First degree murder charges were filed against Everett Stark, 35 year old farmer living a few miles northeast of Iberia, on Wednesday evening of last week in connection with the slaying Sunday, June 21 of his neighbor, Everett Bilyeu, age 52. Following a coroner's inquest held at St. Elizabeth on Wednesday afternoon of last week, Stark plead innocence at his arraignment, claiming that he did the fatal shooting in self defense. He was returned to the Miller County jail at Tuscumbia after he had failed to post bond of $2,500. His preliminary hearing was set for July 3 before Justice of the Peace John Farrow. We understand that Mrs. Bilyeu, widow of the murdered man, filed the murder complaint against Stark. The charge followed closely an inquest into Bilyeu's death. The coroner's jury held that Bilyeu came to his death by a discharge from a shotgun fired by Starks. The shooting occurred on the Taylor Shelton farm, four miles northeast of Iberia, as the result of an ill feeling that had existed between the two farmers for some time. Sheriff Lafe King is quoted as saying that Stark remained unchanged in his story he shot Bilyeu in self defense. Stark was quoted by the sheriff when arrested Sunday, June 21, as saying he fired the fatal shot after Bilyeu charged him while they were ringing hogs on the Shelton farm. Mrs. Bilyeu, it is said, told the sheriff that Stark came to their home on Saturday and started trouble with her husband.
