    1. [MOMILLER] Ferguson family in 1851 census
    2. Paddy Buckley
    3. I have now managed to find the Ferguson family at the 1851 census for Scotland. Ancestry.com had indexed them as Forguson. There is a much better transcription of this part of the census, done by local voluntary enthusiasts. Go to www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes then search the 1851 indexes under Ferguson (usual spelling). William Ferguson, head, 33, b Mouswald DMS (Dumfriesshire) hand loom weaver Isabela Ferguson, wife, 31, b Dumfries DMS hand loom weaver John Ferguson, son, 10, b Torthorwald DMS, scholar Elisabeth Ferguson, dau, 8, b Torthorwald DMS, scholar Mary Ferguson, dau, 3, b Torthorwald DMS The family were living in Milligan Close, Maxwelltown, Troqueer Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Nowadays Maxwelltown is a suburb of Dumfries, but in 1851 it was a separate town on the west side of the River Nith which formed the county boundary between Dumfriesshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. It was immortalized by Robert Burns' song about Annie Laurie; "Maxwellton's braes are bonny." Mouswald and Torthorwald are small villages a few miles east of Dumfries. The family didn't move far. The whole area would have been hit by the potato blight 1845-49. The trade of hand-loom weaving (mainly for stockings) was on its last legs. When the Fergusons made the decision to emigrate they would have gone by boat from Dumfries Quay to Liverpool and thence to New Orleans. None of the births/baptisms of the children have been found on scotlandspeople.gov which does not include all the Presbyterian records, nor could I find the marriage of William Ferguson & Isabella. However I think I may have found their birth/ baptism records. William Ferguson was born at the Banks of Mouswald on Jun 19 1816 and baptized on Jun 23 1816 son of George Ferguson & Martha ?Ihir. Isobella Hunter was b May 17 1818 at Tynron, Dumfries dau of James Hunter & Jean Crichton. Paddy

    1. [MOMILLER] Colonel Cutts Passenger List 1855
    2. Paddy Buckley
    3. When I first looked on Ancestry.com for the Ferguson family on the Colonel Cutts I clicked on the transcript record for William Furgueson, which gave his name, age and date of arrival at New Orleans on Dec 3 1855. I then opened the original image which took me to page 3 of the manifest and there found the rest of the Furgueson family; Wm 40 farmer; Isabella 32 housekeeper; John 15 lab; Elizabeth 12; Martha 3. As I work on a 20 inch monitor, I thought I had all the information in front of me. However there was a small niggle of doubt. I went back to the start of the manifest: "List of all passengers taken on board the ship Colonel Cutts whereof Thomas (?O'Neill?) is Ship Master at the Port of Liverpool and bound for New Orleans". There is no date on the manifest image; the arrival date of Dec 3 1855 comes with the transcribed data. At the far right of the manifest (and well out of sight on the monitor) the last column is headed "Number that have died on the Passage". There were three such names out of 226 passengers. One was Wm Furgueson who died Nov 20th. I apologize for yesterday's incomplete postings to the list on this matter and hope that this will now resolve any doubts. Paddy

    3. Jim I had already seen the accepted story on RootsWeb World Connect that John Hunter Ferguson's father had died at sea "in 1859" on the voyage to USA, but the evidence from the Colonel Cutts passenger list of 1855 shows that William landed in New Orleans. I am aware of the marriage between John Hunter Ferguson and Dorcas Cansada Shelton on Jun 4 1862 in Miller Co and I'm sure that you will have all the Shelton links, and perhaps the stories handed down. 3. Thanks for this clarification. He was my great-grandfather. I had never checked the passenger lists and a cousin was under the impression that the youngest daughter may have been born in this country. This information shows she was not. There has also been some speculation that Squire John may have fibbed about his age in order to obtain employment after arriving here since support of the family would have fallen to him after his father died at sea. Squire John has had lots written about him--he was a shameless self-promoter as well as a significant mover and shaker in Miller County up to and following the Civil War.
