Neat stuff, Sandi! Hey, in the body of Bunk's interview his date of birth has been mistyped as 1979. ----- Original Message ----- From: SandKatC@aol.com To: MONCRIEF-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2000 1:03 PM Subject: [MONCRIEF-L] WPA - INDIAN PIONEER PAPERS - OKGENWEB Hi All: Since a number of old families went out to Indian Territory, I wanted to list the below for anyone searching in that area, now Oklahoma. A number of my old family did the WPA interviews in the 1930s and they are super interesting. The names are shown of each person who was interviewed. If it's in red you can click on it and read the interview. If you find relatives on the extensive list, you may send for copies of the papers. Happy Hunting! Sandi :) http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/pioneer/pioneer.htm INDIAN PIONEER PAPERS [IPP] aka INDIAN PIONEER HISTORY [IPH] These interviews deal with people of all nationalities with first-hand experience of Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory, not just the Indian population. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ There are only two complete bound sets of originals. * Western History Collections at the University of Oklahoma * Archives and Manuscripts Division, Oklahoma Historical Society Copies cannot be made from these one-of-a-kind books, but may be made from the microform. The OHS index is more comprehensive... listing localities, events, customs, places, people, etc. and makes the OHS set the most valuable. The best place to view the volumes and to consult the [card file] index is at OHS. The bound set at the Archives consists of 112 volumes. There is no volume 111. There are over 55,000 pages in this set and over 85,000 index cards, many with several entries. These interviews include quite a bit of genealogical information. The set and index have been microfilmed by the Archives and can be purchased. The Friends of the OHS Archives are currently considering the possibility of putting this collection on CD in the not too distant future. OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY - Roll/Volume Index The bound set at OU has been put on microfiche. It is available for purchase from Norman Ross Publishing, NY. Per the librarian in the Western History Collections - they have a card catalog of the index on site at the University of Oklahoma, Western History Library.[10-98] University of Oklahoma (OU) and the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS), Archives and Manuscripts Division indices are different because they were done separately after the volumes were bound. Both sets have card indices, but since they were bound differently, you can't use the index at OU for the set at the OHS Archives or vice versa. Other facilities with microform copies of the Indian Pioneer Papers Above information provided directly and indirectly by Sharron Ashton, Gay Wall, Jerri Chasteen, Mary Jane Warde, Wally Waits, John Berry, and others... The following index was complied from a microfiche index of "Indian Pioneer Papers Project, part of the Western History Collection, University of Oklahoma" ordered from the Family History Center (FHC) * . The number of the microfiche is shown for each volume which can be ordered through the Mormon Family History Library (FHL) for .15 cents per microfiche for indefinite use at the library in your area. Hi All: The below looks like something of interest. I know I want to see it. Sandi :) ===== Three years ago the U.S.-based Public Broadcasting Service aired the original "Ancestors" TV series. Now, in cooperation with Brigham Young University, a new edition of this television look at family history will premier beginning the first week of June 2000. This latest effort will include thirteen new episodes focused on the various sources genealogists can use to trace their family trees, and a new companion manual, authored by Jim Tyrrell, has been produced for this series. For specific information on when this new Ancestors series will air in your area, please contact your local PBS affiliate.

