Atterbury, Jr. Prominent Citizen Died Thursday "Joseph W. Atterbury, Jr., lifelong resident of Madison, died at 5:15 a.m., August 25th, 1955. Mr. Atterbury, the son of I.N. and Mary C. (Baker) Atterbury, was born September 5th, 1869. He was cashier and director of the Madison Bank from 1889 to 1919 and chairman of the board and president of the Madison Bank from 1920 to 1955. He was succeeded by his son, Newton, to his position in the bank. He owned and farmed several hundred acres of land in Monroe County and was owner of Atterbury Farms and had bred, sold and shown saddle horses for 50 years. He was a life long Democrat and was a Colonel on Gov. Donnelly's staff from 1944 to 1948. Mr. Atterbury was a graduate of the Missouri University in 1888, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was also a member of the Missouri Banker's Association and was presented a plaque at the 1954 state meeting for having serve the most years in active banking of any member in the state - 66 years. He was a member of Rotary International, the Masonic lodge and the Eastern Star. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Survivors are his wife, the former miss Beula Briscoe of Ralls County to whom he was married September 29, 1898; one son, Newton Atterbury, State Comptroller and Budget Director, his son's wife, Mary Hintz Atterbury of Jefferson City, Mo., a sister-in-law, Mrs. Eugene Atterbury of Madison and a niece, Mrs. Mary Atterbury Alston of St. Louis. His only brother, Eugene Atterbury, died February 13, 1953. The body will be taken to the family home, Friday at 10:00 a.m. where it will remain until the funeral hour. Funeral services will be conducted at the Madison Christian Church, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, by Representative C.D. Hamilton, Presbyterian minister of Ralls County. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery." Many Out-Of-Town Friends Attend Atterbury Funeral "Funeral services for Joseph W. Atterbury, Jr., banker and prominent citizen of Madison were held Saturday in the Christian church, conducted by the Rev. C.D. Hamilton, Presbyterian minister, who is now representative from Ralls county. A Masonic service was held at the graveside by Marvin Meals and the Madison Masonic Lodge. Mr. Atterbury had been associated with the Madison Bank first as cashier and later as the president for 66 years until his health failed him in January. George Hodgman sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" with Mrs. Hodgman at the organ. A letter of condolence from the Second Christian Church was read by the minister. Among those at the home and at the church service from out-of-town were: Mr. and Mrs. Jas. A. Dacey, Mrs. Eugene Atterbury, Mr. and Mrs. F. Alston, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Atterbury, and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence, all of St. Louis; Mrs. H.B. Atterbury, H. Baker Atterbury and Mrs. Warren Surber, Columbia. M.E. Morris, director of revenue, Al Aranson, collector of revenue; Dave Bryant, motor vehicle supervisor; Lee Cass, motor vehicle responsibility; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dunn, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hogg, Miss Wylma Young, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ruskin, Mrs. Neva Gaines, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Meyers, Ned Brooks, Alvin Papin, Harry Wisdom, O.L. Peters, Glen Croy, Mrs. Ruth Nutter, Bill Miller and Nathaniel Lee, all of Jefferson City. Raymond Madorin of National Stock Yards National Bank; Robert Allen, Perry State Bank; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Yancy, Hunnewell; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Baker, Monroe City.
