He was born January 1, 1914 at St. Elizabeth, a son of John L. and Rosa Massman Bax. He was married Sept. 20, 1938 at St. Anthony, to Bertha Blomberg, who survives at the home. A retired farmer and heavy equipment operator, Mr. Bax was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, St. Elizabeth, Holy Name Sodality, Knights of Columbus 7132, and past president of St. Elizabeth Senior Citizens Center. Other survivors include: four sons, Harold Bax of St. Charles, Roger Bax of Mary's Home, Virgil Bax of St. Elizabeth, Bernard Bax of St. Peters; four daughters, Delphine Dickneite of St. Anthony, Marcella Kempker and Virginia Kemna, both of Jefferson City, Mary Sue Scheulen of Meta; three sisters, Martha Strope and Rosemary Buschjost, both of St. Thomas, Eleanor Schmeig of Creve Cour; 33 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 am Tuesday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A 1957 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School, he was a retired union carpenter. He was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral, Knights of Columbus and Carpenters Local 945. Other survivors include: one son, Steve Jurgensmeyer, Jefferson City; two daughters, Sheila Tannehill, Waverly, Ohio, and Stephanie Blankenship, Jefferson City; three stepsons, Doug Kempker, Eugene, Keith Kempker and Darrin Kempker, both of Jefferson City; one stepdaughter, Merideth Lehman, Jefferson City; four brothers, Donnie Jurgensmeyer, Virginia, Ronnie Jurgensmeyer, state of Florida, Bill Jurgensmeyer, Jefferson City, and Pat Jurgensmeyer, Illinois; two sisters, Janice Holtmeyer, St. Charles, and Susan Jurgensmeyer, Springfield; two grandchildren and two step grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Cathedral. The Rev. Daniel Merz and the Rev. Christopher L. Cordes will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Cemetery.
