    3. Western Mail Tuesday June 8th 1926. After a long search in a disused pit close to Talyfraw Farm, near Swansea, the body of Jenkin H. HOPKINS, a collier was discovered on Monday. HOPKINS, who was 25 years of age, had been missing from his home at Gorse, Cockett, Swansea, since Saturday evening.. Search parties scoured the district, and found the man's hat near the pit, and concentrated their efforts at that point. The disused pit has an aperture of scarcely 2ft. at the top. It is about 50ft. deep, and has water at the bottom. A canary was was lowered to the bottom of the hole, and it having survived the test for foul air, Mr. Ben DAVIES , an old collier, volunteered to descend and was lowered in a "bowk." He remained there about a dozen yards below  for three-quarters of an hour, and then came up. Afterwards Thomas ELLIOTT and Ben DAVIES went down and contiued the search. They found a quantity of old timber and barbed wire in the water, but failed to find a body, but though it might possibly be underneath, and at four p.m., after some hours of work in the pit, the body of a man was discovered. An inquest will be held. HOPKINS, a married man, with two children, was to undergo an operation at Swansea Hospital from the effects of an accident at a local colliery some time ago. Stanley WISHART 20, and George Edward WATKINS 19, were charged at Cardiff with breaking and entering the refreshment pavilion in the Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday night and stealing eight pairs of shoes, an odd shoe, four tennis racquets, an umbrella, a blazer, and other articles of the value of £17.15s., the property of Alfred MILSOM.. Police-constable NORMAN saw the boys sitting on the grass in the Cardiff Arms Park early on Sunday morning. They ran away, and where they had been sitting he found a number of shoes, tennis racquets, a box of biscuits, a bottle of lemonade, two bunches oif keys, and other things. Later WISHART and WATKINS were arrested. WISHART said they had been walking about all night. WATKINS said he had been with WISHART. The prisoners were remanded in custody until tomorrow (Wednesday). Mr. W.E. GOODWIN, of 42, Burnaby-street, Cardiff won the second prize at the Raleigh motor-cycle rally at Monsal Dale, Derbyshire. Mr. GOODWIN, with Miss A. MORRIS of 53, Coburn-street, Cardiff had covered a distance of 220 miles. Thomas John EVANS, of Baneswell-street, Newport, and Daviud LOGAN, Evans-street, Newport, were committed to the assizes at Newport County Police-court on Monday charged with stealing a horse the property of the Ebbw Vale Iron and Steel Company. Prisoners pleared guilty. It was stated they took the horse from among 72 others grazing in a field. His Honour J. Lloyd MORGAN, K.C., awarded £60 damages to Ernest James MARTIN, of Treheullw, St. David's, auctioneer, against Messrs. COX and Sons, milk vendors of Cardiff, who have a centre at Haverfordwest, the result of a collision between defendant's lorry and plaintiff's car, on the road between St. David's and Haverfordwest. Mr. Trevor Harries, Swansea, instructed by Messrs. Eaton EVANS and WILLIAMS, Haverfordwest, appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. Hubert Ll. WILLIAMS, Swansea, instructed by Colonel WE. JONES, Haverfordwest, for the defendants. Two unemployed colliers of Abertillery lost their lives on Monday afternoon by the collapse of the sides of a hole in an old disused pit situate at the rear of the picturesque Six Bells Recreation Ground Abertillery, while digging for coal for domestic use. Another man who went to their aid had a miraculous escaspe from death. The victim were:- Frank ALLEN 42, of 5, Blenheim-road, Six Bells, married man, with  a wife and six young children, and William Henry SNELGROVE 22, of 5, Prretorias-road, Six Bells, married man, with three children. The men had dug a hole about 20ft in diameter and had reached a depth of about 15ft. Whether they had timbered is not