    3. Having checked the Ancestry image of the GRO index in question I agree volume XXVI (26) page 19 not 17 as in my earlier email based on FreeBMD database. The FreeBMD transcription was from a poorer image of the page. I will place a correction request with FreeBMD. 3. The General Register Office (GRO) index shows the following information Aston. Mary. District Abergavenny. Vol. XXV1 page 19. September qtr. 1847 This certificate can be ordered online by going to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ You have to register with them and then you can order the birth, marriage and death certificates of any of your ancestors. The cost is 7GBpounds per certificate. This is the best place to order certificates because any other website is a middleman or go-between who will charge you money for doing something you can do yourself. Good luck and happy hunting Ann Macey ----- Original Message ----- From: <GG1531@aol.com> To: <MONMOUTHSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> > Mary ASTON was born late 1847 or early 1848? 3. The best way to find registration of births marriages and deaths in England and Wales after 1st July 1837 up to about 1910 or so is www.freebmd.org.uk . There seem to have been two births of a Mary ASTON in South Wales in the time period you mention. In September quarter of 1847 Mary ASTON birth was registered in Abergavenny registration district, reference volume 26 page 17 . Several areas near Trevethin were in that district before 1861, particularly the parishes covering Blaenavon. In March quarter of 1849 a Mary ASTON birth was registered in Merthyr Tydfil district, a little further away, volume 26 page 421 There were marriages of someone called Thomas ASTON in Monmouth reg.district vol 26 p96 in December quarter 1838 and in June quarter 1838 in Hereford reg. district, not far away. I have a strong suspicion that Mary was born in Blaenavon to a family that seems to have moved between the Forest of Dean, Blaenavon and Trevethin, all iron-mining areas at the time. In 1851 this family was in Blaenavon, in the part of the town in Llanfoist parish Thomas ASTON Head Mar 40 Ironstone Miner b Gloucester Coleford Elizabeth wife Mar 45 b Mon Llanviangel [sic] Emily daur unm 23 b Mon Trevethin Thomas son unm 21 Ironstone Miner b Mon Trevethin Martha daur unm 18 b Gloucester Littledean John son 12 Ironstone Haulier b Mon Trevethin Henry son 9 scholar b Mon Llanfoist Phillip son 6 scholar b Mon Llanfoist Mary daur 3 b Mon Llanfoist Llanfoist was in Abergavenny district. If Emily was 23 that places the marriage back in the 1820s and so before civil registration. There are several Monmouthshire parishes called Llanfihangel. The census reference is HO107; Piece: 2447; Folio: 25; Page: 42 >From the places of birth the family might have been in Llanfoist or Trevethin in 1841 census. In 1861 the younger children are still with parents at 301 Chapel Row Llanfoist, Blaenavon, though Thomas and young Henry are now coal miners, and Phillip a coal haulier (as the ironstone has probably run down) and Elizabeth is shown as born at Llanfihangel Torymynydd, Monmouthshire. You can look forward to seeing the place your ancestors worked at, as Big Pit, Blaenavon, originally an Iron Mine and later a Coal mine, is now a museum and part of a World Heritage Site. Just Google 'Big Pit Blaenavon'. The census reference for the younger children is RG9; Piece: 3995; Folio: 75; Page: 17 and the parents are on the bottom of the previous page RG9; Piece: 3995; Folio: 74; Page: 16 To be sure you have the right family you need to check the occupation of her father on the marriage certificate, and obtain the birth certificate. You may also need to check other possible people with similar names in censuses to make sure this one is the only one with father Thomas in the Trevethin area. Hope this helps Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: <GG1531@aol.com> To: <MONMOUTHSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 5:00 PM Subject: [MON] Surname: ASTON - Given: Mary > Mary ASTON was born late 1847 or early 1848? 3. Here is a link that will explain the whole thing and I've included an excerpt from this site. http://www.pb.org/pbdocs/chhist5.html#Succession_in_Wales Formal records of the origin of Christianity in Wales are lost in antiquity. However, a single legendary account is generally cited by Welsh Baptist historians. The following description of the ancient roots of the Welsh Baptists is taken from History of the Welch Baptists, by Jonathan Davis, written in 1835. "About fifty years before the birth of our Savior, the Romans invaded the British Isles, in the reign of the Welch king Cassebellun; but having failed, in consequence of other and more important wars made peace with them, and dwelt among them many years. During that period many of the Welsh soldiers joined the Roman army, and many families from Wales visited Rome; among them there was a certain woman named Claudia, who was married to a man named Pudence. At the time, Paul was sent a prisoner to Rome, and preached there in his own hired house, for the space of two years, about the year of our Lord 63. Pudence and Claudia his wife, who belonged to Caesar's household, under the blessing of God on Paul's preaching, were brought to the knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus, and made a profession of their Christian religion. These together with other Welshmen, among the Roman soldiers, who had heard that the Lord was gracious, exerted themselves on behalf of their countrymen in Wales, who were at that time idolaters." Davis continues, "How rapidly did the mighty gospel of Christ fly abroad! The very year 63, when Paul, a prisoner, was preaching to a few individuals, in his own hired house in Rome, the seed sowed there is growing in the Isle of Britain." The Apostle Paul concludes his second epistle to Timothy with greetings from some of the saints gathered with him in Rome. Among those mentioned are Pudence and Claudia. Paul's mention of these Welsh Christians casts some doubt as to their being in Wales in 63 A. D. since it is believed Paul wrote II Timothy in 66 A.D.. However, the identities of Pudence and Claudia are well documented. Claudia was the daughter of Welsh King Caratacus. Pudence was Claudia's husband. Armitage believed he was a Roman Senator. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael P. A fascinating story Diane, and the church is certainly involved in Welsh history in certain ways, though as John pointed out, from the description given in this article, it's technically in England, not in Wales. It has certainly been a Welsh church at times, and was well involved in the history of Christianity in Wales, and is not very far over the border, so it would still seem to be germane to Welsh Churches and Chapels. 3. Good morning list. I am looking for the family of a Mary SCANNELL born abt 1834 in Ireland. She was the daughter of an Edward SCANNELL listed as deceased on her 1852 marriage certificate. She married John BUCKLEY in Merthyr Tydfil. They and their children arrived in Pittsburgh, PA from Merthyr Tydfil by 1873. Although there are several Scannell/ Scannal/ Scanlon persons in Merthyr Tydfil I have not found any to be a sibling. I am also studying my HAYES family also from Cork, Ireland who lived on Iron St. in Tredegar. That Hayes family also came to Pittsburgh in 1877. There are 2 marriages connecting the BUCKLEY/ SCANNELL and HAYES family, both in Pittsburgh. I am also aware of a Mary SCANNELL as witness to another wedding in Tredegar. There is now enough reason to look closely at the Tredegar, SCANNELL. Looking at the archives I see others who have discussed SCANNELL in Tredegar. My first attempt at a connecting email failed as they were older postings. I think it best to post fresh and I am hoping that someone can pick up on it and help me here. I appreciate any info. Regards John Steitz BUCKLEY SCANNELL PRITCHARD HAYES SULLIVAN
