The Iberia Sentinel, February 1923 What seemed to be the saddest and most heart rending shock that ever visited this community occurred at Fairview Church north of Iberia last Saturday afternoon, when Mrs. Stella Setser, wife of Collector C.C. Setser, died while the funeral sermon was being preached by Rev. C.M. Sooter over the body of her daughter who had passed away at their home in Tuscumbia on Friday morning of tuberculosis from which she had been suffering for some time. Mrs. Setser had been as well as usual, but a severe attack of the flu a few years ago had left her with a weak heart, and the grief over the death of her daughter rendered her condition somewhat alarming. Realizing her condition her husband advised her to stay at home and not attend the funeral, but, like any devoted mother, she insisted on coming and the family finally consented. On the way over from Tuscumbia she experienced several sinking spells and at the Brumley place the funeral procession was stopped and Dr. von Gremp of this place was called to meet them at the church when they arrived. On the arrival at the church, Dr. von Gremp at once saw that Mrs. Setser's condition was serious and administered a stimulant hoping that it might strengthen her so that she could resist the shock. But before the minister had proceeded far with his sermon, her condition grew worse and she was removed from the building and placed in a car where she could get more fresh air. She only lived a few minutes after being placed in the car. Her daughter, Mrs. James Spearman, and her brother, Petty Musick, both of whom have also been left with weak hearts from the effects of the flu, were so effected by the shock that their condition became alarming, and for some time it took heroic work on the part of the physician and friends to relieve the tense situation. The funeral services were brought to a close as soon as possible and the bodies of both Mrs. Setser and her daughter were brought on to Iberia and held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Adams until Sunday afternoon when they were conveyed to the Livingston Cemetery, three miles northwest of Iberia, and both bodies interred in the same grave in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Mrs. Setser held an insurance policy in the Springfield Mutual amounting to about $425, and her daughter, Lura, $1,000 in the Metropolitan. Obituary Mrs. C.C. Setser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Musick, was born in Miller County July 26, 1879; died Feb. 10, 1923, being 43 years, 6 months and 14 days old at her death. She was a devoted Christian woman, being at the time of her death a member of the Christian Church. (Lengthy sermon message omitted from this transcription). The deceased leaves to mourn her departure a husband, one son and two daughters, namely: Johnny, Sarah and Mrs. James Spearman. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. H.A. Cotton, of Warrensburg, Ill., three sisters-Mrs. Charley Thompson of St. Louis, Mrs. Bennett Steen of Camden County, and the youngest sister, Electa, of Chicago, also a brother, Perry Musick of East St. Louis.

The Iberia Sentinel, February 1925 Charles Helton, son of Isaac Helton (deceased), was born June 15, 1870, in Maries County, Mo., on the Little Maries Creek. Died February 10, 1925, age 55 years, 7 months and 25 days. He was united in marriage to Lona Finn February 14, 1891, and to this union one child was born, Charles Elmer. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, son and three grandchildren. A large crowd attended the funeral exercises which were conducted by Rev. Fred Ricker, at the Stokes Cemetery. He was a member of the Christian (Newlight) Church at Little Tavern Church. He was a good husband, kind father, and good neighbor-honest and truthful and respected by everyone.
The Iberia Sentinel, February 1923 Miss Lura Setser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Setser, was born July 3, 1896; died at the home of her parents in Tuscumbia Friday, Feb. 9, 1923. Miss Setser contracted tuberculosis a year or so ago and shortly afterwards was compelled to give up her clerical work in the court house at Tuscumbia, where she assisted her father in the Collector's office, and for some time was assistant county clerk. She established a reputation for efficient service rendered while working in this capacity. Prior to her parents moving to Tuscumbia, she was one of the Southside's successful school teachers, having taught two terms in the Iberia Public schools and a number of years in the rural districts. She was a kind, loving daughter, and her devotion to the family circle had no limit. She was also a member of the Christian Church and her life was one worthy of emulation. Well may those dear to her cherish her memory as a precious legacy and we fain would say a word of comfort to the grief stricken ones we can but let our tears flow in sympathy with theirs, and point them to the promise, "At eventide it shall be light."
The Iberia Sentinel, October 1922 Monday morning about 10:30, while adjusting something about a gasoline engine which was furnishing power to operate a well drill at Willie Farnham's new residence property in south Iberia, Sam Jarrett, seventeen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jarrett, living about three miles west of town, was caught in the fly wheel of the engine and fatally injured. He was picked up lifeless, placed on a cot and rushed to the home of his uncle, George Jarrett, where his injuries were dressed by Drs. von Gremp and Duncan. On examination he was found to have suffered a fractured skull, broken jaw bone and other serious injuries about the face and forehead. He died about 7:30 p.m. without regaining conscience. Funeral services conducted by Rev. C.M. Sooter, were held Tuesday afternoon in the Fairview Church three miles north of Iberia, after which interment was made in the Jarrett Cemetery. The entire community joins in extending condolence to the bereaved family in this their hour of deepest sorrow.

