Unknown Columbia, MO newspaper, Mar 1938 The sudden death of Mrs. J.L. McCommons, of near Ulman, Saturday afternoon came as a stunning shock to her many relatives and friends here and elsewhere. She apparently had been in fair health but was stricken early Saturday afternoon and passed away about 4:00 o'clock. In the absence of her husband, who was away at a distant farm at work in the fields, she managed to phone for aid from her daughter, Mrs. Wesley Clark of Ulman, who summoned a doctor and relatives here, but before they could all arrive she had passed peacefully away. Margaret Emily, daughter of Samuel and Phoebe Caroline Graham, early pioneer citizens of Miller County, was born near Brumley, MO, Feb. 9, 1872, the youngest of a family of seven children; passed away at her home near Ulman, March 12, 1938, being at the time of her death 66 years of age. She was united in marriage to John Louis McCommons of Ulman, Oct. 30 1887, and they were blessed with a family of eight children, who, with the husband, survive and are as follows: Mrs. Richard L. (Julia) Wright of Tuscumbia; Willard L. of Reinbeck, Iowa; Mrs. Wesley F. (Sadie) Clark of Ulman; Albert R. of Asheville, N. Carolina; Mrs. Dewey E. (Ina) Kallenbach of Tuscumbia; Mrs. Burleigh H. (Helen) Cantwell of Eldon; Mrs. Dorsey O. (Ruth) Barron of Tuscumbia, and John Glen of Philadelphia, Pa. Besides the children she is survived by seven grandchildren-Helen, Lorraine and Illys Lee McCommons of Des Moines, Iowa; Murray McCommons of Reinbeck, Iowa; Leahetta McCommons of Asheville, N. Carolina, and Patricia Wright and Marilyn Barron of Tuscumbia. She also leaves to mourn, one sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Cooper of near Ulman, besides a host of near relatives and friends. Mrs. McCommons united with the Brumley Baptist Church at the age of 14 years, later transferring her membership to the Ulman Baptist Church, and she continued steadfastly in the faith until the end. Mr. and Mrs. McCommons in early married life lived on their farm in the Bear Creek community near Brumley, where they worked and prospered, but later moved to their present home near Ulman where they continued to live until her death. She, by her faithfulness and integrity, contributed much to the well being of her husband and children, ever admonishing and teaching them in the right, and by her conscientious devotion she was rewarded by being permitted to live to see them all prosper and establish happy homes for themselves, and what more could a kindhearted Christian mother wish? She was a devoted Christian and attended church at every opportunity, never shirking the duty of serving her Master whenever duty called. She loved everyone, and it can truly be said that she went about doing good. Funeral services were held from the Ulman Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rv. Raymond Gilbreath, pastor of the Eldon Methodist Church and a dear friend of the family, and Rev. G. Omar Hickey, her former pastor, in charge. Song services were in charge of T.C. Wright of Tuscumbia, assisted by four women and three men, as follows: Mrs. T.C. Wright, Mrs. Curtis Barton, Miss Frances Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Brockman, and W.S. Stillwell and son Roger. Pallbearers were W.C. McClain, nephew of Mrs. McCommons, and her five sons=in=law, B.H. Cantwell, W.F. Clark, R.L. Wright, D.E. Kallenbach and D.O. Barron. Following the impressive funeral services, attended by a large crowd of sorrowing friends and relatives, the body was conveyed to Gott Cemetery where interment was made in the family lot, Phillips Funeral Home in charge. All the children and grandchildren were in attendance at the funeral.
