Western Mail Saturday May 22nd 1926. James PASSEY, butcher, Trelewis, was fined £5 each on two counts at Bargoed on Friday for failing to give three hours' notice of the slaughter of animals as required by the Public Health Meat Regulations. Mr. John EVANS prosecuted for the Gelligaer Council, and Mr. Ivor M. CULE, Merthyr, defending, pleaded guilty to one of the charges. Mr. EVANS explained it was the first prosecution of its kind in that court. It was essential that a person before slaughtering an animal for sale for human consumption should give three hours' notice. There was a proviso, however, that where immediate slaughter was necessary because of injury or illness to an animal notice should be given as soon as was reasonable. In this case Sanitary-inspector ROWLANDS received the following text of a telegram from defendant: "Beast Trelewis slaughter-house. Kindly inspect.- PASSEY." Urias ROWLANDS, sanitary inspector, said it was obvious by the look of the carcase that it was diseased. Mr. CULE'S defence was the animal was ill, was immediately slaughtered, and that notice was sent to the sanitary inspector as soon as possible. A coloured man named Elmi MOHAMIT 30, was remanded on bail by the Cardiff Stipendiary on Friday on a charge of unlawfully and maliciously wounding another coloured man named Horatio STRAKER, by striking him on the head with a stick in Bute-place. Mr. Sydney JENKINS, prosecuted for the Seamen's and Firemen's Union, and Mr. J. Lewis WALTERS defended. Bowlers, golfers, and sportsmen generally throughout South Wales wil learn with deep regret of the death, from a heart attack, on Friday of Mr. D.A. SUTHERLAND, of Cornhill Villa, Swansea. He was 51 years of age, and leaves a widow, two sons, and a daughter. (There is quite a long obituary). "I find that it was purely an accident," said Mr. R.J. RHYS, coroner, at the close of an inquiry held at Tylorstown on Thursday into the death of Edgar LLEWELLYN, aged 32, of 28, Llanwonno-road, Stanleytown, a banksman, employed at No.9. Colliery, Tylorstown. On May 1. LLEWELLYN, who was a member of the Wattstown Male Voice Choir, was returning with other members from an eisteddfod at Pontypridd, where they had won a chair. Near the entrance to the Standard Colliery, Ynishir, he was knocked down by a car driven by Donald FRASER, the son of the headmaster of the Hendrefadog Schools, Tylorstown. FRASER was driving Mr. T.W. BERRY, Rhondda, director of education., Mrs. BERRY, and Miss BERRY to their residence at Penygraig. Alfred FACEY and Rees DAVIES said that they were walking up the road behind LLEWELLYN, when they saw him move first to the middle of road and then back again. Immediately after they saw the headlights of the car. Then the car struck him. They heard the horn sounded. Mrs. Aldyth Muriel BERRY, who was riding in front beside the driver, said that FRASER sounded his horn continuously. He was not going more than ten miles per hour. She saw LLEWELLYN a fraction of a second before he was struck; he seemed to hesitate in front of the lamps. He staggered a little, as though the lights had dazed him. Had he moved on he would have escaped. Donald FRASER said LLEWELLYN started out into the middle of the road but hesitated, and was on his way back to the side of the road when the car struck him. A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned. John Patrick.

He'll be sorely missed Hi Alan and Listers, Yes, Hugh will be missed and I can't quite believe that I'll never hear from him again. I've been looking over the lengthy off-list correspondence I had with him. Privately, Hugh could be funny and teasing. We didn't always see eye to eye over some matters, but he didn't bear a grudge. In person, Hugh was softly spoken and quite different from how he sometimes came across in e-mail messages. Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah http://www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com
Western Mail Saturday May 22nd 1926. As the result of a motor accident near Colchester, Mr. George H. Mr. HOARE, who is the chief reporter to the Newport "Argus," left Newport on Thursday morning for a holiday motor tour with three friends, via Harwich to Holland, in which country they proposed to spend a few days. He was accompanied by Mr. Arthur SIMS, F.R.C.O., hon. conductor of the Newport Choral Society; Mr. KEENE, a member of a Newport firm or tobacconists, and one other person whose identity is not yet known, but who, it is beleived was not a Newportonian. It is stated that the car crashed into a hedge and was overturned, and Mr. HOARE sustained serious injuries. The other occupants of the car escaped almost unhurt. Mr. HOARE, whose condition on Friday was reported to be grave, is a member of a well-known family of South Wales journalists, and formerly represented a Cardiff paper at Merthyr, his wife's home. Latest information was that Mr. HOARE'S condition was improving. An accident in which a police-sergeant on a motor-cycle was overturned and pinned beneath was described at New Tredegar on Friday, when David M. DAVIES 24, Merthyr, was summoned for driving a motor-lorry in a manner dangerous to the public and also with driving negligently. Mr. J.W. LEWIS, Merthyr, defended. Police-sergeant ROPER said that he was in plain clothes, driving a combination at ten miles an hour, and defendant was in front driving at eight miles an hour.Witness was in the act of passing him when defendant pulled into the right hand side to deliver goods. The back wheel of the lorry caught witness' side-car wheel, turning him over. DAVIES and his assistant released him from underneath. Defendant who expressed his regret, said that he put out his arm to indicate his intention. The summons was dismissed on payment of 14s. costs. Photograph page 10. He had been ill for some time. Mr. VACHELL was a member of the well-known South Wales family, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John VACHELL, Fairfield, Llandaff, and a brother of the late Dr. Charles VACHELL, Park-place, Cardiff, and the late Mr. Ivor VACHELL, head of the firm of VACHELL and Co., solicitors, Cardiff. His only surviving brother is the youngest, Dr. Herbert VACHELL, of Eastbourne. Mr. VACHELL who was about 70 years of age , removed from Newport to Weston five or six years ago, but he continued his association as a partner in the firm of Messrs. ADAMS and VACHELL, consulting mining engineers, Newport. He was a past vice-president of the South Wales Institute of Engineers. In his leisure hours he was a capable and enthusiastic golfer, and a few years ago was elected captain of the Royal Porthcawl Club. He was a leading Churchman. Benjamin MILLER 34, of Chamberlain-road, Eastbrook, Dinas Powis, died following an accident on the way home from Penarth. There is some mystery concerning the affair, and the Cardiff coroner (Dr. R.J. SMITH) on Friday adjourned the inquest in the hope that whoever was involved-probably a cyclist-would come forward and volunteer to give evidence. His brother Sydney, told the coroner that he beleived Benjamin was rambling in his talk in bed one night when he stated that on Tuesday, May 11th he had been knocked down by a motor-cyclist and side-car after visiting a picture-house at Penarth. Benjamin became ill and witness brought him to the City Lodge hospital, where he died next day. William PEARCE, Fern Villa, Cardiff-road, Eastbrook, said they were walking home from Penarth to Eastbrook when three cyclists came up behind them. MILLER was walking about two feet from the pavement and got knocked down by one of the cyclists. The latter dismounted, but on finding that the injuries were not serious rode away. A constable came on the scene later, but witness did not tell him anything about the accident. The Coroner: Most extraordinary! Police-constable W.T. WALLING told the coroner that on the 8th inst. he was told MILLER had had too much to drink. No complaint of any accident was made to him. The following day a sister came to the police-station and complained that her brother had been knocked down by a motor-cycle and sidecar. Witness had made all possible inquiries, but had failed to find out anything about the accident. Dr. Cyril THOMAS said that MILLER when admiited to the City Lodge on May 19th was semi-conscious and unable to talk. A post-mortem examination revealed an extensive fracture of the base of the skull which was the primary cause of death. John Patrick
