There would have been a cabin situated amongst tall grasses where panthers roamed. The time frame of this legend would have been 1912-18. Scott County, 1911, is the last documented area where my grandfather, Edwin Finley WELLS, and his family lived but to date I've not found any reference to panthers and tall grasses in that area. The family previously would have lived in New Madrid County where their last two children were born. My mother, Daisy (WELLS) RIGGS, born there in 1910, related her terror when panthers got on the roof and tried to get down the chimney when she was "real little". Her older sister, Ada, spotted the tail of a panther in the tall grasses and her father shot it. Can anyone tell me of an area in southeastern Missouri where this may have occurred? I was born in Scott County, IL in 1940. I remember as a small child that for about 3 or 4 nights we heard the cry/scream of a big cat......and we lived in the town of Winchester. I have cousins by the name of Wells and they lived around Roodhouse, Greene Co., IL. Their father was Irvin Elam Wells. There also were Riggs in Winchester, Scott Co., IL. Mary, thank you for responding. I am amazed to hear of big cats as late as 1940, especially near a populated area! I have checked to see if any of my WELLS and RIGGS lines might have been in Greene and Scott counties in IL, but have not yet found a connection.
