In the profile of J.J. McGee found on p. 574-575 of the 1884 History of Monroe and Shelby Counties, Missouri: Mr. McGee has a fine farm of nearly 400 acres in Jackson township, handsomely improved, including a commodious and tastily constructed dwelling and other comfortable buildings and has been a resident of what is now Monroe county for the past sixty years. He is one of the sterling citizens of the county, esteemed and respected wherever his upright character and good name are known. He is a native of Kentucky, born in Mercer county, November 20, 1819. His grandfather McGee was a pioneer settler of Kentucky from Virginia, a friend and associate of the Boones and Clarks and others who first blazed the way for civilization into the then wilderness of the Blue Grass State. John McGee, Mr. McGee's father, was born and reared in Kentucky and was there married to Miss Jane C. Curry. In 1822 they removed to Missouri with their family of children and first located in Howard county, near Fayette, but two years afterwards they came to what is now Monroe county, or rather a part of them did, for the father and one of the children never lived to make their home in this county. There were practiclaly no roads then and the prairie grass, not uncommonly as high as a man's head on haorseback, covered all the prairies, only broken now and then by the trail of the Indian and an occassional pioneer's wagon track or the tread of wolves or deer, or other wild animals. It was in the fall when the family started from Howard to Monroe county, and the grass, heavy and dry, was almost as quick to burn as powder. Mr. McGee, the subject of this sketch, was then a child four years of age. His father and an older sister were quite a distance behind the wagon driving their cattle, and the latter fell considerably behind, indeed, entirly out of sight. All of a sudden a fire came flying across the prairie with the speed of the wind, and the roar and crackle of cannon and musketry, traveling faster than any horse could run and taking a course by which it caught the father and daughter--it was impossible for them to escape. The flames that enveloped her, suffered himself to be so severely burned before he gave his own burning clothes any attention that both were burned to death, or so badly burned that they died within ten or twelve days afterwards. Medical attention was impossible, for there was not a doctor within 40 miles, and those that could be had, even beyond that distance, were scarcely ever found at home, for their practice covered so wide a region that they were almost constantly absent. The suffering of the father and daughter was intense, too terrible indeed, to be imagined, much less described. Such was the sad experience of the subject of this sketch on first coming to what is now Monroe county. Heaven grant that when the shadowy curtains of death shall be drawn about him, and his spirit shall take its leave from the county in which he has so long lived, its flight may be happier than his coming was. His mother was left with a large family of children, of whom he was the eldest, and he, with her help and prayers, went to work to provide the family a home and support them as best he could. Their lot was a hard one, but they proved equal to it, and in keeping with the noble heart that he had young McGee courageously went to work and succeeded in bringing up the children in comparative comfort. He lived to see them all married and settled in life and then himself was married to Miss Catherine E. Helm. She lived to brighten his home for many years, but at last was taken from him by the Grim Harvester of all. She left him five children: Alonzo T., Melissa, wife of George Neugent; William J., Mattie J. and Hettie E. In 1873 Mr. McGee was married to Miss Polly A. Vaughan, who now presides over his comfortable home.
