    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: AWStanaland Surnames: McLain, McClain, MacLain, McLean, Agee, Smith, Pugh, Early Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.newmadrid/2131.1.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ruth...were you perhaps replying to me....Audrey? The way these reply 'threads'are set up, it gets confusing. I do have a sort of McLAIN / McCLAIN line connection to the PUGHs that came to eastern Arkansas before some went on to Texas. And noting your SMITH surname, there is also a SMITH connection to my McLAINs. My great grandmother Clara COOPER b 1878 Monroe Co, Brinkley AR mar 1898 as the 2nd wife of William David McLAIN b 1859 up in Lawrence County, WAlnut Ridge, AR. They made their home in Newport, Jackson County, AR. All over eastern AR there are branches of his McLAIN line ..as well as a branch (off the Weakley County Tennessee root ancestor Charles McCLAIN) that went to Logan Co AR and then to Oklahoma. My great grandfather Wm David McLAIN's father was John Henry McLAIN b 1835-37 TN (mar in AR to AGEE)and John was born to Charles McLAIN and Perlina A. (Palina, Polina) who came from TN to Lawrence Co AR before the 1850 census. (See Strawberry township, Lawrence Co, AR in 1850). Christiana was the oldest known sister of John Henry and she married a James SMITH ...and had daughters and sons. (I have more info on that branch) Now ...as to the PUGH line, there is a connection to my great grandmother Clara COOPER McLAIN. Clara was born 1878 to the last / 3rd spouse (Dillard L. COOPER) of my gg grandmother Parthenia (Theny, Partheny) ANDREWS or ANDERS. Parthenia's 2nd spouse was Ed HOLLEMAN / HOLMAN who died 1873 and she married Dillard L. COOPER in 1878 Monroe Co AR. But the PUGH line connects to the 1st marriage of Parthenia, who came from Lincoln / Wilkes Co GA in 1856 to AR with her parents and siblings. In 1851 Wilkes GA, Parthenia married George M. HOUSE. They had 2 known daughters (maybe 1 more child, but I have no info. Their daughter Julia Ann Caledonia "Callie" HOUSE mar 1st to BROMBLEY / BRUMLY, then to John ALMAN (Allmon, Allman, etc). Their 2nd daughter born in Arkansas in 1856 was Martha Caroline HOUSE. She is the one who married William D. PUGH from NC supposedly and they married in Monroe County or St Francis County AR. It was their sons that left AR and went either to Ft SMITH, or Oklahoma or on to Navarro, Kerns, TX. On their son Leeander / Lee Andrew's line there was an EARLY - PUGH marriage in Texas. And I've found a good bit of info on that line. Martha Caroline HOUSE PUGH was a 1/2 sister to my great grandmother Clara COOPER McLAIN ...and my mother (still alive b 1920) remembers at least hearing about Aunt Callie (Julia) and Aunt Mattie (Martha). There is so much I / we do not know about our McLAIN line ancestors prior to 1800, and even after that. We know some of the marriage / allied lines, but certainly not all of them. I do not even have parents for my gggg grandfather Charles McLAIN b about 1784 in ? NC or SC. Nor do I have a surname for his wife Elizabeth, nor do we know all of their children, just some of them. I do not even have all the children's names of their son Charles and wife Perlina A. Unknown ...my branch that left Weakley Co TN to go to AR. More children than the 4 who came to AR with them were in their 1840 household in TN So, yes, considering the number of unknowns I still have on my McLAIN line, you and I might want to look more closely at your Lewis MacLANE and his son Willis and wife Emra (maybe Emma?) ROTH McCLAIN. Tell me what you know about where the family lived over time ....were they in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas or the Carolinas ...or possibly up in Illinois in Gallatin County IL? One sure way to find out is IF you have a McLAIN male on the line of Lewis or Willis, that could DNA test. My male cousin in Little Rock AR tested for my line ..on the full 67 markers ...with FTDNA, so we have the marker results and lots of matches we are trying to learn from.
