Robertson, of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, of which whe was a good and faithful member, and the remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery near Moreau church, by the side of her late husband, Joseph S. Springer, who on the 28th day of March, 1903, was called to his reward. Mrs. Springer, whose maiden name was Miss Ellen Giles, was born in Lebanon County, Pennsyhlvania, in 1836, and when a child came with her parents to Wayne County, Ohio, and there grew to womanhood. In 1859 she was married to Joseph S. Springer, and in 1866 came with him to Missouri and settled on the farm where they died. Five children, all of whom are respected citizens of this county, and several grand-children were at the bedside of their mother. In the death of Mrs. Springer these children have lost a loving, Christian mother, her friends a kind and faithful neighbor, and the community an honored and respected member. The large number of people who followed the remains to their last resting place, tell of the great esteem in which she was held by those who knew her. May we all join in saying, "The Lord Giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord." A Neighbor

Hi Diane, Yes, the offer still stands! And, I also have the 1880 census CD's as well. The 1900 census on genealogy.com is indexed by head of household only. I found nothing in either MN or WI for William Hand, William S. Hand, or W.S. Hand. Did he have any children? It is possible that he was living with a child's family at the time. If you could provide me with their names, I can see if they have him in their household in 1900. Does anyone on this list know anything about: Sarah Keen wife of James S. Keen of Audrain, CO -- I believe Sarah is the daughter of Robert Johnston who married Mary Ann Prewitt? I could be off a Johnston or so., By the way, Randolph Co., lister James Bagby has got a great website which has some JOHNSTONE information. This was a great help. I still have not seen a listing of all the children of the Capt. William H. Johnston and Rachel Spears. I'm judging by the will records that they have about 6 children, although I read somewhere, maybe mistakenly that they had 12? http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/a/g/James-Bagby/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-Index.html#Johnstone These families all have BOURBON CO., KY ties...and came to Callaway and Boone Counties -- and spread out. Sarah Keen wife of James S. Keen is listed in the administration of the estate of Capt. William H. Johnston of Boone CO., MO. Capt. Johnston was the father William H. Johnston who married Margaret Hutchinson -- Margaret's second marriage was to Nathaniel Leonard co-founder of the Ravenswood Stock Farm in Bunceton, MO. There appears to also be a connection to the CAVE and WILLIAMS families. Thomas J. Cave's will notes the administration as Henry Keene; final settlement Mar. 3, 1853. Heirs: Caroline Cave a sister, Cornelia, Sally Ann [aka Sarah?] and Leslie Johnson child of Mary Johnson dec., [I think this Mary Johnson is Mary Ann Prewitt -- wife of Robert Johnston notice the "s" is sometimes in and sometimes out? Does anyone know about this MARY?] Robert Johnson was the son of the Capt. William H. Johnson and Rachel Spears of Bourbon Co., KY. In another will from Boone Co., of Frances "Fannie" Williams, which is administered by Henry Keen; final settlement Feb. 14, 1848 notes daughter: Calma Cave, Mary Johnston and children; daughter Sophronia Williams and her children, d. Melvina Jordon, d., Sarah Keen, s. John B. Williams, s. Young J. Williams, granddaughter Mary Frances Cave, grandson Alonzo Cave. Sarah's mother notes several slaves in her estate being divided out to her children etc. Rachel Spears' mother Elizabeth Spears estate was probated in Boone Co., also notes the children of Capt. William H. Johnston and Rachel Spears -- several slaves are mentioned in her will.... she notes her grandchildren: Elvira Thomas, William Johnston, Jacob S. Johnston, Noah S. Johnston and John T. M. Johnston. My ancestors were slaves of William H. Johnston who married Margaret Hutchinson... Mr. Johnston died in Boone Co., MO and some slaves were rented and sold out of the estate. Some of the slaves were sold to his wife's brother James S. Hutchinson who sold slaves to Margaret's second husband Nathaniel