Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, 1977 James Benjamin Hodge, 77, of Eldon, died Tuesday at Charles E. Still Hospital (Jefferson City). Mr. Hodge was born at Henley on Sept. 23, 1899, son of Linz and Minnie Wilson Hodge. He was married to Carrie Mae Hinds on March 7, 1920, at Sedalia. Survivors include: his wife of the home; six sons, James Hodge, Kansas City, Benny Hodge, Charley Hodge, Kenneth Hodge, Truman Hodge and Tommy Hodge, all of Eldon. Nine daughters, Mrs. Ruby Coons and Mrs. Delora Spencer, both of Independence, Mrs. Myrtle Eth, Warsaw, Mrs. Gloria Miller, Saginaw, Mich., Mrs. Mary Lou Demoss and Mrs. Ruth Lathrom, both of Kansas City, Mrs. Nellie Plemmons, Mrs. Linda Vaughan, and Miss Kathleen Hodge, all of Eldon; one sister, Mrs. Maude Jones, Denver, Colo.; 37 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hodge was a longtime resident of the Eugene community before moving to Eldon. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ninth Street Christian Church, Eldon, with Brother Craig Woolsey officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Garden Cemetery under the direction of Griswold-Kays Funeral Home, Eldon.
Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, October 1976 Robert Gerald Haynes, 59, Rte. 4, Eldon, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1976 at Boone County Hospital in Columbia. He had been hospitalized for three weeks. He was born Sept. 11, 1917, at Etterville to Graydon R. and Vida D. (Berry) Haynes. April 4, 1941, he was married at Tuscumbia to the former Ila Dawson, who survives. Mr. Haynes, a lifetime resident of the Etterville community, operated a farm. He also had worked for many years as a carpenter in the Jefferson City and Columbia areas. A year ago he joined the State Office of Design and Construction. He attended the Etterville Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, four sons, Robert Gene Haynes, Etterville, James D. Haynes, Kaiser and John M. Haynes and David Haynes, both of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Rebecca McDonald, Jefferson City; a brother, Ted Haynes, Eldon; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. The Rev. Chester Zarger officiated. Burial was in the Enloe Cemetery.
Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, unknown date (1966?) Funeral services were held Sunday for Mrs. Lula Binford White, 69, rural Eldon, who died last Wednesday at Latham Hospital in California. Mrs. White had been a patient in the hospital for 10 days after suffering a stroke. A retired school teacher and a noted antique collector, Mrs. White was born June 13, 1896, in Camden County, to Giles and Armina (Miller) Shelton. In 1921 she was married at Independence to A.R. (Roscoe) White, who preceded her in death. A member of the Barnett Christian Church, Mrs. White was a Sunday school teacher for several years. She was also a member of Barnett Chapter 303, Order of the Eastern Star, and past district deputy grand matron; White Shrine, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Bissell of Salinas, Calif.; two brothers, Clifford Shelton of Los Angeles, Calif., and Lemoyne Shelton of Eldon. The Rev. A.L. Alexander officiated at the services at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial was in Dooley Cemetery under direction of Kays Funeral Home of Eldon. Pallbearers were Emmett Dunstan, Emal Dunstan, Shirley Kidwell, Peter F. Cooper, Dick Werner, and Phil Morgan.
Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, December 11, 1952 Funeral services for Arthur James Haynes, Olean merchant who was fatally shot in a hunting accident last Thursday in Gasconade County, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Olean Baptist Church. The Rev. Glen M. Taylor, pastor of the church, was assisted by the Rev. A.L. Alexander, pastor of the Lake Ozark Christian Church. Interment was at Eldon Cemetery with Phillips Funeral Home service. Sheriff Ted Ruffner of Gasconade County said that Doylle Scott, around 30 years of age, of Fulton apparently fired the fatal shot. The bullet from a 300 Remington, went through Mr. Haynes' heart, killing him instantly, the sheriff said. A physician summoned from a nearby hunting camp, pronounced Mr. Haynes dead upon his arrival within a few minutes after the accident. Sheriff Ruffner termed the shot "mostly a sound shot." Mr. Scott told him that he said that he heard a noise and saw an object which he mistakenly supposed to be a deer, in thick cedars. Mr. Haynes was wearing plain hunting clothes over his dark red shirt. The fatal accident occurred at mid-afternoon on the opening day of Missouri's three-day dear season. Sheriff Ruffner