    3. Several things are possible - You could possibly contact Rick, the Newton Co. web page host, & see if you scanned & sent it to him if he would post it there. You could transcribe everything that pertains to this area & post to the list. Then it would stay in the rootsweb archives & be searchable. Additionally, either way, I'd love to have a copy to use in a future edition of ROOTS, the Newton Co. genealogy publication. Is this by chance one of the newspapers I've seen advertised on e-bay? I wondered about them & have been very tempted to bid on one. Above all, thanks for sharing your discovery with the list & I'm sure several will help you pursue this question. ----- Original Message ----- From: <AMEON79@aol.com> To: <MONEWTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 10, 2000 10:13 PM Subject: Re: [MONEWTON] Fortress Monroe > Joy I read this over and over and it talks about alot of Missouri history. The > Newspaper itself is The New York times June 18;1861.Its several pages and > will take awhile to rewrite and send.Where would or how would I share > it?Thank you Norma Jean > > > ==== MONEWTON Mailing List ==== > Newton County, Missouri MOGenWeb > http://www.rootsweb.com/~monewton/newton.html > > ============================== > Create a FREE family website at MyFamily.com! > http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST2

    3. There is also a current Fort Monroe as well as Seneca in Virginia, but I'm not sure when that Fort was established nor where they are in relation to each other. I did find that the fort is on the coast & Seneca south of Lynchburg. Also, although Seneca MO was platted in 1868, I've seen early reference to it in court records, like in the 1840's wherein the members of the county court are giving the official go-ahead to establish a formal road between Neosho & Seneca. (if I remember correctly) I'm not good on the detailed history of the area, but do remember a tidbit occasionally. It all makes the picture more interesting, doesn't it? ----- Original Message ----- From: Connie Schofield <kavolscof@junct.com> To: <MONEWTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 11, 2000 1:09 AM Subject: Re: [MONEWTON] Fortress Monroe > There is a Seneca, NY Maybe that's where the fort was. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <AMEON79@aol.com> > To: <MONEWTON-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, November 10, 2000 8:13 PM > Subject: Re: [MONEWTON] Fortress Monroe > > > > Joy I read this over and over and it talks about alot of Missouri > history. The > > Newspaper itself is The New York times June 18;1861.Its several pages and > > will take awhile to rewrite and send.Where would or how would I share > > it?Thank you Norma Jean > > > > > > ==== MONEWTON Mailing List ==== > > Newton County, Missouri MOGenWeb > > http://www.rootsweb.com/~monewton/newton.html > > > > ============================== > > Create a FREE family website at MyFamily.com! > > http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST2 > > > > > ==== MONEWTON Mailing List ==== > Newton County, Missouri MOGenWeb > http://www.rootsweb.com/~monewton/newton.html > > ============================== > Create a FREE family website at MyFamily.com! > http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST2

    1. [MONEWTON] Part 2 Important from Missouri
    2. This of itself is a repudiation of all authority of the Federal Goverment, whose Constitution is the supreme law,on the part of the State Goverment, its officers, and such citizens as might choose to adopt the provisions of the bill, and coupled as it was,on the part of the Legislature and the Govenor, with declarations hostile to its authority, and in sympathy with those who were arrayed in a con_idon of actual hostility against it,could leave no doubt of its object to carry out the provisions of this extraordinary bill, having in direct view hostilities to the Federal Government. It was so denounced by Gen.Harney, who characterized it as a secession ordinance,in his proc_au_ation on the 14th of Mar.last............only 2 more paragpaphs..is anyone really interested?

    1. [MONEWTON] A Counter Proclamtion Fron Gen.Lyons(1861 Newspaper)
    2. The following proclaimation has just been issued in an extra Democrat:To the citizens of Missouri: Prior to the proclamation issued by Gov.Jackson,of date 12th of June,it was well known to you that the Govenor and Legislature sympathized with the rebellion movements now in progress in the country, and had adopted every means in their power to effect a seperation of this State from the General Government. For this purpose parties of avowed Secessionists have been organized into military companies, throughout the State with the full knowledge and approval of the Govenor. The establishment of encampments in the State at an unusual period of the year, and authorized for an indefinite period, could have had no other object than the concentration of a large military lforce,to be subject to the provisions of the military law then in contemplation, and subsquently passed-a bill so offensive to all peaceable inhabitants, and so palpably unconstitutional, that it could be accepted by those only who were willing to conform to its extraordinary provisions, for the purpose of effecting their cherished object, the disruption of the Federal Government. That bill provides for an obligation to the State on the part of all persons enrolled under its provisions, irresdective of any obilgations to the United States, when the Constitution requires all States officers to take an oath of ailegiance to the United States...........Part 2 tomarrow