Does anyone know who the second wife of Josiah Jackson McGee was? He was born Oct. 27, 1819 in Mercer Co., KY. Married my half-3rd great-grandaunt, Catherine Unice Helm, daughter of Joseph Helm and Nancy Wilcox, on Sept. 2, 1846 in Monroe County. They had, at least, six children: Alonzo Thomas, Sarah, Melissa, William J., Martha "Mattie", and Bettie. Catherine died in 1871. Jackson McGee is found in the 1880 Monroe Co., MO. census still living in Jackson Township with his son, William, and daughters, Mattie & Bettie. Reportedly, his wife was "Polly," age 50 who was born in about 1830 in MO. Her parents both were born in KY. Does anyone know who "Polly" was? Did she have any children from a previous marriage? Any information that you might be able to share would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Rod Green Austin TX

My interest in doing so is that My g grandfather was John Crow. His father name was Napoleon. I believe the Napoleon and Olivia you are searching for are my gg grandparents. The reasons I have made this connection are: I have identified on of my g grandfather John Crow's sibling and that is Ella Mae Crow who married George W. Littrell, Jr and they lived in Richwoods, MO(Franklin County). My g grandfather has 4 sons and one daughter whom he named Olivia. Ella Crow also named one of her daughters Olivia. My grandfather William R. Crow also spoke of his aunt "M", whom I would bet was Emma Crow. Also, the family bible that my aunt has sibling listed for John Crow, but the McKinney name is the only legible names. But, I will look farther. John Crow appears on the 1900 Camden County Census, but he and his wife Amanda Jane Lamb moved to Franklin County, MO sometime between 1900 and 1905. His daughter Olivi! a was born in Franklin County, MO in 1905. I will assist in any manner that I can. Thanks, Lisa
Searching for death/obit information on Susan Carrico Calhoun (b1840), daughter of Benedict Carrico, wife of Vincent B. Calhoun (b1839). No Calhouns appear after MO census 1880 and 1890. Susan appears to be alive as late as 1884-- found in Audrain, Monroe, Shelby Counties. Vincent was located in Mendocino Co, CA census 1890 with only son, Vincent, Jr., and was designated as "widower". Alfred later located in Ukiah, CA in 1902, died 1946 in San Joaquin Co., CA. I am not related to these people and have nothing further on them. This info from a book named PIONEER TIMES/July 1966 Vol. 10., NO 3 THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL DENT 1755-1834 Samuel Dent, according to census records, was born circa 1755, although his birthplace and his family ties have not been determined. Many Dent families settled originally in Maryland during the late 1600s and early 1700s. Some of these Dents are said to have emigrated from Yorkshire, England. Records in the Maryland Archives list a Revolutionary War service record of one Samuel Dent, of Capt. Clarkson's Company in the Charles Co., MD militia. Many of the Maryland Dents moved westward into neighboring Virginia. Courthouse records list a Samuel Dent in Henry and Franklin (formed 1786 from portions of Henry and Bedford) Counties, from about 1782, as the name appeared on a petition of inhabitants requesting that the county be divided and again on a land record in 1787. Oaths of Allegiance were recorded for Peter Dent and John Dent in 1777 in Bedford Co., Va. Samuel Dent married MARTHA (PATSY) HARRIS, daughter of Revolutionary War Soldier, HENRY HARRIS and ANNIE BIRD/BYRD of that! same area, although the Harrises had lived in pre-revolutionary war days in Orange Co. and possibly in Albermarle Co. Patsy Harris Dent was born 23 May 1770. Samuel Dent sold his 150 acres on reedy Creek in 1795 to John Dent, and by 1796, both Samuel Dent and Henry Harris were living in Madison Co., KY., and were listed on the annual tax list. In 1817, Samuel and Patsy Dent decided to head west and once again sold land, this time, 188 acres on Drowning Creek in Madison Co., KY. (Book M, page 212) A year later, the Dents were over in Franklin Co., MO. Many of the other settlers of Franklin Co., MO were familiar names from KY. About twelve years later, in 1830, Henry Harris, Samuel's father-in-law, being old and infirm, divided and deeded all his Madison Co., KY property to his children and grandchildren. Samuel Dent died in 1834 in Franklin Co., MO. The inventory of his estate was witnessed by John Goode, William Truesdell and C. B. Hinton. Alexander Chambers was executor of the will. The inventory contained notes on H. Fackler, A. Chambers, Samuel Beatty, Dyson Johnson, William Parks, John Harris, Prior Brauly and L. D. Walls. Securities of the estate were William Truesdell and Sion Pritchett. (Note: Anthony S. Garrett died in 1855 in Monroe Co., MO. Bailey Dent was a witness. Garrett (1850 census) lived with his grandson, John Truesdell. Perhaps the William Truesdell, mentioned above, was related to him). WILL OF SAMUEL DENT IN FRANKLIN CO., MO. In the name of God Amen. It must be an amazing feeling to see the farms created by immigrants who changed the western landscape. In 1880, my great grandfather was setting up a homestead west of Fargo, Dakota