there could be thousands of hits for the same thing - this is pretty darned frustrating for anyone who is doing a search. Please could everyone cut out all except the query they are replying to. This is also the best way to ensure that your message doesn't exceed the size limit for Rootsweb because that causes messages to disappear into the cyber vortex never to be seen again. Ann Macey

    3. G'day List Thanks for those who shared their thoughts with me about the Eastern valeys. Unfortunately the publication "Coal Society: a History of the South Wales Mining Valleys, 1840-1980" doesn't seem to be available here, at least not in any of the major libraries but trawling the web has thrown up some interesting material from which I can draw. Thanks again Ray Lewis Hazelmere Western Australia Surname interests: Davies; Jones; Lewis

    2. Hello Bella, I have located the Census for you Census 1871 Mary Williams age 44 M Housekeeper born Pembrokeshire Mary Williams age 18 U/M daur born Monmouthshire Ebbw Vale Mary Jane Evans age 12 grand-daur born Monmouthshire Ebbw Vale John Evans age 6 grand-son born Monmouthshire Ebbw Vale Sarah Jane Evans age 3 born Monmouthshire Ebbw Vale 15 California Row Town of Ebbw Vale. If you have obtained a copy of Sarah Jane's birth certificate this will relate to you the connection to the Williams, it could be that the mother of the Evans childrens was Mary Williams daughter and that is why they are listed as grandchildren, and being that they were lodgers in 1881 the mother may have died after Sarah Jane was born. Regards Barbara