yet clear. Without any warning the sides collapsed and buried both men. Charles BIRD, of Windsor-road, Six Bells, heard them scream, and without regard for his own surface he jumped into the rapidly filling cavity in hopes of saving them. Before, however he had gone far he was caught by a second fall and was covered with earth for a considerable time. Another man, Howard HARRIS, heard the crash and was able to get hold of BIRD and prevent him from being further covered in. More assistance was quickly forthcoming, and BIRD was extricated without any apparent injury. He joined a large number of men who, armed with picks and shovels, dug their way down the hole hoping to reach the victims alive. Unfortunately, their strenuous efforts proved in vain, for after 2 1/2 hours of hard work, they disclosed the two men both dead, in an upright position about three yards from one another. About 50 tons of earth had fallen on them and their death must have had occurred quickly.. John Patrick

    3. Hi Sawn Don't forget that she may have been born in Abergavenny but baptised somewhere else - her mother's home parish for instance, especially if she is the eldest or her mother went home to have her first child with her own mother to help in Abergavenny but had the baby baptised in her new parish. Usually the former scenario. Birthplace can be different to baptism place. If anybody runs across a marriage of John WATERS (or Walters) to Martha prior to 1814 and birth of daughter, SARAH about 1814/1815, could you please let me know. The only family info I have about my gggGrandmother, was provided by her husband on her Death Cert. in 1853, in Australia. He gave Abergavenny as her birthplace but that doesn't seem to be correct; I'm sure a Parish Register somewhere, holds the answer. Repeated above info, in case anybody is reading this for first time. With or without her family, SARAH was certainly in Cathedine Parish in Breconshire in 1832. Any ideas/suggestions gratefully received. Kind regards, Dawn Stanton. Mrs. FEAR, wife of Councillor FEAR, Blaina, who collapsed in the street on Friday, died at her home on Saturday morning. She leaves one daughter and three sons, one of whom is Mr. Arthur FEAR, of the Royal Academy of Music and a well-known Welsh Baritone. At the inquest at Swansea on Daniel Matthews 52, a collier, of Gorse-road, Cockett, the widowe told the coroner (Mr. J.C. MORRIS) that her husband had been in very bad health with chest trouble. A few days before his death there was some unpleasantness at the house, and there was some rough play. The Coroner: I don't propose to go into that, because when I hear the doctor's evidence I think it will be right to say it had nothing to do with his death. Dr. P. McKETCHIE said there were marks of violence on the temple and chest, but death was due purely to natural causes- pneumonia. A verdict was returned accordingly. Playing for the Newport Customs and Excise C.C. against St. Mary's at Caerleon, G.E.N. GRIFFITHS took all ten wickets, his analysis being:- O. 12.3.  M. 0.    R.25.    W.10. In a ten-round contest Freed GEORGE (Kenfig Hill) and Billy GREEN (Taff's Well) drew, while over six rounds Stan JEHU (Maesteg) defeated "Slogger" FAHEY (Garth) on points. John Patrick

    3. Thanks to Ann for Gwent FHS info; and to Michael Elliott Jones, responding to somebody else, has actually led me to a John WATERS marriage, not on IGI and the interchanging use of WALTERS/WATERS. (Tasmania,Australia.)

    3. Glad the info was of interest even if it didn't provide a fountain - tut sorry can't help the play on water, still or sparkling. I have some entries I copied from the registers at the Gwent County Record Office, I shall find time between now and eternity to put them into an email. Otherwise Ann's idea about the GFHS is an excellent one. Oh, and I must remember to renew my membership, thanks Ann. Cheers Luned in Tasmania PS where are you in Tassie Dawn? I'm in Burnie.

