    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SHUMAN, KELSAY, MORGAN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XKB.2ACE/247.1.1 Message Board Post: Karylon, Thanks so very much for your reply. I have some *hunches* on who this David Shuman is, but have as of yet found no proof. Here is what is known: In 1832, John Shuman died in Monongalia Co, VA (now WV) leaving a Will <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~shuman/settlement.html> in which he names his 13 children. At this point all of them have been identified EXCEPT David. Judging from known birth dates of several of the other children, and the order in which he is named in the Will, David's birth date is estimated as being approximately 1814-15. A David Shuman purchased land in Henry Co, IN in 1835. This land is just north of that of Joseph Shuman, which was purchased in 1833 and later. This Joseph is the oldest son of John; it is estimated that he was already living in Henry Co, IN as early as 1832, because he devised power of attorney to his brother-in-law and apparently did not return to VA when his father-in-law died in November of that year. Since no records regarding David Shuman have been found for this time period in VA, it is a reasonable assumption that the person listed as purchaser of land in Henry Co, IN in 1835 is the same David Shuman, and that he came with his older brother to the wilderness of central IN about 1832, perhaps almost immediately following their father's death. The estate was not settled until September 1834, and David made his purchase in 1835, when he would have been about 21 years old. There is just one problem with this Indiana scenario. We can find no trace of David after this. We have not found him listed in either the 1840 or 1850 census records for Indiana. We have found no marriage record for him in Indiana. What we HAVE found is this: a David Shuman married a Martha Kelsay in Morgan Co, MO on 24 August 1837. It appears that this same David Shuman purchased land in Moniteau Co, MO on 10 January 1840. And you have provided a continuation of his family history. So, the question remains: Is the David Shuman who married Martha Kelsay and was a landowner in Moniteau Co, MO the same David Shuman who was in Henry Co, IN in 1835, and are they both the same David Shuman who was the son of John Shuman of Monongalia Co, (W) VA? It is very interesting that you mention this MORGAN family of TX used the name Zacquiel and was originally from VA. That certainly provides further secondary suggestive evidence of some sort of tie between these families, since there was a Morgan family that settled in Monongalia Co, (W) VA, and for whom Morgantown, the county seat, is named. Several of their family members used the name Zacquiel. If you can contact any of the present descendants of the David Shuman/Martha Kelsay union, I would be most happy to correspond with them.
