This is probably just a coincidence of names, but my husbands family moved from Big Sandy TN to the New Madrid area. Luraney Snider married Lewis G Matheny on 1 Feb 1863. On the Benton Co Tn census for 1880, she is listed as head of house. Apparently Lewis G. died between 1870-1874. Youngest child, listed as her daughter is 6 years of age, and named Luraney Lewis. I know that Dunklin, Stoddard and Pemiscot Counties all used to be New Madrid until they were made into counties themselves and wondered if he might be connected to your Lewis's.
