Okay dear Newton County genies...it's been awhile...but I am back and need a quick lesson in locating land! Where online can I locate something which I can printout which shows the latitude and longitudes that would pertain to all these records and land grants I have for my SHIPMAN ancestors in Newton County? I'm trying to figure out "where"these places are in the Granby, Berwick and Ritchey area beyond just having these numbers in front of me. I hope this makes sense. We didn't get to go on vacation in October and are scheduled now for Christmas holidays in MO. I can't wait to see Granby!!!! I can't wait to see all of these places I NEED to see! By the way, is there anything holiday-ish that I shouldn't pass up down in that area? (I hope the list will pardon me asking...but we are talking about my roots here you know!) Thanks for any help! You might try the Chamber of Commerce for Neosho http://www.neoshocc.com/ Ask them to send you a county map. They are very updated & have all the info on them you need - assuming you can plot a legal description. Visiting? Hmmm, don't overlook Branson entertainment including Silver Dollar City - they have tons of stuff going on during the Christmas season. If you can't plot a legal description - the best way I can describe it - Find the Range & Township - the numbers run across the top & sides of the maps. When you locate those appropriate coordinates, then find the Section you need within that area. (They run 1-36 in each one unless on an adjustment line) Then take your fractions of each section. Make a box on a piece of paper. Start dividing the box into 1/4ths. NW/SW/NE/SE. That will equate to 160 acres in each 1/4. Divide further your specific 1/4 section the same way. However, if it's city property, you might check with the assessors office upon arrival. Good luck! ----- Original Message ----- From: <DebShipmanRowe@cs.com> To: <MONEWTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 05, 2000 2:17 PM Subject: [MONEWTON] Help! > Okay dear Newton County genies...it's been awhile...but I am back and need a > quick lesson in locating land! > > Where online can I locate something which I can printout which shows the > latitude and longitudes that would pertain to all these records and land > grants I have for my SHIPMAN ancestors in Newton County? Was a newspaper published in Wentworth between 1850 and 1900? If so, I'd appreciate knowing the name and if it is available on microfilm. Thanks. Rosanne Troxel Searching: LYNN, ARMSTRONG, WEAVER, HAWKINS, BRITE
Would someone look up unknown Russell in the 1900 Newton County census. His wife's name is Irene or Mariam and she would be about 22 years old. Thank you in advance. Any help would be appreciated.

Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 06:12:35 -0700 From: "Gerald Johnston" <gerald.h.johnston@worldnet.att.net> To: "Newton Co." <MONEWTON-L@rootsweb.com>,"Jasper Co." <MOJASPER-L@rootsweb.com> I am wondering if anyone there can help me identify some names I have found in the MO Marriage indexes from an FTM CD? I have a Mariah Hutson that married a Wyatt Adkins on 1871, Newton Co.. I know who Wyatt was, but need to know who Mariah's parents were, as she is most likely related to my Hutsons too. I have another Hutson woman, Pursilla (sp?) who married Dan Shelton, in 1877; Newton. I wonder if she and Mariah may have been sisters? Still no idea of parents. Caline Adkins married John Stacy in 1874, Newton. I need to know both sets of parents here and also if John may have been a brother of Earl Stacy, who married Belle Hutson. The following are almost certainly relations, but I am not sure of parents & or other connections. MM Adkins & James Langley, 1878, Newton Co. Margaret M Adkins & Barrett M. Fowler, 1869 Newton. Mary Ann Adkins & Francis M Marshall, 1866, Jasper Co. Matilda Adkins & Emery B. Martin, 1873, Newton. Nathaniel Adkins & Nancy Bedford, 1870, Newton. If anyone can help identify these folks, it may help solve several puzzles for several of us. Thanks very much in advance! Joy, I still have not received my September issue. Was I one of the recent ones you just mailed? Jo
Hi Joy, I got my September Roots yesterday.... Thanking you, Shirley Dubuque
Seeking info on Asa Wiley SCOTT (b1790 Liddesdale Scotland - d unknown) and Mary "Polly" Poppy PEPPER (b 17 Jul 1809 NC - d 1885 Howell Co MO). Asa and Mary are listed on the 1860 Newton Co MO Federal Census in Granby Township along with John Jones, Mike Hettenbron and Julius Scott. (Julius also shows up the same year on the Dallas Co MO Federal Census.) All the men are listed as "miners." When they arrived in Newton County and when they left are a mystery at this time. The 1870 Dallas Co MO Federal Census has Mary listed with her third husband (John West), his family, her son Julius and Julius' family. Did Asa die in Newton County? Did he die in Dallas County? No family information has survived as to when and where he died. Would like to contact others researching this family. Also any tidbits of info, any suggestions, etc. would be most appreciated. Hello again All - For all of you ROOTS subscribers, I hope your Sept. copy finally made it to your mailbox. There were two that we've sent out again, now just watch the original arrive on the same