    3. Hello Sandi, I have a Sarah POWELL in my family tree. She was born in Gloucester December 1804 and married Thomas HOPKINS. Five of their children migrated to New Zealand around 1860. My ancestors stayed in Gloucester except for my GGrandfather who went to Glamorgan in 1891. You may be looking at the same woman who is my 3rd great Grandmother. And perhaps it is another Sarah POWELL. Cheers, Gillian Melbourne On 5/15/2013 5:03 AM, Sandi Halling wrote: > I have contacted the Gwent Record Office as the records for Monmouth in early > 1800's are there. 1. [MON] Welsh naming convention.
    2. Dave Zimmerman
    3. I am familiar with the Welsh tradition of the sons using the first letter of their mothers birth name as a middle initial. Does this tradition also extend to daughters using a middle name convention ?? My Great-Great Grandmother was born Ann Llewellyn but was always identified in records as Ann W Morgan. She was married to a William Morgan. Where might the W come from ?? Her sons used the L for a middle initial, e.g., William L Morgan, John L Morgan, etc. Dave Zimmerman Howell, Michigan USA

I believe my gggrandmothers Sarah POWELL's father was Edward and he was a farmer. She was born 1814ish in Monmouth Wales. I have found the following entries which may or may not be right, but could be connected to her. 1) Marriage 1 August 1812 Edward Powell, Monmouth bachelor, to Frances Llewellen, Monmouth spinster. Banns St Marys Monmouth. This from Gwent FHS Marriages. 2) in the 1841 census for Llanover Lower at Coust Farm there is a William Powell 75 farmer not born in county, Edward Powell, farmer, not born in county, Thomas Powell 25, male servant not born in county and William Powell, 20 male servant, born in county. Sarah Powell was married to Henry Summers on 7th July 1839 in Church of England Charlton Kings Gloucester. She stated her father was Edward Powell Farmer. There was a Mary Powell as a witness at the wedding. In each census she says Monmouth as her birthplace, and in 1871 it is spelt as Laneyatha, However no place exists of that name so it must have been transcribed wrongly. I have found a Mary Powell born 1819 Llanarth, and a Mary born in Llanover in 1811. There are several Sarah Powells but I cannot distinguish which would be her. Can anyone help....maybe these names are familiar and part of your family research. Any help would be appreciated from me in New Zealand. 2. Andrew Hughes
    3. Ian,   They did indeed marry on 15th May 1831, after Banns. They both signed, as opposed to making their mark. They were both from the parish and the witnesses were Wm Thomas and Filicea Anthony. For a marriage in 1831 there will not be any further details, the form of the register in use did not ask questions like address and parent's names..   Andrew ________________________________ From: Ian Moody <imoody@gmx.com> To: "MONMOUTHSHIRE@rootsweb.com" <MONMOUTHSHIRE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, 11 May 2013, 1:06 Subject: [MON] Henry Moody & Elizabeth Gainey marriage 1825 Hi all I am back after some 8 years. 3. This thread has just reminded me of the (Anglican) parish weekend we spent many years ago at the (Methodist) holiday home in St Ives. Like Joss' experience there was a mix of religion and healthy outdoor pursuits but it did raise eyebrows when we expressed a desire to go to the pub! 3. Thank you John I should have known this, but didn't. When I was a teenager (many years ago!) I went to the Corporation Rd Presbyterian Church (known as "Corpa") in Newport. We used to have summer holidays at Trefecca - a lovely place. A mix of religion and healthy outdoor pursuits. Once we thought we heard the ghost of Howell Harris, or Howling Harry as we called him. Thanks for the memories. Joss Subject: Re: [MON] Identity of church in old photo Dear Listers, You may be interested to know that thanks to Huw Walters, I have been able to positively identify the Welsh church referred to in my message of 3rd May. The church is the Harris Memorial Chapel adjacent to Trefecca College near Talgarth, Breconshire. The chapel was demolished some time ago. I've since found an old postcard image showing the chapel - currently on my website: http://www.jlb2011.co.uk/harris-memorial-chapel.jpg
