Roll Call Blankenship,Woodcock,Hamilton,Ball and Sitler
Since all is quiet, thought I would send a Roll call email to update the list. Thanks to Joy Hobbs and others, my research on my GGGrandfather John D Lane has take great leaps forward. I am much appreciative. If any of you are researching LANE or KIRBY, contact me and I will gladly share what I have. Looking for any information on the following LANE families: Elijah and Elizabeth LANE on the 1870 census with John and several children. Would love to find their final resting place and it appears that Elijah died around 1877 and Elizabeth sometime between 1870 and 1880. John D LANE and wife Sophronia Elizabeth and their children. They were married in 1870 in Uniontown, Bourbon County, Kansas. My GGrandmother's memoirs state that her parents had 4 children before she was born and all died young. Ora Sophronia was born in 1880 in Joplin, Missouri, and Ota Minerva was born in 1882, probably in same area. John died 16 Aug 1889 in all probability in Newton or Jasper County. Possibly of Tuberculosis. Sophronia died of Tuberculosis in 1893 in Uniontown, Bourbon County, Kansas. Now here is the interesting part. He supposedly worked for a Carter's Mill as foreman. When he died, his men built him a fine wooden coffin and he was buried near a new school house being built. Joy sent me an 1882 plat map and John D Lane has 40 acres just East of Thurman and the 40 acres to the East of his were owned by a J Carter..Can anyone elaborate on any of this? Also, does anyone have any record of alligator sightings in Newton County in the late 1880's. If you are curious about this question, email me. sigh. so much to learn. Sophronia's parents, K.C. and Keziah KIRBY, were in Newton County for a short time between 1850 and 1860, as they moved on and settled in Bourbon County, Kansas, by 1860. The 160 acres they settled on is where Uniontown, Bourbon County, Kansas was built. I am slowly building my documentation on all this and will share anything that someone needs. For my information, could someone tell me what one might pay for a genealogy book such as: Washington Co. 1606-1888 Virginia & Virginians? It's supposed to have some Newton County, MO. people in it, and some of my surnames were listed. I bid a couple of times on the book, but have been outbid both times. There's only a couple of hours left on the bid, and I think I've shut down my bidding. But, if someone knows the going price of such a book, I'd appreciate hearing from you. It is a 23 page, soft-cover book, in mint condition, 8.5"x11". Thanks for any information. Oh, The surnames that caught my eye were TANNER, VANCE, and WHITE. Brenda

Does anyone know if the roster of this Union unit is available in a book or online somewhere? A distant cousin of mine from Newton County (Thomas B. Williams) was also in Company K, 6th Kansas Cav. I want to search for other familiar names in it. (Searching the Union pension records of some distant cousins in some Arkansas Union regiments provided me with a lot of, otherwise unavailable, priceless documentation on my line.) I believe there are a couple of online sites that have Civil War rosters, but I don't have them book marked on the computer I am using at the moment. I did find this list of battles for the 6th Kansas Cavalry when I looked up William White on ancestry.com's Civil War Database. This database has him listed with Co H, but I believe Co K and H combined sometime during the war. Hi Deb, William White (m. Rachel Ferguson) was a bugler with Co K, Regiment 6 of the Kansas Calvary. He served 31 Dec 1861 - 18 Mar 1865, 3 yrs, 2 mos, 17days. William would have been 16 when he enlisted. Regiment 6 was in Granby (September 24, 1862) and Newtonia (September 29/30 and October 4th, 1862). Family lore says William met Rachel during this time and after the war returned to marry her. I believe you can find actual documentation of the 6th Kansas Calvary's presence in Newtonia and also William White's Union service. Glad you enjoyed your trip!