Death Certificate: Charles Edward Thomas, single, for 25 years merchant & barber of Glaze, Miller Mo; died at 2.20 pm on Dec 24 1932 from disease of cornary arteries, angina pectoris, aortic stenosis (investigated by coroner). He was born Sept 16 1875 in Camden Co Mo, son of William R Thomas from Wales & Katherine Chansellor. He was buried on Dec 25 1932 at Pleasant Hill, Iberia. Informant was Mrs Jack Keeth of Iberia. Who was informant Mrs Jack Keeth? If she was the wife of Andrew Jackson Keeth, then she was Mary J, the (only?) daughter of William R Thomas & Elizabeth. There is no evidence in any of the census returns that William R Thomas was born in Wales or that he had a wife called Katherine Chancellor. On Nov 22 1896 in Miller County he married Lucinda Long nee Lucinda Frances Keeth b Mar 22 1844 and presumably beyond child-bearing age at her second marriage. So how did Charley come by 2 half brothers and a half sister as mentioned in the obituary below? Lastly could someone confirm the death date for William R Thomas as Nov 20 1904 in Miller Co? The Iberia Sentinel, January 1933 Mrs. Ellen Osborn, formerly of Iberia, died at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Short, in Edinburg, Texas, January 3, following a long illness. The body, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Short, was shipped back to Iberia, for burial, arriving here Friday evening. Funeral services were held here in the home of her nephew, M.J. Davidson, Saturday afternoon, conducted by her old friend and former pastor, R.B. Carnett of Lebanon, Mo., after which the body was laid to rest in the Iberia Cemetery by the side of her husband who preceded her a number of years ago. Adams & Casey, local funeral directors, had charge of the services. Ellen Hopkins was born November 7, 1850, near Washington, Indiana; died January 3, 1933, in Edinburg, Texas. She was united in marriage to G.A. Osborn, August 18, 1868, in Indiana. To this union were born seven children, four of whom with her husband preceded her in death. Those living are A.L. Osborn, Bristow, Okla.; J.L. Osborn, Pampa, Texas; and Mrs. Elmer Short of Edinburg, Texas. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. J.L. Irwin of Iberia, Mo., and two brothers, John L. Hopkins, Iberia, Mo., and Daniel Hopkins, Washington, Indiana. Her sister, Mrs. Electa Davidson, passed away only a few weeks ago. She was 82 years, one month and 27 days old. Soon after her marriage she was converted and united with the Baptist Church at Mt. Olive, Indiana. Coming to Missouri some years later, she with her husband and children lived in Columbia, Tuscumbia and Iberia, where she transferred her membership to the Baptist at the latter place where for may years she was a faithful and loyal member. She was a true wife and mother, and above all a true Christian woman whose Christian dignity was greatly admired by her many friends.
The Iberia Sentinel, February 1932 Mrs. Julia A. Brown was born in Windham, N.Y., February 22, 1844, and died in Iberia, February 3, 1932, being 87 years, 11 months and 12 days old. She was a daughter of David C. and Catherine Fancher and accompanied them to Missouri before the Civil War and settled in Miller County near old St. Elizabeth on the Osage River, later removing to Tuscumbia during the war for greater safety. She was united in marriage to John D. Brown, December 23, 1868, and lived in or near Iberia thereafter and has probably resided in the town longer than anyone else now living. She was a member of the Iberia Baptist Church many years. She is survived by five children, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Belle Thompson, Mrs. Eugenie Brown, Roy and Charles of Iberia and Walter of Joplin. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Alice C. Moore of Eureka, Mo.; one half sister, Miss Bertha Fancher of Iberia, and one half brother, Charles Fancher of Katawa, Kentucky. Funeral services conducted by Dr. G. Byron Smith were held from the home Friday morning after which interment was made in the Iberia Cemetery by the side of her husband who passed away several years ago.