Well, May 8, 1674 as an arrival date for John is getting pretty darned specific! Was your source willing to share how he came by this particular date? If he knows the date of arrival, it seems more than likely he also knows the point of departure, doesn't it? Does this mean I can put my snorkel away? John A. Moncrief
Hi Moncrief's, I have just had the nicest talk for the past 45 minutes with a California Moncrief who submitted the original Thomas material to LDS. It was unsubstantiated then and still is. He got his information from Sir Ian Moncrieffe before his death and through two other noted seachers. He has loads of supporting information on John. I mentioned seeing records for Moncrief's in the 1200's and he suggested that if I followed then down I would eventually connect. That is a possibility. He said that 3 Moncrief's came over and this is where we get our Charleston, Currituck and New England lines. He doesn't think we went to Ireland but we can't discount any possibilities. He read me from some of his books. He quoted the following: Abstracts of North Carolina Wills by Grimes. (John and Mary's will is in this one) Colonial Records of NC by William Saunderson. Virginia Historical Indexes. Cavaliers and Pioneers by Nugent Virginia Land Grants. According to this researcher John came over on May 8, 1674. This one has been to Scotland and even called there doing research. Looks like we need to dig in and get to work. It appears that we need to find new ties. I am going to do some of this support reading. We had a most interesting ancestor. Sylvia __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Good morning! I've recently met an exceedingly pleasant gentleman, a Mr. Richard Burnett, who is a grandson of Stephen Price Moncrief (son of Stephen Jefferson Moncrief). He is quite the Revolutionary War devotee and has recently made application to the DAR listing Raiford Moncrief Ragsdale as his ancestor who served in the Revolutionary War. Mr. Burnett has not, heretofore, been actively involved in genealogy, but now seems genuinely excited about "discovering" his roots, and I'd like to help him with his application. I believe there are several other family members he might rather submit (or append his application with), but wonder if someone might have more complete information for him than I do... As I recall, William Alexander and Elizabeth Simmons Moncrief had four sons (William Alexander, Sampson, Caleb and Josiah) who served in the Rev. War (Continental Line). Am I correct, and does anyone on the list have proof they are willing to share to help out a cousin? Thanks, John A. Moncrief --part1_b0.324106d.26153a7c_boundary--
Dennis, Just guessing, mind you... trying to stir up a little trouble. Currituck Deed Book 3 records that William (John's brother) sold his plantation (recorded April 5, 1737) to Isaac Davis for 100 pounds. "current money of North Carolina." The deed describes the land as "160 acres being the plantation and tract of land where-on said William Muncrief lately lived -- South Side of North-West River, beginning at the River Pequosen, running along by Thomas Muncrief, to Daniel Glasco Jno. to land formerly belonging to John Muncrief. This document makes it clear that John, youngest of the three sons of John, (the first American Moncrief), had sold somehow disposed of his land sometime before. The document doesn't indicate what happened to him. He may have died; he could have bought another plantation; OR he may have gone to Charleston to become a founder of the Charleston Moncriefs. Sure would be neat if they were tied together as (otherwise) John just disappears from the face of the earth! John John, I have been trying to hook this SC branch up tp the NC or Va branch and am not having much luck. Have a little on the SC branch of Moncriefs. Dennis
Is anyone working on the Robert/Richard/etc Moncriefs out of Charleston? I'm wondering whether (or not) a connection has ever been proven between (Princess Anne) John's son John and the Charleston Moncriefs... Thanks, John
Hi, Everyone sure is quiet. I'm sure for the most part you are like me and a working person who wishes there was nothing more to do than be a genealogist! I found out the name of the original submitter to LDS for the material that Thomas is the father of John. It was done in the 80's but the person still has the same address. Hopefully they will answer my written request. When material is submitted to LDS there is documentation but of course, we are dealing with something that is difficult to accurately document. There are LDS records going back to the 1200's on Moncriefs. Maybe if we can settle who the father is we can get back further. Of course, we are expecting John to go to Virginia with snorkel and check out the cemetery under water. Sylvia Skipper PS Sorry about double entry. I have several addresses and more than one ISP. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com
Hi All: I thought the below might be of help to someone on the list. Is anyone out there? Sandi :) List Owner ANYBIRTHDAY.COM is a great source for locating the living, including street addresses and telephone numbers. On the other hand, if you are in the database and do not wish to be, there is a quick and easy way to remove all information about yourself. Go to <http://www.anybirthday.com/> and click on PRIVACY, then "Opt Out Option." The Opt Out Option allows you to purge your record completely from its public database, as well as prevent your data from again being gathered by it from other sources. Anybirthday.com claims to have more than 130,000,000 records, each derived from non-privileged public access information sources and that information found at anybirthday.com can be found elsewhere by "anyone with a simple knowledge of public record access."
Hi All: I thought you might like to have the below in the event you didn't know about the update. This is something to bookmark, for sure. Sandi :) List Owner Social Security Death Index Interactive Search or ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX (SSDI) UPDATE. The February 2000 update of the SSDI is now available to be searched at RootsWeb, making RootsWeb's SSDI database the most current available with a total of 63,305,772 records, significantly more than the total of 62,917,259 records in the January 2000 update. The reason for the nearly half-million records increase in just one month is that RootsWeb's Randy Winch noticed a glitch in the way the government handles the updates, figured out what to do to make it right, then completely rebuilt RootsWeb's database from the updates. In the process, nearly a half-million records that had been missed in the past were discovered and included in the current version of RootsWeb's SSDI database.
