DeVere will be missed by all of us. In the past, he helped me many times with my research, and I am grateful for that. He seemed to always have an answer or a suggestion for me. Oh My!...So sorry to hear this sad news. I have wondered over the last few months about DeVere...and have so missed his clever quips and comments. A very special person... friendly, kind, AND what a great sense of humor! I loved to hear his stories and historical accounts, told in his own .... funny and charming way of putting things. Always eager to help us "novices" with our questions about Miller County and its people....I truly appreciated his efforts ...and more than that, I appreciate the truly fine person! Bob, I have seen this book at the MO State Archives. It includes name, date of newspaper, name of newspaper, and date of death. Then, you have to contact the State Historical Society in Columbia, MO or contact the Thomas Jefferson Library, Jefferson City, MO to get a copy of the obit. I don't know why it is volume 2, as I have never seen Volume 1. If you will give me the name you are looking for, I can see if it is in the book. DeVere died from heart failure. I talked with his cousin in Iberia tonight and they had been in contact with his widow. She said DeVere had spent some time in a hospital but was released to come home just a day or two ago. Last night he had the heart attack. No one realized just how sick he actually was.......His funeral services will be held at the church where he and his family attended in Lonedell, MO. The church is the Oak Grove Baptist Church with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. At 7 p.m. there will be a memorial service at the church. He is to be cremated with burial at a later date. Anyone wanting to send his wife a card or note, the address is: 4091 Hwy. 30 Lonedell, MO 63060 Peggy Hake ----- Original Message ----- From: <EllieSS@aol.com> To: <momaries@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 13, 2007 7:28 PM Subject: Re: [MOMARIES] DeVere Whitaker In a message dated 4/13/2007 5:16:01 P.M. Peggy, Thank you for letting us all know. I have been wondering for some time what has happened to DeVere and should have asked. Shame on me. The last I knew was that his wife was ill and that has been some time ago. He had some great stories to share about my Jones tree and branches. Thanks Nancy, I have looked in Union Co Illinois as that is where all the Carters were without any success. I can not believe that she would have left her mother and siblings unless she married and moved away. I can not find a marriage record for her. James W. Shelton's pension record was full of affadavits from family and neighbors but she was not among them. I am beginning to believe that she died. -----Original Message----- From: beatku@mchsi.com To: momiller@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, 13 Apr 2007 8:52 AM Subject: Re: [MOMILLER] Isabella Carter This from a Steen family book written by Sandra Sue Steen Cates: "James Hagges (Hodge) Steen married Nancy Jane Beggs about 1843.
