Today, there are only six remaining and two of them can be found very near the small community of Brumley. Once popular hangouts in the summer, the two bridges are more than 75 years old and are in need of repair, but still an interesting landmark. About two miles from Brumley, on a gravel road now called Swinging Bridges Road (Lake Road 42-18) is the Auglaize Bridge and the Mill Creek Bridge. The Auglaize Bridge is the largest of the swinging bridges in Miller County. It was built in 1931 after the construction of the Bagnell Dam caused the waters of the Auglaize Creek to back up. It is 400 feet long. The Mill Creek Bridge, just a short distance away, spans a small waterway known to locals as Mill Creek. It is only 100 feet long, considerably smaller than its neighboring bridge. The two bridges are more commonly referred to by local residents as the Twin Bridges. Although both bridges are in dire need of repair, the thought of rebuilding either of them brings sadness to the people who grew up in the area. "My dad helped to build those bridges," said lifetime Brumley resident Lloyd Degraffenreid. "I was born in 1927 so I wasn't very old when those bridges were built. They used to be a real popular hangout for families in the summertime. People would go down there and have picnics, go swimming and camp-out." The Twin Bridges were designed and built by Joseph Dice, who constructed as many 40 swinging bridges throughout several Mid-Missouri counties, including Miller, Benton, Maries and Cooper. There is a Missouri State Park located next to the Auglaize Bridge, which is open to the public. If you plan to visit the swinging bridges, be sure to roll the windows down to get the "full effect." It will sound like you are crossing an old wood-frame roller coaster. The bridges are sturdy and will hold, but are open to local traffic only. Both the Auglaize Bridge and the Mill Creek Bridge are listed as historic bridges with the Historic Bridges of the United States organization. Mill Creek Bridge, one of the few swinging bridges left in Missouri, is still a popular attraction in the Brumley area. The Auglaize Bridge is located just a short distance down the road from this bridge. At that time, Brumley was one of the smallest towns in Miller County with a population of about 100. There were two general stores, two wagon and blacksmith shops, a drug store, a hotel, two churches, a school and a post office. Although it is clear that the town was laid out by J.M Hawkins, who also built the post office, it is unclear where the name Brumley originated. For 79-year-old Lloyd Degraffenreid, that's always been a mystery. “We never have figured out how that name came about,” he said. “There are some families around here with that name, but nobody really ever has been too sure how Brumley got the name. Guess it doesn't matter much, just would be interesting to know.” Except for a few years, Degraffenreid spent his entire life in Brumley. He is one of nine children. His father was a carpenter and a farmer. Of the nine children, Degraffenreid said most of them “scattered like flies” but he chose to stick around home. He met and married his wife, Veda, in Brumley 56 years ago and together they raised five children. Three children still live nearby. “I've lived here pretty much my whole life,” he said. “Brumley is home and that's how I like it.” As a child, Degraffenreid said he can recall when his hometown was a growing town with many businesses. “It's hard to believe it now, but we had five general stores at one time, a garage, a blacksmith shop, a feed mill and a couple of taverns,” he said. “Ted Stamper had the power plant that supplied the electricity to the town and we had a four year high school until about 1949.” Degraffenreid graduated from that high school in 1945. After the high school was consolidated with the School of the Osage in 1949, he said the elementary school lasted several years longer. Unsure of when the grade school closed, Degraffenreid said all of his children attended the school at one time or another. Incorporated in 1928, many things have changed about the small town of Brumley over the years, but the population has always stayed about the same. “People have moved away and other people move in,” Degraffenreid said. “But the population always stays somewhere between 90-110. That part doesn't seem to change too much. “The town itself is altogether a different place. I used to know nearly everyone around here but now I hardly know a soul. So many people have moved away, several have died and the new people move in and they're friendly, but I just don't know them.” However, he said if someone called him and said they wanted to move to his town, he'd gladly help them. “I'd say well, okay, I'll help you find a place.” Brumley is located in the southwestern portion of Miller County, 11 miles from Iberia and 10 miles from the Lake of the Ozarks.

I found this obituary on line. Is this the father of Alfred Mitchell Stickney? If so, what was his full name? I could find no burial information on him in the Eldon Cemetery list on the MOMiller site. Nancy T. Rev. R. M. Stickney passed away Friday Taken from Eldon Newspaper, February 6, 1919 The subject of this sketch was born on a farm near Woodville, Adams County, Ill., Oct. 5, 1844. His early life was spent on the farm and was full of struggles due to the fact that he lost his father by death as the age of six. He received such education as the public schools of Southern Illinois could afford as a time when the public schools of that border country were in their infancy. This was supplemented by two terms in a higher institute of learning. At nineteen years of age he was converted at an old time Methodist mourners bench. His experience was so clear that through a long life, while he had many troubles, one of them was not religious doubt. He knew Him whom he believed. At nineteen he joined the church and to the church he dedicated his life. This was at Barry, Polk County, Illinois. At the same time and place he met and wedded Maria Helvey viz Feb. 18, 1864. Had he lived to see the 18th day of February they would have walked life's devout way together 55 years. This is a remarkable record and few achieve it. To them were born 5 children, four sons and one daughter, Mrs. Lennie Hamilton, of Jasper, Mo. Of the sons all of them have preached the gospel and three of them viz: Rev. Edward Stickney, Dwight Kansas; Rev. A.M. Stickney, Grand Tower, Ill.; and Rev. Frank Stickney, Neely's Landing, Mo., are regularly engaged in the ministry and George Stickney of Eldon. Thus he being dead yet speaketh thru his sons. All his children, his wife, twenty-seven grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren survive him. He was licensed to preach in 1868 and for two years served as a supply preacher at Clinton, Mo. He was received on probation into the St. Louis conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church as it session held in Springfield, March 1870, Bishop Clark presiding. He was later ordained deacon and elder and he was sent to his first regular appointment at Dixon, Mo. where he remained four years. Then his appointments were Houston, Sullivan, Barnesville, Marble Hill, Calvary, again two years at Sullivan, Iberia, Linn Creek, and Eldon in which place he has since resided. He came to Eldon in 1893 and thus has been a citizen of the town 26 years. >From 1891 to 1901 he was a supermumerary preacher doing supply work in and around Eldon. Since 1901 he has been a superannuated preacher but was by no means idle in his retirement. His ministry has been to the whole community and has rendered incalculable service as he has gone about doing good, burying the dead, marrying the lovers and spreading good cheer and sunshine. He was every man's friend and he has made for himself a unique place in the life of the community. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and masonic lodges and was highly esteemed by the members of these fraternities. He was never a rugged man and many times his life despaired of but he lived on going about among us until about three weeks ago. He was then stricken with what was probably influenza. This passed off when he repeatedly contracted a cold and after two weeks of struggle with disease and pain he passed away on Jan. 31 at 1:15 a.m. aged 75 years, 2 months and 26 days. His mind and faith were clear to the end and he passed away most peacefully. The funeral services held Saturday, Feb. 1 were in charge of the pastor who dedicated a sermon to his memory using a text Acts 11:24 "For he was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith and much people were added to the Lord." A large congregation gathered witnessing the esteem in which Bro. Stickney was held. Both the Eastern Star and the Masonic lodges were present in a body. He was buried in the Eldon Cemetery with Masonic honors.
