    3. Thanks, Mike. That's a good suggestion, and I will follow up on it-- though the spelling Cilionydd does seem quite clear. There is only one y in the word. I did find that the word Cilionydd is the Welsh word for the Spotted Flycather bird (whatever that is!) Perhaps the place name is no longer in use. 3. Ann   I can't comment on your refusal of membership to the group but I would advise Jane to apply for membership.  It is a well run site, very friendly and free.  Information is shared and unlike the old days, when Mike John was running the site there is a lack of animosity to members.   The nine who run the site, have recovered much of the information from Mike's site, much of it was prepared not by Mike but by members of the group anyway.   Most of the information is public domain, albeit hidden away in archives.  My ethos relating to such information is that it should be freely accessible to all, I feel the group shares the view.  Why not apply to join, I am sure you will get a warm welcome and will find the group most helpful Shirley  ________________________________ From: ann <annmacey@ntlworld.com> To: monmouthshire@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, 9 November 2012, 21:34 Subject: Re: [MON] Query re Mike John's site I believe that Mr John gave them the site while he was in prison Ann -----Original Message----- From: monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:monmouthshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jane Hope Sent: 09 November 2012 21:00 To: monmouthshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MON] Query re Mike John's site Thanks Ann, that's a bit naughty isn't it.  That site had a wealth of information.  I would have assumed that this nine (whoever they are) would have bought the info from Mike John, but, if it's free info can't see that they've done that.  Very odd. They have moved the data to the MonGenes Yahoo group and you have to apply for membership to that group. I applied and was refused because - and I quote from the email I received "We have denied your application because our approach is totally different to that of GFHS.  We aim to make as much data as possible available free of charge." The GFHS mentioned is Gwent Family History Society. This is not strictly true because you have to be a member of the group to use the information and while they do not charge a fee for joining, they do refuse to let family historians join if they are members of Gwent Family History Society – unless I have it totally wrong and it is just me they are refusing. That approach IS totally different to GFHS who let anybody join.
