Accidentally Shot at Madison "Robert Smith, 32, employee of the Art Riley store at Madison was accidentally shot in the chest with a shotgun early Monday morning, and was taken to Woodland Hospital at Moberly in serious condition. The accident occurred as Smith was taking a .410 gauge shotgun from the back of his truck at the Riley business house. In some manner, it was discharged, the shot striking Smith in the chest. It was believed that some may have penetrated his lungs. There were no eyewitnesses to the accident, Mayor Riley said. Riley and others hear the shot and went to investigate, finding Smith beside the truck. He was taken to the hospital by Riley. Smith, married and father of a 4- yr-old son, had been hunting Sunday and had left the loaded gun in the truck. While Mr. Smith remains in critical condition, he was reported better Thursday morning. If he continues to improve, he will probably undergo surgery for removal of shot lodged in his chest." Copyright notice: All transcriptions in this email are copyrighted by their creator.
