Many of the obits I get are in scrapbooks with BIG pages which would complicate/prohibit scanning. Additionally, many of them are faded, torn or nearly illegible. I tried scanning them to text but it was taking longer to proof and clean them up than it takes if I just type it straight out. Bottom line is I should have started doing this when I was twelve years old instead of waiting until I was 70. The indexes for obituaries from the Maries and Osage County papers are on my Gasconade Valley Cousins web-site; the URL is in my signature block. I use a scanner, scan the clipping into Microsoft Imaging as text and then copy it to a Micro Soft Word document. There two things to consider; sometimes there can be quite a bit of cleanup but its still faster than straight transcription and then when I paste them into an e-mail I lose the word document formatting. I think the formatting would remain when pasting them into a Rootsweb message but haven't tried that, at least that I remember. An alternative would be to scan them as a ,pdf file. The reasons I don't do that is sometimes the newsprint is bad enough that I lose words or get a big black blob; also I print them, along with birth announcements, anniversary announcements, etc. and file them by publication date by year in 3 ring binders for the Maries and Osage County Historical Society research rooms. Nancy:' Understand. Some of the most valuable obituaries to me that I have ever found were pasted in old magazines by a distant relative. That was before I and computers became friendly and I transcribed what I got from her by hand. Both she and her daughter are now gone and I just hope that someone has saved them. William L.
