Perhaps this will help narrow down some leads for you. For the 1880 MO census, I did a search for all male LONG's born in TN. 66 matches came back. I then looked for the male being b. in TN and the wife being b. in IL. The first match came back with the wife being only 3 years older than William, so this couldn't be a possibility.