Territory near New Buffalo. There were no stately buildings in Dakota, although development happened very quickly, a few years earlier buildings of any sort were sparse. His homestead was part of the first Danish settlement at Hill Township in Dakota Territory, which dissipated years later There were ANDERSEN's in that community, both Dane and Norwegian. As requested, I will give you a quick run down of the family names, and then a little background on my search. Peter’s brothers were FREDERIK 1846, RASMUS (ROBERT) 1851, NIELS (NELS) 1853, HANS CHRISTIAN (1855). There were two sisters BODIL KRISTINE (1861) and MAREN (1863). All are children of JØRGEN HANSEN of Denmark. Fred, Robert, Neils, Peter and Mary came to America. We know from archived records that in 1885 all of the brothers who emigrated were in the US. ROBERT is the only one I can find with certainty in the 1880 census. We know more about his family, and this has given us insight into their lives I did not think possible. Mary comes with Robert when he returns from Denmark in 1886-87. NEILS and ROBERT came to MICHIGAN. NEILS settles in MINNESOTA, Robert starts in DAKOTA, returning to SOUTH DAKOTA, then MINNESOTA, then NORTH DAKOTA, then SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA in that order. MARY comes with Robert to SOUTH DAKOTA, and marries there a couple of years later, remaining in Dakota. Peter and Fred are less known to us. Grandma wrote that PETER settled in the PARIS, MISSOURI area. I think he may have come from Denmark around 1880, but due to the little information we have, I can't be sure. FRED settled in the DAKOTA TERRITORY around this time as well. Not cut out for farm life, he returns to DENMARK, but eventually lives in LOS ANGELES, CA with his second wife. I know little of his first wife, but he did also use LOGAN as part of his name, for reason's I don't understand. I knew the first names and order of the children, plus my great grandfather’s birth date, and that he came with another brother to America when he was about 20. The emigration information for ROBERT (RASMUS) and NIELS (NELS) was easy to find, and told me the family home was VÆGGERLØSE, MARIBO, on Falster Island. Checking with the archivist in Denmark with access to church records, we are now sure of their birthplaces and dates. FRED was born in SKELBY, further south, but all the others were born in Højet and Væggerløse area, Maribo, Falster Island. Regarding graves, I did look for information available through the internet, and I found a PETER JOHNSON in the Walnut Grove, PARIS MO cemetery who is buried with wife and child. It appears to be a family plot, numbers Z133 to Z135 with a PETER J, HANNAH K. AND KITTIE H (infant) resting there. I wrote for more information, but received nothing in return. It would be lovely to find out what happened to Peter. Regarding the MADISON name, I don’t recall hearing it, nor ANDERSON, but the Patronymic naming system really fouls up persons’ efforts as does the generalizing of names and diversification of spellings in America. I can check with our family historians to see these names ring any bells. I took a look for myself, with the information you had, and came up with nothing on the emigration side, but there are immigration records I think. With three children, and fairly close dates, as well as a narrow emigration window of maybe three years, I think it is possible to find them, regardless of the names. Happy hunting! Rhea.

Is the Saphronia 'Jane' that you mention the same person as Jane Hay? This is what I have - some information was provided by you and Marie McKinney, and the rest of the data was sent from Franklin, Monroe and Washington County: C. P. (Charles Peyton) McKinney - It is believed that Charles was born abt. Jun 1855 in Russell County, KY, but I have not been able to confirm it. Per the census information, C. P. claimed that his father was born in VA, and his mother in KY, but it hasn't been confirmed yet. We now know that he was married (at least) to Martha Jane Crow (m: 26 Aug 1880) and to Olivia Meason or Mason (m: 25 Dec 1883). Martha (b: abt 1848, d: abt 1881) was married prior to Hiram Collins (m: 1866), and apparently died shortly after the birth of her son George Akers McKinney; Olivia (b: 1845, d: 1922) was married at least once prior to Napoleon B. Crow (m: 24 Dec 1863). Olivia Chiles Meason - Olivia may have been called "Ellen", but this has not been confirmed. Her surname may have been spelled "Mason". Chiles may or may not be her middle name. Olivia's parents were: William Hightower MEASON b. 1811 in Nelson County KY. William was married to Jane HAY sometime in 1840 in Clark County, MO. Two conflicting dates are 27 Aug 1840 and 03 Oct 1840. Jane was born about 1821-1824 in VA, d. about 1852. William and Jane had 5 known children: 1) Agnes MEASON b. 1842 in MO 2) Albert MEASON b. 1843 in MO 3) Olivia MEASON b. 26 JUN 1845 in Monroe County, MO, d. 1922 4) Charles MEASON b. 1847 in MO 5) Taylor MEASON b. 1849 in MO You have always been very helpful - if you have any additional information that can be provided regarding the McKINNEY, CROW and/or MEASON family(ies), that would be great.

