Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, date unknown (handwritten "1961" on copy) John Thomas Pope, 87, a resident of Missouri for more than three-quarters of a century, died at 3:25 p.m. Friday at his home, 1102 S. Chestnut St., Eldon. He had been in failing health for two years. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Assembly of God Church in Eldon. Mr. Pope was born near Yellville, Ark., May 19, 1873, the son of the late Richard Martin and Sarah (Allen) Pope. He came from Arkansas to Missouri with his father in a covered wagon at the age of 10 years. On May 19, 1896, he was married to Sisley Ahart who preceded him in death in 1943. He was also preceded in death by twin sons who died in 1918 at the ages of 11 months and 13 months. Surviving are four sons, Johnnie Pope of Kansas City, Mo., Wesley and Loyd Pope of Kansas City, Kan., and Jimmy Pope of Valley Park; two daughters, Edna Tyler of Climax Springs and Oda Pankey of Kansas City, Kans.; 30 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; four half-sisters, and four half-brothers. One sister and three brothers preceded him in death. The Rev. Ed Boan officiated at the services Sunday. Burial was at Dooley Cemetery under the direction of Kays Funeral Home of Eldon. Pallbearers were Granville Purl, Oscar Watt, M.D. Denison, Tom Foust, Mike Simons and Dan Brown.
