Hello there, An old map of Newport shows 'CAMBRIAN WHARF' adjacent to where the old Cambrian Foundry was sited. Going up the river it's on your left hand side just past the docks and on the high point of the last big river bend before hitting the 'Straight' to Newport Bridge. Good luck Tom
On the 1917 OS map of Newport it shows lots of Wharves along the river. One that might be of note i on the Town side of the river downstream of the town bridge. Where Corn street used to run into Skinner Street take a straight line across the railway and the canal and you will find Corn Mill or Cinderhill wharf. There were many other Wharves along the river, not just those where the present docks are today. Ann Macey
I assume you have looked at www.old-maps.co.uk or else the rather more user-friendly http://www.british-history.ac.uk/map.asp to look at a detailed map of Newport Docks area in the 1880s. Not all wharves kept the same name but there may be a works or street with that name nearby. Also worth starting with GENUKI and trying to track down any history online of Newport Docks. You might also find some interesting stuff by searching for '1848 cholera'. Cholera actually hit South Wales much harder in 1849 than 1848 so '1849 cholera Newport'. Here we are http://www.newportpast.com/nfs/chronology.htm may help. A good read anyway. Jeff
Sue I know of no Wharf by that name in Newport. Can you supply any more details about the ship? Also, if this is a GGGgf are you sure you mean 1948? I've had the DC emailed to me and it looks like ' Cumbriane' Wharf. I've looked through all my books and can't find any record of it, but wondered if it was supposed to be Cambrian Wharf as we have a Cambrian Road etc. The g/g/g/g-father of my postee died of cholera in 1948 aboard his ship, moored at this wharf. Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance Sue Doherty (Newport)

Hi, If you are a HARRIES/HARRIS/HARRISS, you, or your relatives, may be interested in the following research. There is a project which is studying the DNA of HARRISes (and all variants) around the world at:- http://www.harrisdna.org/ It also has an entry on Wikipedia at:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HARRIS_Surname_DNA_Project Its aim is to give genealogy researchers direction in finding their origin, which is often difficult with a common surname such as HARRIES/HARRIS/HARRISS. Note that before 1800 spellings often changed as people moved around so many people with different spellings of HARRIS, HARRISS, HARRIES, etc may be related. Take a look at the URL and decide for yourself. At minimum you should do the 37 marker test which, as well as seeing if you are related to any of the existing families, will indicate whether your DNA is Anglo-saxon, Celtic, Norse Viking, etc. As most HARRISes originated from France/Britain/Spain most will be anglo-saxon but you never know, you may well be more exotic. The project is of particular interest to HARRISes in Wales as one of the original Norman HARRIS families is thought to orginate there (see the Wikipedia link). There may well be descendants of this family still in Wales to this very day. Best Wishes and please let other HARRISes know about this project. Thanks:-)
The Parish church is dedicated to St Tudor (English spelling). The Gwent FHS have two CDs available BCD13 Mynyddislwyn Baptisms 1815 - 1907 and BCD14 Mynyddislwyn Marriages 1885 - 1907 They also have a microfiche with the Memorial inscriptions fot St Tudor's and also for the two non-conformist burial grounds. Contact me off list for more details - please don't just click reply to this message because that will ONLY go to the list. Ann Macey

They coudn't find a record and advised me to try MYNYDD ISLWYN Cemetery/churchyard. I cannot find contact details online for this church and i really am confused about which churches are where and the place names just confuse me greatly! Could someone possibly help me by looking in the records for this church or perhaps help me find the contact details for it. Hello, I myself have searched the full death index records on Ancestry and there is no death record for a William David Powel in 1924. Have you obtained his death certificate to inform you of his age at death, this would tell you the name of the informant and would possibly give you a clue as to the address of that person who may also have lived at Glen View. Ynysddu comes under the Parish of Mynyddislwyn and the records are kept at Gwent Records office and the registration of the Death would be at Newport Registry Office. And regarding Electoral Lists for 1924 these again would need to be searched in person either at Newport Main Library or at the Records Office in Cwmbran.I do understand that this would be impossible for you because of being overseas so I have written contact details below for you. Gwent Records Office County Hall Cwmbran. Gwent. NP44 2XH Telephone 01633 644886 email _gwent.records@torfaen.gov.uk_ (mailto:gwent.records@torfaen.gov.uk) It may be of benefit to you if you email them and give them the details regarding your query. Regards Barbara
Thankyou to Shirley Price-Jones and Ann Macey for your suggestions re my Baptist Minister DAVIES relative. I will give both a try. Regards, Carol in Canada
A little reminder here that when giving information about our ancestors or asking for help it is much easier for everyone if we put the sruname in capital letters - especially with some of the welsh names we have to deal with. This way it is clear that we are talking about William LLOYD and not Lloyd WILLIAM Ann Macey List Admin
