I came across a website for Saint Louis-San Francisco Railway. They have an employee database that you can search in. I am a Shy descendant of New Madrid. By the way, for anyone with an interest in New Madrid genealogy, the 1994 book, "Pioneers of New Madrid and Related Families," which contains a data base name index of 29 pages, has just been released on CD. For further information, after January 1, you may go to my web site: www.marysueanton.com. I am away for the Christmas season but would be happy to answer specific questions about the Shy family later in January. Mary Sue Anton, author of "New Madrid: A Mississippi River Town in History and Legend, released in May 2009."
Dear Listers, I'm wondering if anyone can point me to any good sources to look for some missing ancestors. I have a family that migrated from Wayne County IL to New Madrid sometime around 1875. Most of them show up in the 1880 census but several of the children are missing and I'm wondering if they perhaps died or something else. I'm looking for an Marion WILSON born Illinois in 1867. I am told he often went by the name of "Fudge" so I suspect that he lived but cannot find any record of him. His parents died en route and so the children I do find were living with other families as hired help. I'm also looking for his brother Albert WILSON born IL 1863. Another Wilson child, Marvilla, married Nathaniel Richard Cole in Illinois and her family arrived in tact in New Madrid as I find them in the 1880 census. However, I cannot find where two of her children went: Sheridan COLE (b. 1872 IL) and Sherman COLE (b. 1875 KY). Did they marry in New Madrid or go off somewhere else. I cannot find them in any census after 1880. Thanks in advance for any help or direction. Happy holidays! Rick Wilson New York, NY

Parks entitled "Town of Canalou Was Named By Pioneer Railroad Builder Louis Houck". The article is quite lengthy but a few sentences are as follows: In 1904...."wild and woolly in those days..." and "The timber was very thick and vast areas of wild cane was found in abundance. Various kinds of wild animals such as deer, bear, wolves, and wildcats lurked about in this dense forest." I know my ggrandmother's family moved to Canalou c.1900 and I was told that she remembered her mother crying all the way there (from Warrick County Indiana) because she didn't want to live in such a "wild" place. A stave mill was built in the local area in 1906 because there was such an abundance of timber. Apparently the mill was a big reason why many people came to the area. By 1925 most of the timber usable for staves had been exhausted and the mill closed down. My mother was born there in 1927 and she remembers mostly farmland. Certainly sounds like it's quite possible your mother's childhood memory was based on fact although that "panther" could have been a bobcat as well. They used to be quite numerous in the southern portion of the state and were frequently shot by farmers. Their numbers are currently between 10,000-18,000 statewide. Supposedly the last known wild native mountain lion in Missouri was killed in 1927. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mary, thank you for responding. I am amazed to hear of big cats as late as 1940, especially near a populated area! I have checked to see if any of my WELLS and RIGGS lines might have been in Greene and Scott counties in IL, but have not yet found a connection. There would have been a cabin situated amongst tall grasses where panthers roamed. The time frame of this legend would have been 1912-18. Scott County, 1911, is the last documented area where my grandfather, Edwin Finley WELLS, and his family lived but to date I've not found any reference to panthers and tall grasses in that area. The family previously would have lived in New Madrid County where their last two children were born. My mother, Daisy (WELLS) RIGGS, born there in 1910, related her terror when panthers got on the roof and tried to get down the chimney when she was "real little". Her older sister, Ada, spotted the tail of a panther in the tall grasses and her father shot it. Can anyone tell me of an area in southeastern Missouri where this may have occurred?