day. However, the point of this message - we're currently working on the December issue. If you have a tree you would like to see in print, please send it along to us. My one suggestion, tho. If you are including any photos, it would be really nice if you'd downsize them before you send them in an email. Two reasons, transmission time on the net for large photo files, and scaling them down to use in Roots can produce less than desired results. Sometimes we have room for the large photos, more than likely we will rescale them to about a 1.5 x 2.5 photo or there abouts. (Space factors, you know) We're getting a pretty full edition already, with info so graciously provided by members, plus what we might hunt up, so we make no absolute promises - but then we anticipate all of you will subscribe again next year! Till later, Joy
I wonder if anyone out there has a 1880-1920 census for Newton Co.I'm trying to locate the Woodcock children. After the Parents died some raised these children.Thank you.NJ
Just movin stuff around and I don't want to lose anyones email address so I am sending it to myself and keeping a copy. Lorna
Good Morning! This is my first posting to the site and I am hoping that someone in Missouri will have a connection with my family. I have been researching this line for about 4 years and have hit brick walls. Last night I had it, and subscribed to every single Missouri county, so maybe I will have a breakthrough, or at least help someone else. This may be quite lengthy and if anyone needs clearification if I dont make sense somewhere, please let me know: Calvin Blankenship was born in Tennessee est. 1820-25. I know absolutely nothing about his parents, but in 1850 he was living next door to Wiliam and Pamela Jane Blankenship and their daughter Nancy, who was born in 1850. William was born a year or two after Calvin and he was also born in TN. I have to assume that they are related if not brothers. Calvin first appeared on the Texas County, District # 98 1850 Census with his Wife Delilah who was born in IL, her parents were born in TN, and three children: William P Angeline and James. His son, William was born abt. 1844 in MO so that indicates that they were in Missouri at least by 1844. By 1860, it is now called Boon Township and they have five more children : Nancy, Franklin, John, David, and Martha E. Calvin enlisted into the Confederate Army in 1861 and died in 1864. No military record exsists other than his Muster Roll. Then in 1870 and 1880 Delilah is the head of the household and in 1870 Henry (my gg grandfather) has appeared on the census for the first time. Deliah died between 1880-1883. She and Calvin are buried at Mitchell Cemetery. CALVIN AND DELIAH's CHildren and decendents I have only been about to locate two of Calvin's children on the census other than my gg grandfather: David b. abt 1857 married Margaret Sullins (daughter of Reuben Sullins) on May 6, 1886 in Licking Missouri. They had sic children: Dolts, Mary,Elmer,Alta (married Thomas Richards),Maggie, and lola. Angeline married Logan D. Harper. They had four girls: 1. Nancy Eliza : b. 1866 m. John W. Mitchell on July 23,1883 (Franklin Blankenship consented) in Licking, Missouri. They had 8 kids:William H, Carl L, Winnie M, Alma L, David, Justine, Eddie and Henry. 2. Mary, died young 3. Lucy b. 1870 married a Williams 4. Laura Ellen b. Sept 16, 1873 m. Edward Buckner (son of Thomas and Viney Buckner) had 6 kids: William Franklin b. Feb 10, 1893 m. Bertha Murr Logan James b. April 27, 1895 d. Mar 22, 1988 m. Thimsen Scranko and Mary Cochran Ethel b. July 1897 m. Hebrew Sukkins on Jan 30, 1915 Bryan b. Dec 22, 1899 m. Blanche Hobson Charles Allen b. Dec 22, 1903 m. Nell Hobson, d. April 2,1973 Ava Ruth b. Oct 18, 1905 Henry married Lillie Ellen Smith, daughter of James E. Madison Smith and Margaret Ellen Stricklin. They had 2 sons, Irven who married Rhoda Ormsby and Virgil who married Grace Viola Adkins, daughter of Charles Adkins and Hester Gatewood. I hope I made sense, and more importantly, a connection!
That was wonderful Thank you ever so much.NJ
In 1900, prior to electricity being available, it was customary for small towns such as Gramby to furnish lighted streets for its citizens. A lamp lighter lit the lamps about dusk and kept them burning for a specified period...midnight or dawn (?) Natural gas was used where available. If not, I suspose kerosine was the fuel. Per "Tidbits from Neosho and Newton County Missouri" Articles from 1899 and 1900 speak of the cold weather. Feb 16, 1899 "The coldest weather ever recorded in this section was experienced here this week when the thermometer dropped to 30 degrees below zero. Ice 12 inches thick is being cut out and stored in the Neosho ice houses." Feb 22, 1900 "Friday night was the coldest of the winter, the thermometer at the Government Fish Hatchery registering 4 degrees below zero." Jan 16, 1900 "Kerosene oil dropped in price in Neosho from 14 cents to 11 1/2 cents last week. This drop was caused by a visit from a Joplin Wagon representing a rival of the Waters Pierce Oil Co. which has a monopoly of Neosho." May 2, 1907: An article about a large electric plant to be built in Neosho Ice Company's plant. July 7, 1907: The Gas Ordinance Passed, to franchise gas supplier.