I have 3 children listed- Robert, Lutie & Ruth. Lutie Gough married James_____. That's pretty much about it

I have asked about Falster and Douglas Co. Minnesota of the older JOHNSON clan here in Monroe County, Missouri and those names are not familiar to them but then we know very little along that line. One of Louse/Peter's daughters, Annie JOHNSON who married a LISECKI did later move from Monroe County to Bird Island, Minnesota but we don't know if she ever made connection with her father that we are searching for. My fathernlaw and his brother went with grandparents Andrew (son of Louse/Peter) and Emily JOHNSON to Minnesota to visit this daughter Annie in the 1940s. Running information by them can sometimes spark memories from their childhood so I continue to do that. They are fascinated that I have made connection with you and interested to know how you connect to the Danish JOHNSON family. About other Monroe Co. Danish folks --- We do know that there was a Danish man named Chester ANDERSON who lived on a nearby Monroe County farm but I have not looked into him at all yet. There was also living next door to the Louse/Maria JONSON and son Andrew household in 1880 census (Audrain Co. very near our spot in Monroe Co.) a household with Danish born John MADZSON and wife Maria and brother Hans MADZSON. Buried next to Louse's wife Maria/Mary E. is Andrew MADISON suspected to be her father. An uncle named John (unknown but we think MADISON) raised Andrew JONSON after his mother Maria/Mary died in 1888 and his father Louse/Peter left for Minnesota. From all of this I suspect Maria/Mary was a MADZSON/MADISON. Peter/Louse and Maria/Mary JOHNSON and children did move from their 1880 Audrain farm to a farm that borders the one I am writing from in Monroe Co., but it is all pretty close together. It is fascinating to be able to visit the very farms they lived on. If we make connection on all of this, I'll be sure and send you pictures of the farms and the stones in the neighborhood cememtery. My kids and I transcribed that cemetery and it is online n! ow, there very well may be more Danish immigrants buried there than what we know of so you may want to take a look to see if you see anyone familiar. It is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/audrain/audrain.htm and is called Antioch Cemetery. Graves are in both Audrain and Monroe Counties at this cemetery as it is right on the line. A very small town called Rowena is nearby and seems to be a focal point of the JOHNSON/MADISON clan but Monroe Co. addresses are Paris, MO and Audrain Co. addresses depending on the year could be Rowena or Thompson, MO. The graves of Mary E./Maria Johnson (Louse/Peter's wife) and Andrew Madison (suspected father of Mary E.) that I spoke of above are in that cemetery. Andrew Madison was Danish born and died in Audrain Co. of poison or so says his death record. Do you have records of Peter JOHNSON coming from Denmark to U.S. and was he accompanied by a wife and infant? I have searched and searched for this and without having better idea of the names it is difficult. Do you have any MADZSON/MADISON or ANDERSON connections? What were Peter JOHNSON's brothers names? Peter/Louse may have named some of his son's after his brothers but they were all fairly common names as you saw in my previous post. If my reasoning on the MADISON/JOHNSON connection is correct Louse/Peter named his first son Andrew after his father-n-law and one addtional son, John, after the brother-n-law that was a neighbor and later raised his son, Andrew. I don't know about Monroe Co. Missouri Danes being more civilized, LOL. But then I don't know much about Minn. Danes. The Danes here were farmers and some of their descendents (my husband and children) still are in the same spot. Emily, wife of Andrew (Louse/Peter's son) in her later years lived with son and daughternlaw in the very bedroom that my daughter now sleeps in. My father-n-law still owns the farm that Andrew JOHNSON farmed, but neither one of the Louse/Peter farms are still in the family. The Danish Johnson clan here seem to have been very inventive! The Johnson men were (and still are) constantly inventing new contraptions to make farm work easier. And many in the family are very gifted in mathematics and design/engineering as far as those contraptions. All the Johnson clan here seem to adore the water and it has always made me wonder if they came from somewhere in Denmark that was close to water. Looking forward to our joint investigation, wherever it leads, Rhonda
