Obituary: Uniknown Publication, April 1900 John Etter, a pioneer of Eldon, and a long time resident of Miller County, dropped dead just after eating at the home of his son, George Etter Monday noon. Mr. Etter had not been feeling well for a few days, but apparently was not suffering from any serious malady. About two years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke while unloading a dray wagon at the Eldon Bakery and was in a serious condition for several days. The attack Monday may have been a second stroke. Mr. Etter followed carpentering in Eldon for many years, some of the first houses built in the original town of Eldon were built by him and Jacob Gamphor. He was a man who would never quarrel except good naturedly. He did not believe in shaming or pretentions, always plain and outspoken in his views of what he considered right or wrong. John W. Etter was born Aug. 16, 1851 in Miller County. He was married to Mary J. Bond Oct. 3, 1873. Unto them were born eleven children, nine are living to mourn the loss of father, Mrs. Etter having died several years ago. The children living are Mrs. C.A. Houtz, Mrs. J.T. Loving, Mrs. W.M. Hackney, Mrs. H.M. Russell, Dan, George and Ross Etter. Mrs. E.E. Bridges and Miss Cirrelda Etter. Funeral services were conducted at the home Wednesday by Rev. F.M. Stickney. Interment in the Eldon Cemetery.
