Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, December 11, 1952 Funeral services for Arthur James Haynes, Olean merchant who was fatally shot in a hunting accident last Thursday in Gasconade County, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Olean Baptist Church. The Rev. Glen M. Taylor, pastor of the church, was assisted by the Rev. A.L. Alexander, pastor of the Lake Ozark Christian Church. Interment was at Eldon Cemetery with Phillips Funeral Home service. Sheriff Ted Ruffner of Gasconade County said that Doylle Scott, around 30 years of age, of Fulton apparently fired the fatal shot. The bullet from a 300 Remington, went through Mr. Haynes' heart, killing him instantly, the sheriff said. A physician summoned from a nearby hunting camp, pronounced Mr. Haynes dead upon his arrival within a few minutes after the accident. Sheriff Ruffner termed the shot "mostly a sound shot." Mr. Scott told him that he said that he heard a noise and saw an object which he mistakenly supposed to be a deer, in thick cedars. Mr. Haynes was wearing plain hunting clothes over his dark red shirt. The fatal accident occurred at mid-afternoon on the opening day of Missouri's three-day dear season. Sheriff Ruffner said the accident scene was three miles north of Bay and a few yards off Brown Shanty Road. Mr. Haynes went to Osage County to spend the deer season with William Pointer who lives on a farm 10 miles from Linn. The two went into Gasconade County Thursday to see other hunting friends from the Eldon-Olean area, and spent the day driving about in Mr. Haynes' car in an effort to spot deer. At the time of the accident, Mr. Pointer said, Mr. Haynes had been out of the car only a short time. They had decided to make one drive for deer on foot before returning to the Pointer home. Mr. Pointer was separated from Mr. Haynes and did not now of the accident until other hunters told him. Mr. Haynes, well known central Missouri sportsman, has lived in Olean since 1909. He owned and operated Haynes Mercantile Co. there. For the past 25 years his wife, the former Stella Bealer of Eldon, has been associated with him in the operation of the store. Mr. Haynes, the son of the late Benjamin F. and Hannah J. Haynes, was born July 18, 1884, at the family farm southeast of Eldon. On May 7, 1908 he was married at Woodward, Ia., to Cassie Newell. They were the parents of three sons: Heaton, who has been associated with his father in the business at Olean since his return from World War II military service, and Gerald and Max of Kansas City. On July 7, 1927, Mr. Haynes was married to Miss Bealer at Sedalia. He was employed as a crane operator in the construction of the Rock Island railroad line through Eldon and later was engaged in the mercantile business in Eugene before purchasing the store in Olean with his brothers and brother-in-law. He has owned it alone since 1930. In early life he became a member of the Christian Church at Eugene. In addition to his widow of the home in Olean, and his three sons, Mr. Haynes is survived by a brother, Walter of Eldon; two sisters, Mrs. James W. McFarland of Eldon and Mrs. Alva Newell of Woodward, Ia., and six grandchildren: Joanne, Linda Ann, Johnny and Judy Haynes of Kansas City and Carrol Frank and Jimmy Haynes of Olean. Two brothers preceded him in death: Martin in infancy and Frank in 1935. Death Certificate gives his date of death as 4 Dec 1952