    3. Seneca MO was platted in 1868 so it did not exist in 1861. It was incorporated in 1883. The first newspaper was established Aug. 1, 1882. I see nothing in any of the 4 history books on Seneca mentioning any fort in the area. 3. Hello, I am new to your list and would like to post the family I am researching.. Wm. F. Layton married Malvina Briley on 13 Sept. 1842 in Lawrence Co. TN. Their children: Emmily b. 1843 Wm. J. b. 1845 John P. b. 1846 Sarah M. b. 1848 Melissa A. b. 1850 Salene b. 1853 Robert b. 1858 Martha b. 1860 Margaret b. 15 July 1861 Parlee b. 1864 Wm. F. Layton married 2nd. Martha Caroline Larkins, b. 1845 in Crittendon, TN. Married about 1875-6. Their children: Sarah F. b. 1877 Ida. I. 1878 Emma May 29,1880. She was my gr. grandmother. In census records Malvina lists herself as widowed. She must have been hurt tremendously when her husband came home from the Civil War and ended up taking another wife and starting another family. If anyone has information on either of these two families I would be happy to share the information I do have. Thanks for reading my rather lengthy letter. Dottie in So. Cal.

    1. [MONEWTON] Ongoing SHIPMAN/FERGUSON/WHITE Mystery
    2. Quick review..my great aunt Mary Ann (SHIPMAN) FERGUSON was the wife of Tom C. FERGUSON who was the son of Edmond FERGUSON and Hester (BREWER) FERGUSON. Tom's sister Rachel (FERGUSON) WHITE lived across the road from Tom and Mary (SHIPMAN) FERGUSON in Granby. The 1870 Newton County, MO Census shows that in the home of Edmond Ferguson with his wife and several children, lived also Bill WHITE and Rachel and their child, also a Hettie. However another FERGUSON researcher says that according to her info, Edmond lived with Rachel and Bill until he died in 1900. (From about 1870 on to 1900). So! My question is this oh you gurus... Do any of you know if the land was actually "always" Edmund's and at first Bill and Rachel lived with them? Or did the land switch hands and eventually become Bill and Rachel's and they were listed as the owner and it just looked live Edmund was living with them even though it had originally been his land? I thought maybe some of you might have the original land grants or something and know. If Edmund actually "went" to "another" land parcel (Rachel Ferguson White and Bill White's) as inferred by the 1870 Census, to live until his death in 1900, he would have only been about 45.So, does anyone know if he was in frail health or something? Does anyone know his causse of death? Oh how I wish these people could talk...I'd be a whole lot smarter! Also, was Hester around then too when Edmund was living with Rachel and Bill? Or did she remarry. I sorta lost her somewhere. How's that for something to start a week? I am trying to wade through lots of land grants and plot farms so I know where my family lived in conjunction to other family members. Any help on this line will be appreciated. Thanks! Deb Vancouver

    3. Hi Deb, Edmund and Hettie were in McDonald County in 1860 then Newton Co in 1870. In 1870 they are in Marion Twp, household 214 - family 215. William and Rachel Ferguson White are next in household 215 - family 216. William White is listed at the end of Edmund Ferguson's family but we believe the census taker accidentally put the household/family number on the wrong line. This indicates they were in separate residences in 1870. I will have to see what I have on the 1880 census. Edmund Ferguson was 74 years old when he died in 1900. Hettie died in 1903 at age 75. Both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lsimmons/Greenwood/greenwoo.htm Bye for now, Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: <DebShipmanRowe@cs.com> To: <MONEWTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 06, 2000 7:19 AM Subject: [MONEWTON] Ongoing SHIPMAN/FERGUSON/WHITE Mystery > Quick review..my great aunt Mary Ann (SHIPMAN) FERGUSON was the wife of Tom > C. 3. http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html Beware - the search feature can be case sensitive So, if you are searching for McNatt, Missouri in McDonald County, if typing in mcnatt, It may turn up nothing. However, typing in McNatt turns up three correct features. Try Frog Pond, Newton County! Ha! Frog Pond School ceased eons past, but still shows up. You might have to hunt around with the zoom feature as it won't give you a little arrow showing exactly where your feature is, but if you zoom it nicely shows up.
