I am a Great-great Granddaughter of Sarah Montague Stephens who married Amos Whitaker (also seen as Whittaker or Whiteaker). My Mother and I went to Monroe County last year on our way through to a family seeking trip to Calloway County. Amos Whitaker and his son, William Lee, are buried there. I did not know about the Embree cemetery at the time or we would have tried to go there as well. If you are interested in any more of Amos and Sarah's family info, please let me know. I have visited this cemetery back in 1969 and copied all the stones that I could find at that time. It is located on the Randolph/Monroe county lines. The land is now owned by a Hudson family, my mother believes it is Dewayne. My uncle on my father's side, not my Embree line, father use to own the land this cemetery is locaated on. When I went home about 3 years ago again visited this cemetery and it is in pretty bad shape. All of the stones are now down on the ground. If you go to Moberly and call my brother, Merold Devenport, he could give you directions to it. If you would like to see how your family ties in to the research I have done check out my web site www.geocities.com/janelack2. 2. Jim McBride
    3. Ruth, To the best of my knowledge, Ebenzer Walker McBride is not related to any of the below. I have done a 20 year search for the parents of Ebenezer Walker McBride. The most info that I have come up with is that his father may be Thomas A. McBride, birth place may be Kintyre region of Scotland. Ebenezer may have been born in either Rutherford Co., Tn or South Carolina in 1803 or 1805. He shows up in Boone Co.,Mo in 1820. He may have come from Kentucky or ?. He is my 2nd ggf. As far as I know, there are no Isaac McBrides in his line. Are you researching Ebenezer Walker McBride line? Jim McBride Rev. Ebenezer Hearn married Mary Walker whose aunt Jane Walker married Isaac McBride. The above sounds like he might be from this family. Do you have more on his parents or grandparents that might indicate he is of this family of Rev. Joseph Walker who came to Dallas Co. c 1820 who was first married to Jane Holmes, then Nancy Moore, then went to Tenn in 1833?

I knew it was on the road to the "poor farm" but wasn't sure which direction it was from Paris. I appreciate the information and your familiarity with the area. Do you live in Paris? The last time I was back it was like being in a time warp. Nothing seemed to have changed much in 20 years, the ladies in Jonesy's restaurant even remembered me. They were in the process of selling the restaurant at the time so it's probably different now. It sure seemed boring as a kid but from this perspective there doesn't seem to be a much better place to raise a family. Never was able to get into too much trouble, everyone in town knew everything that was going on. Thanks for your help.....

As you come east out of Paris on Highway 154 it is only about a mile and a half, I believe, from the Y where you turn on to 154. It is a large brick building out in the country. It will be on your left. First you come to a sizeable curve then the old poor farm. It has signs out front that says what is is now (a school/church, not sure what), It is about a quarter of a mile before you get to the golf course on your right, so you have gone too far if you see the golf course.

It is right on the highway, and very visible. The bridge on the highway that crosses the Elk Fork arm of Mark Twain Lake is just a few hundred yards past the cemetery. If you come to the bridge across Elk Fork you have gone a short ways too far. There is no church there any more, but the stones are easily seen from the road.
