I found this in the special 1975 edition of the Autogram-Sentinel. Information was compiled by Gwen Gunn Shoemaker and Grace Adams Farmer, Eldon, for The Miller Book. Although the desire was to name the county for William's son, Pinckney Miller, first male white child born in the area, it was felt the Legislature would be receptive to honoring a more widely known person so the petition asked that the new county be called Miller for former Gov.
