    3. Ms. Meyer was our guest speaker at our last Newton Co. gene meeting. We highly rated the Newton Co. web site & links - & suggested she consider this avenue if feasible for her column. She was VERY interested in the potential expansion of knowledge & info resources. Looks like she followed up & this should be a real boon to all area researchers. She was a great speaker & we all shared lots of interesting info. Good for everyone! ----- Original Message ----- From: Claire Jensen Wichelmann <goodwich@ix.netcom.com> To: <MONEWTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 29, 2000 5:37 PM Subject: [MONEWTON] Fw: queries for genealogy column > I received this and thought there might be others interested. > Claire > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > Hi, > My name is Frankie Meyer. 2. Claire Jensen Wichelmann
    3. I received this and thought there might be others interested. Claire ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi, My name is Frankie Meyer. (I am a retired high school biology teacher, and I have been doing family history research for 17 years.) In March of 1998, I began writing a genealogy column in the Joplin Globe, which is a regional newspaper that is subscribed to by many people in southwest Missouri. In the weekly column, I discuss some aspect of genealogy research, and at the end of the column, I try to include genealogy queries that relate to Jasper, Lawrence, Barton, Newton, Barry, Dade, and McDonald Counties in Missouri, as well as the northwest corner of Arkansas, northeast corner of Oklahoma, and the southeast corner of Kansas. There is no charge for the queries. In the past, I have included information on a Bible that was lost in a street, pictures that were bought in an estate sale that the new owner wanted to return to a related family, and numerous queries searching for information on ancestors and relatives in this area. One fellow was searching for information on an old building that he had recently bought that had been a business around 1900. So, I receive a wide range of queries. Since the Globe subscription area covers all those counties, the genealogy column is another good avenue to use in obtaining information on ancestors in those counties. I would like to know if you would consider adding a link to my e-mail address on your website. The e-mail address would the one that I have at the Joplin Globe that is published at the end of each of my columns. This is what the Joplin Globe uses for people to send queries: Frankie Meyer, Joplin Globe, P.O. Box 7, Joplin, Mo. 64802, or contact Mrs. Meyer at: gturner@joplinglobe.com. Gloria Turner is the managing editor for the paper, so letters go to her first, and she forwards them to me. I am looking forward to your reply. My column has been helpful to many people over the last 2 1/2 years. Sincerely, Frankie (Carlin) Meyer

    2. Planning to be in Neosho in September -- will be working on the above names. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has a connection in the Newton, Greene, Jasper counties area in time period 1830-1850. Anyone know where these families might have lived? I am a descendant of Joshua Brock and Fanny Estes, through their son Joshua Warren and his wife Susanna Damron. The Vaughn and Ratliff families married sisters of Joshua Warren. All had moved to Texas by 1850. Charlotte

    3. Charlotte, The south end of Joplin is divided by the Newton/Jasper county line. Most of Joplin is in Jasper county(probably 80 or 85%). If you contact the Genealogy Friends of the Library, based out of the library in Neosho, at 417-451-4231, they may be able to do a lookup for you related to Newton county residents. You should also contact either the Joplin City library (not sure of the number) or the Carthage library (which is the Jasper county seat) at 417-237-7040. I don't think the Carthage genealogy room is manned however, they might be able to point you to a researcher in that area. Randy

    1. Re: [MONEWTON] The Granby News Herald
    2. According to "Missouri Newspapers on Microfilm at the State Historical Society of MO" the Granby News-Herald was a weekly newspaper but the only issues still in existence and on microfilm are: 17 Dec 1925; and from 4 Feb to 30 Dec 1943 You can get those microfilm on an interlibrary loan from MO State Historical Society at your local public library, but it costs, I don't remember if this is for 2 films as I usually order 2 films at a time or per each film, $6.50. For newspapers covering earlier years, the Miner and Mechanic is a good one to read as it has community news and gossipy items in it. I have found an 1890 obit and infant deaths from 1891 & 1892 in this paper. Deb Hallecook

    1. [MONEWTON] Planning Trip to Newton County -- Suggestions Needed
    2. Hello Newton Listers! I will have the pleasure of researching in Newton County September 21 and 22 this year. Can anyone tell me if anything special is going on in Neosho or round about? I visited the library and historical house a couple of years ago -- and the court house but didn't have a lot of time at the courthouse. I seek information on BROCK, VAUGHN, DAMRON/DAMERON, RATLIFF, ESTES. Time period circa 1830 through 1850. Hoping to hear from anyone who has suggestions and information. Thanks so much! Please reply to my private e-mail: Cottongame@AOL.com Charlotte

    1. [MONEWTON] The Granby News Herald
    2. Does anyone out there know anything about the history of The Granby News Heral d??? I am trying to determine the exact years of its operation and what exactly happened to it! Did it just die out, or was it purchased by another and simply renewed under a different name? Oh please tell me someone out there has the answer to this one! I'll make sure they name a Totem Pole after you or something out here in the Pacific Northwest! Thanks so much! Deb Vancouver
