My mother is Leona Schluss..her mother was Louise or Maria Louise Walkenbach daughter of Catherine. Louise was married to Wassenburg which produced three children Emma, Anne and Madeline..Anne was married to Bill Fricke and I guess stayed in Hermann the others in that branch headed west to California and stayed here.My grandmother Louise Walkenbach-Wassenburg then married Theodore Schluss and that union produced my mom. She was 14 years old when they left there.. I was told my grandmother had a boarding house in Hermann and made wine for the catholic fathers. My mother was a great source of family history and I would love to talk with other family members to exchange information. DO you life in Hermann and has the Walkenbach branch ever had a family re-union? Chris I have an aol address if you would e-mail for further data I would really appreciate it. I hav! e more family here in California and we used to gather all the time. The elders have all passed away and the elder cousins are still here..daughters of Louise still living are Marlou (Madelines only child) and Dolly (Annes) surviving daughter..Dolly is the daughter of Bill Fricke and Ann Wassneburg. My e-mail is Margeortiz@aol.com..Thanks for your response Your California Cousin Margie

I fear that the marriage certification for George Mouser and Phoebe Best was burned in the 1864 Montgomery Co. courthouse fire in 1864 and therefore lost. As a stab in the dark you might wish to query the St. Louis Co. MO Rootsweb site to see if they can do a lookup for the marriage in their book, St. Louis Marriage Index, 1804-1876, published by the St. Louis Genealogical Society. Good luck on your research. Does anyone having information regarding Rev Robert Baker who organized the first Methodist church in Montgomery County? Is there any records of this church? Rev Robert Baker was my 4th great grand father. I am intersted in finding any information on him especially his children. Thank you, Judy Hawman A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri - Montgomery County Drury and Henry Clanton, of Tennessee, settled on a branch called "Pinch*" about five miles south of Danville, in 1818. Drury Clanton was a Methodist preacher, and it was at his house that the first Methodist church in Montgomery County was organized, by Rev. Robert Baker and himself, about the year 1819. A Sunday-school was also organized at the same time and place, and the first camp-meeting in Montgomery County was held there, on what was called the Loutre camp ground.

Their web site is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mosccgs/ You may find a marriage listing for your ancestors in one of their marriage books. Do check Publications List: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mosccgs/publications/pb_bmd.html If it exists in one of these publications, then, you may wish to obtain a photocopy of the marriage certification from the Recorder of Deeds in St. Charles Co. MO. You may want to call the Recorder of Deed's office first to see if they have the certification or if it is in the Missouri State Archives. Also, if they have it, then, the pricing for obtaining a photocopy. Hope this helps. Regards, Dan Smith

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZKB.2ACE/208.5.1 Message Board Post: You had emailed me recently through ancestry.com about your Missouri Mousers & Bests who moved to Hempstead Co AR. The info I have says that Isaac Best lived in Montgomery County, Missouri. The Callaways had come with Daniel Boone to Missouri and had a land grant in Madison County MO near Moses Austin’s lead mine (this area originally called St. Genevieve District). Isaac Best and some of the Mousers and Callaways left Missouri in the early 1820s to go to Texas to be part of Stephen F. Austin’s Colony on the Brazos River. They came to AR with Thomas Eads (born 1779 VA), the Smiths, Clarks, Buchanans, Jones, Watsons, Henleys, Houses, Holders, Rices, Warners, and others. Isaac Best stopped at Rocky Mound in Hempstead County, Arkansas and stayed almost 10 years before going on to Texas (later died in Texas in 1838). Many of the others stopped in Clark County AR. Isaac Best’s daughter Phoebe married George Mouser and another daughter Polly married James Cantley. Phoebe & George’s son John Mouser started Oak Grove Methodist Church just outside of Hope AR & he married Anna Nations, daughter of Nathaniel Nations. After Anna died, John married her sister Francis (Franky) Nations, who was the widow of Joseph East. Much of this came from the Mouser book that’s in the Hope (Hempstead Co AR) library. In the Hempstead Co AR Marriage book, I see several Mouser marriages: In 1858=David Mouser, 18, to Margaret Ann Kirk, 16. In 1849=George Mouser 25 to Lucinda Venable 19. In 1858=Henry Mouser 17 to Rebecca E. Baker 16. In 1844=Isaac Mouser 23 to Eliza Ann Brummell. On 6 April 1836= John Mouser to Anna Nations. In 1855=John Mouser 24 to Mary Ann Archer 16. In 1861=Stephen Mouser, over 21, to Martha Morgan 22. On 3 Aug 1848 in Hope AR=Margaret Best Mouser (born 3 Sept 1832 Hope AR as daughter of George Mouse & Phoebe Best; Margaret died 6 Aug 1896 at Christie Chapel / Emerson AR) married Thomas Guy Eads (b 1826 AR, d 1904 Christie Chapel/ Emerson AR).…this Thomas was son of Samuel Eads Jr. Note that Margaret died 6 Aug 1896 in Columbia Co AR. Thomas Guy Eads was considered a great hog raiser and lived in Emerson area which later became southern part of Nevada County AR. Margaret & Thomas Eads had 5 children: Sarena Adeline Eads b 1849 (m: Andrew B. Walker); Martha Willie Eads b 1851, Mary Cathern Eads b 1852 (m: Thomas Hampton Baucum), Charles and Samuel (all five mentioned in Thomas Eads will; Will Book C, page 65). In Aug 1844=David F. Mouser (born abt 1823 MO as son of George Mouser) to Sarah / Sally Francis Eads (daughter of Samuel Eads Jr.). David & Sally had 2 children: John B. Mouser b 1848 & Mariah E. Mouser b 1850. In 1851=Martin Mouser b 1827 to 18-yr-old Elizabeth Eads (born 1833 AR as daughter of Samuel Eads Jr. & Mary B. I also descend from some of the Bests through John Best, who married Drucilla Banks about 1784 in VA. They had nine children: Levi, Drusilla, Polly, Banks, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, Cathy, Samuel and John Best. Their daughter Sarah Jane Best married Elisha Hall, and they had a daughter Drucilla Hall married William Bird Greer in 1819 in Bedford Co VA. These Bests most likely connect to yours because some of my Greers married into the Callaways back about 1800 in Virginia.

Montgomery was part of St. Charles County until the division late in 1818. The 1817 Territorial Census for St. Charles County is located on the Callaway County website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~mocallaw/census.html Some names that are shown on the 1817, do not appear in the 1819 for St. Charles County becuae of the formation of MontogmeryCounty. the original list of names in the 1817 Cote San Dessein Township show as neighbors the following: Best, Isaac 1 male age 18-45, 4 males under 18, 1 female over age 14, 1 female under age 14, 1 slave aged under 14. Cantley, James is the next entry Best, John 1 male aged 18-45, 2 females over age 14 Mowser, George 1 male over age 45, 1 male aged 18-45, 2 males under age 18, 1 female over age 14, 1 female under age 18. This 1817 enumeration is extremely important for Montgomery County researchers. Particularly the township of Cote San Dessein, which was completely lost from the original county. Other townships also lost population in the 1818 division of land, due to Pike and Lincoln Counties also being formed in 1818. Betty