    3. Mike Nash is not a big place http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/nash-bap-166-220.jpg part of Mike John's extensive Monmouthshire Parish Registers site, has baptism on 10th June 1770 of Arnold son of Arnold WALTER There are other children of Arnold WALTER , for example Thomas on 17 May 1767 and Edward 26 Jan 1772 where the father's surname is WALTERS. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/marrpre1812/nashmarrG1725-1817.htm is worth searching as Arnold WATERS is witness to a number of marriages in Nash, as if he was a churchwarden or parish overseer in the 1780s/1790s. Parish officers might often witness marriages if they could read and write, including those of people unrelated to them. An Arnold WATERS was buried in Nash age 93 on 24 May 1813 It may well be worth looking at other parishes nearby along the Gwent levels, low-lying land along the coast of the Bristol Channel. There are WATERS entries in Goldcliff, for example. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MON/Nash/index.html has a 'nearby places' section which may help if you are unfamiliar with the local geography. 3. Western Mail Monday June 7th 1926. Bertram WESTON 3, son of Harry WESTON, a railwayman, living at Mardy-terrace, Merthyr, was saved from being run over by a passing motor-car on Saturday through the plucky act on the part of a miner named Howell TREHARNE. The little boy had rushed out of the house in pursuit of a ball and having recovered it on the other side of the street, was re-crossing the road when the motor-van drove up. TREHARNE, who resides at Gladstone-terrace, happened to be talking to a friend near by, when he saw the danger threatening the youngster, and he promptly rushed in front of the approaching car and pushed the child on to the pavement out of harm's way. TREHARNE, however, was unable to save himself, the van being upon him almost as he rescued the child practically from beneath the wheels. He was knocked down, but escaped without any bones being broken, though he suffered severe and extensive bruises. The child is none the worse for his experience. Mr. John THOMAS, Eos Brycheniog, and Mrs. THOMAS, Upland Cottage, Blaenavon, celebrated their golden wedding on Sunday. They were married at Govilon Church. Mr. THOMAS, who is still hale and hearty, is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry THOMAS, for many years of the Rock and Castle Hotel, Sennybridge, Breconshire-his father being for many years the Royal Mail coachman. Mrs. THOMAS is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. EDWARDS, of Quick-buildings, Blaenavon. In his younger days Mr. THOMAS won prizes as a tenor vocalist on all the principal eisteddfodau in the Principality. Mr. THOMAS has been a reader of the Western Mail for 40 years. Nellie MALONEY, the Irish "mystery girl," who has been under treatment at the Merthyr Workhouse Infirmary for a week for loss of memory, was handed on Saturday by the master of that institution (Mr. D.J. WILLIAMS) into the care of a cousin of hers, Mr. Thomas MALONEY, and was taken by him to his home at Elm-street, Aberbargoed. The girl a native of Abbey Mahon, Timoleague, Co. Cork, and she came to Wales intending to stay with Mr. Thomas MALONEY and his family until she could find a situation in domestic service. Arrived at Bargoed she seems to have become confused about her cousin's address, and, failing to trace him, she appears to have suffered a shock which affected her memory. Mr. MALONEY was unaware of the girl's presence in Wales until he was told of her plight by Western Mail investigators, and he expresses grateful appreciation on behalf of Miss MALONEY'S relatives of the practical interest taken in this case by that newspaper. It is also interesting to note that as a result of the publicity given by the Western Mail to Miss MALONEY'S predicament a former acquaintance of her parents in Ireland, Mr. Timothy MURPHY, who now lives at Pontlottyn, arrived at the Merthyr Workhouse Infirmary on Saturday. Mr. MURPHY explained to our Merthyr representative that on reading the Western Mail about Miss MALONEY and her adventures it occurred to him that possibly she was a daughter of his old friends and he deemed it his duty to the people he once knew to put such a possibility to an immediate test. Meanwhile the girl's family in Co. Cork have been commuicated with. Miss MALONEY is profuse in her thanks for kindnesses shown her by the infirmary authorities. Everything (she says) was done to make her happy. Mr. Percie Overton WARD, of Llwyncelyn House, Porth, formerly of Glasdir, Merthyr, general manager of the Lewis-Merthyr Consolidated Collieries (Limited), who died on November 22, aged 48 years, son of Dr. J. L.W. WARD, J.P., left estate of the gross value of £25,185, with net personalty £22,282. Probate of the will, dated February 11, 1907, has now been granted to Mr. James Tresher HARROP, of Gwaunfawren, Merthyr, and Mr. William Knight SMYTH, of 9, Clifton-crescent, Folkestone, solicitor, the Right Hon. Lord MERRIVALE in an action in the High Court having pronounced for the force and validity thereof. Testator left specific bequests to various relatives and friends, and the residue of the property to his father for life, and then for his brothers Edward and Ernest and his sisters Ada Elizabeth and Nora Ethel. 3. Thanks to 'Luned in Tasmania' - just returned from holiday and saw your very helpful advice. Question now is - how do I check the Goytre and Llanover Registers? I think what my question really needs to be now, is .... How can I check ALL Parish Registers for areas surrounding Abergavenny? Sarah WATERS is certainly not on Mike Johns Transcripts for Abergavenny at all; there is no matching Sarah WATERS on IGI; Parish Registers are the most reliable source, so is there anything for sale , re Monmouthshire, that I should consider? Perhaps a local Genealogy or Family History Society has that type of material for sale? Any information or suggestions appreciated. Kind regards, Dawn (Tasmania, Australia.)