Leonard. I am looking to trace the siblings of William H. Johnston and any slaves they may have received from their grandparents and parents. Secondly, William's grandfather Jacob Spears may have also given slaves to his children and grandchildren via his estate in Bourbon Co., KY. For anyone who is interested, I am happy to do looks up in my Boone Co. Wills and Administrations 1821-1870 and Boone Co. Wills and Administrations 1835-1850. As usual, I'm going to make my plea for slave related data... and if you can help me make the connections with these families above. James You just made my day about Laura Louella Johnston marrying William Benjamin Bagby. You know... I've been seeing listings for the Bagbys and the Hutchinsons and thinking.. what the heck is this? So here's the deal: Laura's parents are William H. Johnston and Sarah Ann Davis -- William's father is Robert C. Johnston -- who is the brother of William H. Johnston who married Margaret Hutchinson...who then married Nathaniel Leonard at Ravenwood in Bunceton. Robert and William's father was named Capt. William H. Johnston... and I missed entirely information on the Capt.'s parents. Robert Johnston and Margaret Peggy McClanahan. The McClanahans are big time intermarried in this family. I swear they are all cousins... William Hutchison's daughter Eliza married David McClanahan Hickman -- who was her cousin... yuck. Any way... I have the Boone Co. listing for Robert that your email helped me put together... Johnston, Robert -- Adm. Joel Prewitt, [Robert's wife's father] Gr. Feb 12, 1833, Final settlement, May 1837; Heirs: Mary Ann [Prewitt] Johnston widow; Joel William Johnston, Nancy Elizabeth Johnston, Robert Thomas Johnston and William Henry Johnston heirs. So the William Henry Johnson above is the one who married Sarah Ann Davis...and their daughter Laura Louella Johnston married William Benjamin Bagby. Wow... and I didn't know that the Capt. William H. Johnston and Rachel Spears had 12 children. I have alot of homework to do...!! In the entry for William H. Johnston -- No. 907 -- Adm. Moss Prewitt, Admr. Gr. Jan. 16, 1850, final settlement Feb. 10, 1854. heirs: Rachel Johnston, widow; Nancy Prewitt w. of Moss Prewitt; Margaret Bass w. of Eli Bass; Elvira Thomas wife of Robert S. Thomas; Emily Branham w. of Richard C. Branham; Jacob S. Branham; John T. Johnston; children of Eliza Hickman deceased who was daughter of William Johnston viz., William, James and David Hickman; Robert T. Johnston grandson of Robert T. Johnston; deceased; all of Boone County Mo; Sarah Keene wife of James S. Keen of Audrain Co., MO and remaining children of Robert Johnston dec. viz Joel P. Johnston, Nancy Thompson and William Johnston of Howard Co., MO As I write this I want you to know that I become very upset...[I cried the whole time typing this up thinking -- what the hell did I get myself into.. this is so HUGE -- so many people.. so many documents -- and so many slaves to check!] and I'm a little bit angry knowing that now I've got myself into this HUGE gig [so it's my own fault] where I have to look into the lives of all these people to find my family...and I am SO SAD and SO ANGRY...but what can I do but continue.. and my anger will do nothing for me but slow me down But your contribution and information has made me smile and be happy -- cause I know I'm still on the right track... and that is COOL! Correction: Jacob Spears and Elizabeth Keller are the parents of the following children: [Apparently Elizabeth's maiden name was Fry -- she married a Keller who died, then a Ewalt then SPEARS?] Solomon Abraham Rachel Rebecca [Matson] Sarah [first married Coleman -- then Jones] Noah -- http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/scott/spears.n.txt I think I said that Solomon and Elizabeth were the parents of Rachel Spears... and I was mistaken. Don't forget to check Early Bourbon Co., KY families here: http://www.shawhan.com/bourbonfamilies.html Also I just realized that the William Hutchinson in St. Louis in the early 1900s was the son of Benjamin Franklin Hutchinson -- who died in Kirkwood, St. Louis, MO in 1876. I've got a letter that his son William wrote to his wife Mary -- apologizing after an argument... a very sweet letter. Also I also didn't realize that Eliza Ann Hutchison who married Thomas Hickman married a second time to Mr. Ormrod and there