Too bad. Hard to believe it's not worth bypassing it with a new bridge and leaving the swinging bridge for foot traffic for tourists. That is what I would do. Come to think of it, you guys better start doing that right now for those swinging bridges down from Wright Cemetery. Get the cars off of them now and you'll have something for the tourists. Don't want tourists - OK - your call, but I think that is a mistake. Mike Flannigan
I absolutely agree with you about these unrecognized treasures. Throughout my childhood my family used to camp near the Boeckman bridge, sometimes for more than a week at a time. The water was clear. The fishing was great. My parents loved coming home to Miller County at every opportunity to reconnect. It was no surprise when the bridge was put on the National Register of Historic Places. However, it was a great surprise when the decision makers chose to tear it down. Unfortunately it all comes down to money. The area around this bridge is very hilly and the road takes a sharp bend at the approach to the bridge. It would not have been a simple matter to put a new bridge along side the old and traffic didn't warrant all the imminent domain of good farm land in order to create a new approach. When the bridge was torn down my sister and I went down and retrieved a board--our way of clinging to this warm memory of our childhood. Kliethermes bridge is still standing but not accessible to traffic. It is in a poor shape and not safe to cross. The county court/commission closed it off a couple of years ago. It is very unique but very dangerous. There is not much traffic on these country roads where the bridges are located. Most of them span the Big Tavern creek which meanders across Miller County. The bridges that are still in use include Buechter bridge (south of St. Anthony), Kemna bridge (southeast of St. Elizabeth), Mill Creek bridge and Auglaize bridge (near Brumley in Glaize township)....the bridges that are no longer used include Boeckman (replaced with new bridge), Singer bridge, and Hoecker bridge (replaced with a new bridge)............
