    1. [MONCRIEF-L] BOOK: THEY SAY THE WIND IS RED
    2. Hi All: I wanted to share the below information with you as I'm some don't know about the book that Jacqueline Anderson Matte has written. I asked Jackie if it would be okay to post the below information on this list. I'm hearing a lot of raves about this book from those who have recently purchased it. If you are interested, please go to the below URL <http://freepages.cultures.rootsweb.com/~choctaw/windred.htm> Sandi :) *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ABOUT THE BOOK They Say the Wind is Red is the moving story of the Choctaw Indians who stayed behind when their tribe was relocated. In doing so they were continually subjected to attempts to extort from them their land rights by so-called legitimate government agents. Throughout the 1800's and 1900's they repeatedly tried to obtain the right from the government to choose their own agents so unscrupulous people who would steal their land and money would not take advantage of them. During this time they have always maintained their Indian communities even when government census takers listed them as black or mulatto, when they listed them at all. In the South there were only two races—white or black. Mrs. Matte spent over 15 years researching the MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians for documentation required for the federal acknowledgment they have sought for 169 years. Compiling a written history for the "oral history," which the tribe has used for hundreds of years, Ms. Matte documents an unbroken chain of a people whose ancestors once owned a part of the Old Mississippi Territory. The U.S. government does not recognize their oral history, acknowledged by sociologists for ancient cultures, but it powerfully portrays the people who have passed it down from generation to generation.

    1. [MONCRIEF-L] OUR CHOCTAW HERITAGE - SAMPSON & SOPHIA MONCRIEF
    2. Hi Olive: This is the information you requested. It's rather basic and if you read the interview with Sarah Ann [MONCRIEF] HARLAN, it's mentioned in there, also. Sandi :) OUR CHOCTAW HERITAGE In 1849, with pressure on Congress increasing, the gov’t made Indian removal mandatory instead of voluntary. They promised to pay expenses and furnish a year’s rations for those being removed to the west. The only other choice remaining to the Indian was to cede their property to the gov’t and enter the Indian Reservation set up for them in Alabama. Sophia and Sampson MONCRIEF, mother and father of Susan McCLAIN, visited William MONCRIEF, who had stayed in the Choctaw Nation instead of returning to Alabama with Susan and James McCLAIN. They, during their visit, were intrigued by what they saw and returned to Alabama to encourage their children to go west. Taking the advice of their mother and father seriously, the three married daughters of Sophia and Sampson MONCRIEF: Mary Ann [MONCRIEF] and her husband Robert McCARTY, Sarah [MONCRIEF] and her husband Erasmus Bryant HAWKINS and Susan [MONCRIEF] and her husband James McCLAIN, enrolled with the emigration agent and booked steamboat passage along with their brother, Robert MONCRIEF. --- In 1853 Sophia MONCRIEF, the mother of Susan MONCRIEF, died and Sampson MONCRIEF decided to sell his Alabama plantation and join his married children in Indian Territory. Two of the sons-in-law, James McCLAIN and Robert McCARTY, were called to come to Alabama and settle the estate of Sophia MONCRIEF. After the business was completed and the plantation was sold, Sampson MONCRIEF, his two children still at home, and his slaves began the long trip to Skullyville County. The trip was mainly made by wagon and hack but many of the slaves walked the entire distance. Sampson MONCRIEF settled on land at the junction of the Poteau and Arkansas rivers. The rich farm lands produced well and the slaves were happy and well cared for. Sampson made a great deal of money and had a bad habit of carrying large sums on his person. In January of 1856 Sampson disappeared and was never found. It was a assumed that he had been killed and robbed since it was known that he had been carrying $20,000 in gold when he disappeared. A reward of $10,000 was offered for information leading to finding him and, though the country was full of searchers, nothing helpful was ever learned.

    2. Dennis Muncrief
    3. For those Moncriefs who are looking for a good site on the Civil War (or War of Northern Aggression), This one is a whiz-bang. I just ran across the military orders for Ft Arbuckle and Ft Washita in Indian Territory during this period. It also had the arrest warrant for General Pike. Those Moncriefs that had connections in the Territory during the Civil War will find this very interesting. It had the muster list of men inducted in the area of Ft Arbuckle, IT and other areas. Many, Many Links. It will keep you busy reading for the next year. These papers list many names, dates and places. Dennis http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/warweb.html

    1. [MONCRIEF-L] WPA - INDIAN PIONEER PAPERS - OKGENWEB
    2. Hi All: Since a number of old families went out to Indian Territory, I wanted to list the below for anyone searching in that area, now Oklahoma. A number of my old family did the WPA interviews in the 1930s and they are super interesting. The names are shown of each person who was interviewed. If it's in red you can click on it and read the interview. If you find relatives on the extensive list, you may send for copies of the papers. Happy Hunting! Sandi :) http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/pioneer/pioneer.htm INDIAN PIONEER PAPERS [IPP] aka INDIAN PIONEER HISTORY [IPH] These interviews deal with people of all nationalities with first-hand experience of Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory, not just the Indian population. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ There are only two complete bound sets of originals.  * Western History Collections at the University of Oklahoma * Archives and Manuscripts Division, Oklahoma Historical Society Copies cannot be made from these one-of-a-kind books, but may be made from the microform.  The OHS index is more comprehensive... listing localities, events, customs, places, people, etc. and makes the OHS set the most valuable. The best place to view the volumes and to consult the [card file] index is at OHS.  The bound set at the Archives consists of 112 volumes. There is no volume 111. There are over 55,000 pages in this set and over 85,000 index cards, many with several entries. These interviews include quite a bit of genealogical information. The set and index have been microfilmed by the Archives and can be purchased. The Friends of the OHS Archives are currently considering the possibility of putting this collection on CD in the not too distant future.  OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY - Roll/Volume Index The bound set at OU has been put on microfiche. It is available for purchase from Norman Ross Publishing, NY. Per the librarian in the Western History Collections - they have a card catalog of the index on site at the University of Oklahoma, Western History Library.[10-98]  University of Oklahoma (OU) and the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS), Archives and Manuscripts Division indices are different because they were done separately after the volumes were bound. Both sets have card indices, but since they were bound differently, you can't use the index at OU for the set at the OHS Archives or vice versa.   Other facilities with microform copies of the Indian Pioneer Papers   Above information provided directly and indirectly by Sharron Ashton, Gay Wall, Jerri Chasteen, Mary Jane Warde, Wally Waits, John Berry, and others... The following index was complied from a microfiche index of "Indian Pioneer Papers Project, part of the Western History Collection, University of Oklahoma" ordered from the Family History Center (FHC) * . The number of the microfiche is shown for each volume which can be ordered through the Mormon Family History Library (FHL) for .15 cents per microfiche for indefinite use at the library in your area.