was one son. Charles E. Leonard notes this in a letter to a cousin about the family tree. Hey folks... I was recently doing some research on the Hutchinson, Hickman, Nesbit, Wilson, Johnston, McClanahan families etc,. and I had no idea how inter-related they were...coming from Bourbon Co., KY and settling in Callaway, Boone, Clay, Cooper counties etc. The bios on the website for Bourbon Co., KY is excellent. These are the relatives of Daniel Boone - and it's a HUGE family. http://www.shawhan.com/bourbonfamilies.html I have been following the parents of Margaret Hutchinson who married Nathaniel Leonard at Ravenswood in Bunceton in Cooper Co. My ancestors were slaves in what appears to be a tremendous KY family whose ties stretch from Bourbon Co. KY to Pittsburg, PA and slave transactions in every direction. It has taken me awhile, but I finally have figured out that: Margaret's parents were Margaret Hickman and William Hutchinson -- they had 8 children: I ordered some documents via the Western Historical Manuscript Collection and it includes a letter from Hactier {not sure of spelling} Warfield to Wm. Hutchinson dated Aug. 22, 1882...he is the grandson of Lewis Hutchinson in Pittsburg PA... a son of William and Margaret Hutchinson noted above -- and he is looking for answers about his ancestors. Charles E. Leonard responds to Wm. Hutchison Esq., in 1893 that he knows little about the Hickmans. Another letter details all the children of William and Margaret born in Paris KY beginning with Jane in 1790. I will post this letter and its contents separately if anyone is interested. Let me know.. I can scan the letter or transcribe it.. it's four pages. FYI: Margaret's 1st husband was William H. Johnston -- his parents were Capt. William H. Johnston and Rachel Spears. William H. Johnston's sister Eliza Keller Johnston married Capt. David McClanahan Hickman. This lead me to discover that the Hickmans and Hutchinsons are a huge family related also to the Bass, Shackelford, Prewitt, Bass, Waller & McGavock... which in reviewing probate records etc., spans several decades of slave transactions between them all. I am somewhat discouraged. Interestingly enough Rachel's mother Elizabeth Spears estate was probated in Boone Co., -- the Spears have an interesting history. In an attempt to figure out more about William H. Johnston's mother Rachel Spears... I found a great detailed background about the Spears family.. and their connection to the Frys... amazing. http://www.shawhan.com/fry.html Here's a link on Noah Spears -- a son.. http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/scott/spears.n.txt I went through the Boone Co wills and administrations and compiled sort of a family tree of transactions for Hutchinson, Hickman, Johnston, Cave, Keene, Prewitt, Nesbit etc. and a couple caught my eye and made me check into SPEARS more: Spears, Elizabeth - No. 261 - Will. Wm. Johnston, Robt. Thomas, Execs. Gr. Jan. 23, 1837. F.S. Feb. 16, 1848. Heirs of s. Solomon Spears, s. Abram, s. Noah, heirs of d. Rebecca Matson, dec., Elizabeth Grimes [m. Cuthbert Hickman], Sarah Jones, Rachel Johnston, gr. d. Elvira Thomas, Wm Johnston, gr. s., Jacob S. Johnston, Gr.s. Noah S. Johnsont, John T. M. Johnston, Wit. Z. Milloney and Jonathan Douglas. [Rachel Spears m. Capt. William H. Johnston] Capt. William H. Johnston's estate was also probated in Boone Co., No 907; Jan 16, 185. and the final settlement Feb. 10, 1854 -- I don't have these documents... but I would be very interested in slaves in the family for both. Son William H. Johnston proceded both of his parents in death... and his slaves went to his widow Margaret Hutchinson via her brother James Hutchinson who sold them to Nathaniel Leonard. My sense is that the slaves owned by William H. Hutchinson may have been bequeathed to him via his grandfather SOLOMON SPEARS and/or other relatives & purchases in Bourbon Co. This part of my research is daunting. A review of Boone Co., early estate records nearly blew my mind... the rental and sale of slaves and their children to family members and at auctions. I'm at a loss at the moment to tell you how unbelievable it all is... but if I could remind you all... who are researching MO ancestors, please keep your eyes peeled for slaves mentioned in your family records and help us [me and others] recreate what we can of our long lost families.
