Born July 17, 1913, in Matthews, daughter of the late Welton and Maude Brooks Shanks, she attended Crowe Methodist Church in New Madrid. On Sept. 25, 1938, in Jefferson City, she married George F. Proffer Sr., who preceded her in death in September 1966. Survivors include: two sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael and Wanda Proffer and George Proffer Jr. of Matthews; one daughter, Shabie Bird of Advance; one brother, Joe Shanks of New Madrid; one sister, Bette LeSieur of Pearlington, Miss.; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One son, one brother and six sisters also preceded her in death. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, where services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.
