ELLIS was used as a middle name for several generations. Sarah Ellis STONE (b. Dec 17, 1858 in Mercer Co., MO) was the daughter of John Ellis STONE (b. 1820, probably in Caldwell Co., KY) and Sarah A. Fowler (b. 1820 in Crittenden Co., KY). John Ellis STONE was the son of Henry Willis STONE (b. 1795 in SC) and Cassandra PENNINGTON (b. ~1788 in 96 District, Spartanburg Co., SC) There was another earlier John Ellis STONE, b. c 1782 in Laurens Co., SC, the husband of Cassandra's sister, Naomi PENNINGTON.