said the accident scene was three miles north of Bay and a few yards off Brown Shanty Road. Mr. Haynes went to Osage County to spend the deer season with William Pointer who lives on a farm 10 miles from Linn. The two went into Gasconade County Thursday to see other hunting friends from the Eldon-Olean area, and spent the day driving about in Mr. Haynes' car in an effort to spot deer. At the time of the accident, Mr. Pointer said, Mr. Haynes had been out of the car only a short time. They had decided to make one drive for deer on foot before returning to the Pointer home. Mr. Pointer was separated from Mr. Haynes and did not now of the accident until other hunters told him. Mr. Haynes, well known central Missouri sportsman, has lived in Olean since 1909. He owned and operated Haynes Mercantile Co. there. For the past 25 years his wife, the former Stella Bealer of Eldon, has been associated with him in the operation of the store. Mr. Haynes, the son of the late Benjamin F. and Hannah J. Haynes, was born July 18, 1884, at the family farm southeast of Eldon. On May 7, 1908 he was married at Woodward, Ia., to Cassie Newell. They were the parents of three sons: Heaton, who has been associated with his father in the business at Olean since his return from World War II military service, and Gerald and Max of Kansas City. On July 7, 1927, Mr. Haynes was married to Miss Bealer at Sedalia. He was employed as a crane operator in the construction of the Rock Island railroad line through Eldon and later was engaged in the mercantile business in Eugene before purchasing the store in Olean with his brothers and brother-in-law. He has owned it alone since 1930. In early life he became a member of the Christian Church at Eugene. In addition to his widow of the home in Olean, and his three sons, Mr. Haynes is survived by a brother, Walter of Eldon; two sisters, Mrs. James W. McFarland of Eldon and Mrs. Alva Newell of Woodward, Ia., and six grandchildren: Joanne, Linda Ann, Johnny and Judy Haynes of Kansas City and Carrol Frank and Jimmy Haynes of Olean. Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, date unknown (handwritten "1961" on copy) John Thomas Pope, 87, a resident of Missouri for more than three-quarters of a century, died at 3:25 p.m. Friday at his home, 1102 S. Chestnut St., Eldon. He had been in failing health for two years. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Assembly of God Church in Eldon. Mr. Pope was born near Yellville, Ark., May 19, 1873, the son of the late Richard Martin and Sarah (Allen) Pope. He came from Arkansas to Missouri with his father in a covered wagon at the age of 10 years. On May 19, 1896, he was married to Sisley Ahart who preceded him in death in 1943. He was also preceded in death by twin sons who died in 1918 at the ages of 11 months and 13 months. Surviving are four sons, Johnnie Pope of Kansas City, Mo., Wesley and Loyd Pope of Kansas City, Kan., and Jimmy Pope of Valley Park; two daughters, Edna Tyler of Climax Springs and Oda Pankey of Kansas City, Kans.; 30 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; four half-sisters, and four half-brothers. One sister and three brothers preceded him in death. The Rev. Ed Boan officiated at the services Sunday. Burial was at Dooley Cemetery under the direction of Kays Funeral Home of Eldon. Pallbearers were Granville Purl, Oscar Watt, M.D. Denison, Tom Foust, Mike Simons and Dan Brown.
Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, unknown date Mrs. Myrtle Strong, 89, died at 8:45 p.m. Monday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Morgan of Barnett. She was born April 18, 1876 in Cole County to Andrew and Mary Jane (Amos) Porch, and spent her childhood in that county. She attended the school there and later attended Hooper Institute at Clarksburg. She was married to W. H. Strong who preceded her in death. Mrs. Strong, a longtime resident of Morgan County, was a member of the Barnett Christian Church; and was a charter member of Barnett Chapter 303 Order of the Eastern Star and Morgan County Historical Society. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marguerite Morgan of Barnett and Mrs. Lillian Zieff of Hollywood, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Routon of Eldon and Mrs. Georgia Roark of Edwardsville, Kan. One grandson, Bill Rehman, of California state; one great-granddaughter, Mrs. Judy Baker of Tacoma, Wash. and one great-great-granddaughter, Barbara Baker, also of Tacoma. The funeral was set for 2 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday) at the church in Barnett with Edsil Dale officiating. Burial at Hopewell under direction of Kays Funeral Home of Eldon.

Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, unknown date John Wright, honored and respected citizen of Eugene, passed away at his home Thursday morning at 10:00 o'clock of infirmities incident to old age. He was found lying on the floor, about an hour before he died, by William Spalding, a neighbor who had gone to his home to get an axe. Failing to get a response when he knocked on the door, Mr. Spalding looked inside the room and found him lying on the floor. He had a bruise on his face, and it is thought that he must have collapsed and fallen to the floor during the night preceding. Uncle John Wright was born near Tuscumbia on March 23rd, 1863, a son of James L. and Elizabeth Thompson Wright, and was 85 years, 10 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. He was united in marriage when a young man to Miss Lillie Ingram, who has been dead a number of years. They lived one half mile northwest of Tuscumbia for several years, then moved to the Dean's Creek neighborhood near Brumley, where they reared their family and where Mrs. Wright died. He had been living at Eugene about ten years. Mr. Wright was known throughout Miller and parts of Camden and Cole counties as an experienced painter and had perhaps done more house-painting than any other man in this county. He united with the Tuscumbia Christian Church years ago and later moved his membership to the Glover Chapel Church of Christ. He is survived by eight children and forty grandchildren. The children are: Garsy and James Wright of Eugene; Mrs. Carl (Annie) Willoughby and Mrs. Arlie (Nellie) Pemberton of Crescent; Mrs. Barney (Ruth) Wall of Iberia; Mrs. Walter (Goldie) Lucas of Webster Groves; Paul Wright of Crescent; and Mrs. Robert (Frances) Schwartz of St. Louis. He is also survived by one brother, G.L. Wright of Tuscumbia, who is now 86 years old. Funeral services were conducted at Glover Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Friday, by Rev. V.M. Smith of Brumley, and burial was in the church cemetery beside his wife.
Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, March 1955 Paul Otto Roberts, 59 of 831 Colorado Ave., a bus driver for Eldon R-1 District, died at his home at 4:30 p.m. Monday following a heart attack. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 18, at the Eugene Christian Church with the Rev. John Jenkins and the Rev. C.F. Sanner officiating. Interment will be in the Eugene Cemetery under the direction of the Phillips Funeral home in Eldon. Mr. Roberts was born April 26, 1896, at Eugene, the son of David and Hannah Miller Roberts, both of whom preceded him in death. He was married to the former Miss Lena E. Williams on April 20, 1921. He was a veteran of World War I during which he won the Purple Heart medal. He lived in this community until 1921 when he moved to Colorado then later to California. He returned to Eldon in 1948. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Brewster, Collinsville, Ill., and Mrs. Virginia Gilbert, Fresno, Calif., four sisters, Mrs. Cora Crane, Kansas City, Mrs. Lizzie Pierce, Eldon, Mrs. Ollie Ekstam, Eugene and Mrs. Suzie Albertson, Etterville, three brothers, H.L. Roberts, Eldon, James C. Roberts, Cole Springs, Colo., and R.F. Roberts, Barnett, two granddaughters and a grandson. Mr. Roberts was a member of the First Christian Church at Vallejo, Calif.
Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, unknown date Mrs. Maud Franklin Allee, wife of Dr. Warren Logan Allee and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James S. Franklin, died at her home in Eldon Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 16, after a lingering illness. She was born at Bagnell, Jan. 30, 1885, but moved to Eldon in early childhood when her father, J.S. Franklin and her uncle, R. S. Harvey, established the Harvey Mercantile Store. Mrs. Allee attended Eldon public schools before entering Christian College at Columbia where she graduated with the class of 1903. She was married in 1906 to Dr. Logan Allee, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. William Allee of Olean. Dr. W.S. Allee served in the Missouri Senate for three terms. Mrs. Allee, a resident of Eldon for the past 68 years, showed a civic-minded spirit by actively participating in local clubs and activities including her church, public library, Red Cross, Euterpean Club, PEO, Eastern Star, and Business and Professional Women's Club. She served as State Nursing Chairman of the Missouri Federation of Women's Clubs, State Chairman of the Phoebe J. Ess scholarship and as state treasurer for three years. She was president of the Women's Auxiliary to the Missouri State Medical Association in 1947-48, and served as State Chairman on the Board of the Auxiliary in other years. She was a member of the national Parlimentarian Association and filled the capacity of parliamentarian at the convention of the Women's Auxiliary to the Missouri Medical Association as well as for the PEO State Convention. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Warren Logan Allee, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. James W. Allee of Columbia, and their two children, Galt and Sidney Elizabeth; a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Hinz, and daughter, Nell Franklin of Leavenworth, Kan.; three sisters, Mrs. Lynn Gearheart, St. Petersburg, Fla., Mrs. Ellen Cuthbertson, Ithaca, N.Y., and Mrs. Otis E. Burris of Ponca City, Okla. Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, June 1949 Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Roy W. Starling, 50, prominent Eldon attorney, who died at his home here early Saturday morning, following an illness of nearly two years. Rev. Malcolm Younger conducted the services at the First Baptist Church of Eldon, and burial was made in the Eldon Cemetery under direction of Phillips Funeral Service. Starling was a widely known attorney and highly respected citizen of Miller County. He served as prosecuting attorney of this county from 1934-1939 and prior to that time was county superintendent of schools. While holding the latter office, he studied and obtained his license to practice law. Later he formed a law partnership with Harry Kay in Eldon, and continued in that partnership until his death. Starling served as city attorney of Eldon for many years, resigning in April of last year. His interest in public schools continued after his term as county school superintendent. Starling served on the Eldon School Board and was a member of the board of regents of Central Missouri State College until he was forced to resign because of ill health. He was always interested in civic affairs and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Lions, and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Eldon First Baptist Church and active in church affairs. Starling was the eldest son of Thomas and Mettie Starling and was born near Olean, Mo., August 26, 1898. His parents preceded him in death, his father having died when he was 19 years of age. His mother died in 1939. On November 22, 1930, he married Mary Brockman. They were parents of one daughter, Betty Nelle. Besides the mother and daughter, one brother, Golder G. Starling of Olean, Mo., survives. Starling attended public schools of Miller County and graduated from Eldon High School. He also attended Central Missouri State College and the University of Missouri. Pallbearers for the funeral service were John Walker, C.R. Hawkins, W.W. Harvey, Ralph Reed, Dr. E.O., Shelton, and Glenn F. Leslie. Out of town attorneys who attended the services were A.J. Bolinger, R.H. Wood, G. Logan Marr, and W.M. Bolea of Versailles; John Windsor and H. Martin Winters, Boonville; Frank Brady and Edwin Brady, Warsaw; Hugh Phillips and James T. Roach, Camdenton; John T. Martin, Sedalia; Judge James Hawkins, Buffalo; and W.S. Stillwell, C.D. Snodgrass, and Jack Stanton of Tuscumbia. Rev. D.W. Jones of Overland, Mo., former pastor of the Eldon Baptist Church, sang a special number at the service.

Miller of Eugene who died suddenly of a heart attack Friday night while visiting at the home of his brother, R.L. Miller, in Etterville. The Rev. John Jenkins officiated at the service and burial was in Spring Garden Cemetery under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon. Mr. Miller, the son of James Perry and Emma E. Miller, was born May 12, 1896 at the Miller homestead south of Eugene in Miller County. He had been employed since 1942 as a route solicitor for the News and Tribune of Jefferson City. Mr. Miller in his youth attended Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg, enlisting in the Marine Corps for World War I service during his junior year. He served in France. He was first teller in a Bristol, Okla. bank before entering the oil business. Later he worked for General Motors in St. Louis supervising an assembly line group. In addition to his mother who lives in Burbank, Calif., Mr. Miller is survived by three brothers: James C. Miller of Columbia; R.L. Miller of Etterville, and Claude Miller of El Dorado, Kans. and two sisters, Mrs. J.M. Crum of Leavenworth, Kans., and Mrs. F.A. Nefeler of Burbank, Calif.
Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, November 1960 Daniel Guy Henley, 78, died at 11 a.m. Sunday at his home, 605 N. Mill St., Eldon, where he lived with a brother and two sisters. Mr. Henley, who had been hospitalized at Humphreys Hospital, Tuscumbia, in late summer after suffering a heart attack, was suddenly stricken Sunday. He was a retired farmer. The Henleys moved to Eldon nine months ago after selling their farm in the Spring Valley Church area. He was born at Henley, Feb. 27, 1882, the son of Jasper and Josephine (Miller) Henley, and spent his childhood and attended school in Cole County. He was a member of the Spring Valley Baptist Church. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Jones of Jefferson City, and Miss Bessie Henley and Miss Elsie Hensley of the home, and one brother, Hugh Henley, of the home. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Spring Garden Church. The Rev. Cellis Crum officiated. Burial was in the Spring Garden Cemetery under the direction of Kays Funeral Home of Eldon.
Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, unknown date Jonathan Roberts, 90, one of Eugene's oldest citizens, died at his home thre Tuesday, January 20. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church last Thursday afternoon by Rev. A.L. Alexander. Burial was made in the Eugene Cemetery. Mr. Roberts was born in Ohio in 1857, and was the last member of a family of fourteen. A twin brother died in infancy. When a young man, he came to Miller County to visit his sister, Mrs. H. M. Sutton, whose husband was president and co-owner of the Miller County Institute at Spring Garden. Mr. Roberts bought an interest in the school and helped establish it as Miller County's first institution of higher learning. In 1889, Mr. Roberts married Rose V. Fisher and they were parents of two children. In 1906, the family moved to Eugene where Mr. Roberts became manager of the Eugene Mercantile Co. Mrs. Roberts died in October 1938. Mr. Roberts was a charter member and Elder in the Eugene Church. Besides the two children, Marjorie of the home, and Harley of Kansas City, he is survived by a foster-daughter, Mrs. Edna Hill of Smithton, and a grandchild, Sue Ann Roberts.
