    3. Many male children were still wearing "frocks" ( smocks) until they were about five years of age up to 1920's after which they were "breeched" into trousers. This was common in working class homes. You do not state the approximate ages of the children. I have a photo of my Uncle dressed in a "dress". Smock? 3. Hi, Jane, I'm sorry to say that I don't have any of the records I listed, other than those of my own family. Unfortunately, I don't have any Murphy's or Desmond's either. I had a quick look on www.ancestry.co.uk and can't find any of the names you mention in Monmouthshire on any of the censuses. It would help if you could provide as much information as you have, especially the names and ages/dates of birth of the children, ages/dates of birth for their parents and the parents occupations. I don't know if you have any information of the later generations, but it is usually a lot easier to start with yourself and work backwards. I hope that is of some use and that your research goes well. 3. John, The Gwent Record Office has just provided me with the following list of Catholic Records in its collection: Abergavenny, Our Lady and St. Michael's Baptisms 1740 - 1852, 1864 - 1920 Marriages 1839 - 1854, 1864 - 1963 Deaths 1820 - 1908 Burials 1894 - 1967 (also Index to Registers of Baptisms, 1864 - 1941) Dukestown, Church of the Immaculate Conception Marriages 1983 - 1997 Monmouth, St. Mary Baptisms 1791-1979 (including Perthir 1791 - 1797) Marriages 1799 - 1918 Newport, St. Mary's, Stow Hill Baptisms 1835 - 1915 Marriages 1836 - 1919 Deaths 1838 - 1905 Newport, St. Michael's Baptisms 1888 - 1919 Perthir (merged with Monmouth 1818) Baptisms 1751 - 1818 Pontypool, St. Albans Baptisms 1836 - 1923 Marriages 1848 - 1891 Usk, Saints David Lewis and Francis Xavier Baptisms 1876 - 1947 Marriages 1876 - 1955 (both registers are closed from 1916 onwards) Mike John's site also has details of Catholic Records: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~monfamilies/myfamily-history.htm Michael Gandy's book 'Catholic missions and registers 1700-1880' lists the locations of all known original records and gives details of any copies as at 1993. Volume 3 (of 6) covers Wales & the West of England, which is superseded by the Gwent Record Office list above. The Monmouthshire section is four pages long, but I am willing to try to answer any questions. Most of the register are still with the parish priests. The Archdiocese of Cardiff, which includes Gwent, has its own website giving the parishes: www.rcadc.org I hope this helps. I have had great fun trying to find my Catholic relatives. Peter Williams

    3. Hello Ray in Australia What's the weather like over there?? Thanks for your very helpful suggestion, I will pass it on to Owen since he might just know. Well, anyway, who can remember their mobile phone number ? I keep mine on the list of names on the phone (under another name) and then I can look at it if necessary. GRIN. Who also can remember all the PIN nos. we have to have these days? Or don't you have those in Australia? Obviously your dad had a good memory!! Mine too but he was in reserved occupation so had no army number but could remember his dad's from the 14-18 war. Thanks for your help. Regards Dawn dawn.cumbley@virgin.net

I can't remember my mobile telephone number but I haven't forgotten my service number. I know my father knew his 'last 4' in his 90th year and he had received them when he was about 20. "DURING 1941-44 Bill (Taffy) Lloyd and I served together at #34 SFTS Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, but I lost track of him when we were both sent back to England in 1944 having served our three year tour of duty." He would be around 80 now. Any ideas as to how to trace him? Regards Dawn dawn.cumbley@virgin.net

    2. Hello Dawn, I did answer this query on Glamorgan list when Owen asked for information of his friend, not knowing where in Wales William came from and whether or not he may have returned to Canada, it's a wide search. It may be possible which I had not thought of before if Owen contact the UK Armed Forces and query where William came from and they may be able to assist him further. Regards Barbara

    1. [MON] LEWIS family of Marshfield & St Woolos 18th century
    2. Sanders, Bob (DECWL - BDD)
    3. Bryan Lewis and I have spent some time recently researching this LEWIS family, from which Bryan is descended. The family connection with Monmouthshire seems to have started with Edmond LEWIS who was born at Eglwysilan in 1700 son of Lewis EDWARD. By the 1730s he was farming at Marshfield, but also had several grants of land in Whitchurch, Glam. & land in Bassaleg. In the 1730s he married Sarah Lawrence and in 1743 they had a son Edmond. This Edmond married as his second wife in 1771 at St Woolos Anne NICHOLAS (nee BARBER) daughter of Adam Barber, Mayor of Newport, and they lived in St Woollos in the 1770s but by 1783 they were farming Deri Farm (Rhiwbina), Whitchurch. Their son Edmund was born at St Woolos in 1774, married Rachel JOHN of Pentyrch, and the family continued to farm the Deri for many years. The first Edmond Lewis had brothers Lewis Edward of the Green, Michaeston super Ely, Rowland Lewis of Bwlch y Cwm, Eglwysilan and William Lewis of Whitchurch, and two sisters Margaret & Ann. There are several references to the family in the Diary of William Thomas 1762 - 1795. We would be very interested to hear from anyone with an interest in this family. 3. Good Evening, My grandfather, father and aunt returned to Wales from Canada on 1st November 1935 on board the vessel Duchess of York. arriving Liverpool from Montreal on 9th november 1935 . Although we have a copy of the entry in the ship's manifest stating the address in Wales that they were going to, the address that they left in Canada is not given. WE believe that this information may be available in the National Records of Canada in Ottawa. If they are it would be appreciated if there is anybody in this area could look up this information.
