Obituary: The New Iberian, October 5, 1978 William Austin Burks, 63, Tuscumbia, died Saturday, September 23, at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Administration Hospital, Columbia. He was born March 26, 1915, in Miller County, the son of John and Macie Fancher Burks. He was married October 4, 1943, at Jefferson City, to Ora Childers, who died in April 1959. The lifelong area resident was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Jackie Surface, Holts Summit; three sisters, Mrs. Jewel Long, Tuscumbia, Mrs. Virginia Wilson, Crocker and Mrs. Fern Huddleston, Lamont; two brothers, Hasten Burks and Malachi Burks, both of Tuscumbia; and two grandchildren. Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, September 25, at the Stevinson Funeral Home Chapel, Iberia, with Brother Floyd Barlow officiating. Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Tuscumbia, with the Iberia VFW holding military rites.