The Iberia Sentinel, December 1932 Frank Mackney, brother of Mrs. C.L. Groff and Mrs. Anna Groff of this place, died at the Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, Monday of pneumonia fever which developed from the removing of his tonsils a few days ago. The body was brought to Iberia Tuesday night by Frank Adams and F.C. Ferguson, in the Adams & Casey funeral coach, and burial was made in a cemetery near the old Mackney place between Crocker and Hawkeye. Mr. Mackney had visited here quite often in the homes of his sisters during the past few years and was well known by many of our people. OBITUARY Frank Howell Mackney was born November 28, 1858, at Libertyville, Ill., and died Monday, December 26, 1932, of pneumonia following a tonsil operation at the Deaconess Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., being at that time 74 years and 28 days of age. He was united in marriage to Miss Estella Sterling to which union six children were born, five of whom are still living, namely: Lloyd R. of New York City, Earl A. of Knoxville, Iowa, Cecil C. of St. Louis, Mrs. Lena Strawhun of St. Louis and Sterling L. of Davenport, Iowa, the two youngest being present at the funeral. He is also survived by five sisters and two brothers namely: Mrs. Emma Felts, Mt. Pulaski, Ill.; Mrs. Jennie E. Bomberger, Checottah, Okla.; Mrs. Adah Holms, Randolph, S. Dak., Mrs. C.L. and Mrs. Anna Groff, Iberia, Mo., David E. and Harry H. Mackney, Crocker, Mo. The deceased formerly resided at Newburg where he was an employee of the Frisco Railroad for many years but more recently had been spending his time among his children. He was well known and highly respected and the bereaved ones have the sympathy of a host of friends. The body was brought to Iberia Tuesday evening and taken to the home of his niece, Mrs. Frank Ferguson, and the funeral was conducted Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Church west of Crocker by Rev. H.C. Green, pastor of the Methodist Church at Waynesville, after which the body was laid to rest in the cemetery nearby under the direction of Adams & Casey funeral directors of Iberia.
I don't have a date for this obituary but based on the others in the group, I would guess this is some time around 1932-1933. The Iberia Sentinel, December (year unknown) Word reached relatives here last Saturday that Willliam C. Adams of Lovelock, Nevada died of tuberculosis December 28. He had been engaged in mining for a number of years, but due to failing health, was compelled to give up the occupation some time ago. Mr. Adams was born near Iberia and spent his boyhood days here. He left here for the west when a young man, about 34 years ago, and never returned. He is survived by two brothers and three sisters, namely: G.W. Adams, J.D. Adams, Mary Mace and Mrs. Rosa Farnham of Iberia, and Mrs. Martha Shelton of Oklahoma.
The Iberia Sentinel, December 1932 Charles Edward Thomas, a well known resident of south Miller County, died rather sudden of heart trouble last Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bass, in Ulman, with whom he was making his home. Mr. Thomas was a barber by trade and was conducting the shop owned by Mr. Bass. He had been well as usual, having shaved a customer just a few minutes before he suffered the fatal attack. Mr. Thomas had been a cripple practically all of his life and never was able to do much manual labor. For a number of years, during the lifetime of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Wall, he conducted the Wall store at Faith, and since their death he has been working for Mr. Bass in the barber shop. He is survived by his brother, A.A. Thomas, and sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Keeth of near Luttrell's Store west of Iberia. He also leaves to mourn his death, two half brothers, Neal Thomas of Deepwater, Mo., and George Thomas of Clinton, Mo., and a half sister, Mrs. Nancy Ahart of near Bolivar, Mo. His father was William R. Thomas who died many years ago. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Virgil Smith from the Ulman Christian Church and interment was made in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Monday under direction of G.W. Adams, senior member of the Adams & Casey undertaking firm of Iberia.
I just received the following from another cousin and researcher, Ethel Hartman. Have been following the discussion on Cora Burks. I researched this quite a bit and offer the following: Anna Licora Burks was born Oct 15, 1885 in Miller County. Most records just list her as Cora. Her parents were William Hasten Burks and Mary Agnes Agnew. She married Chancy (Chauncy) Lorenzo Reinhart in Miller County. They married on Christmas day Dec. 25, 1904. Cora died March 26, 1914 and is buried in Mt Zion Cem in Miller County. I know that John's Aunt Pearl Burks Richardson said she died of TB a year or so before John's Grandmother Livonia Albertson Burks died of the same illness. They had 3 daughters: Ada was born Oct 7, 1905. Married a Moreland then a Roark Died Feb 19, 1985. Zula was born Aug. 17, 1907. Married Milton Heberle. Died May 18, 1985. Alma was born Feb 18, 1909. She married a Coots. She died 8 March 2002. Chauncy married second Mrs. Margaret Williams. They lived in Tebbetts in Cole County, I believe. I have an obit for Chauncy somewhere, but do not have it available just now. If you want to share any of this, feel free to do so. In a message dated 9/5/2008 6:22:44 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I too considered that Anna E. ? might be Anna Cora Burks. It would be logical for him to be buried with his first wife. However Anna E. ? whose tombstone is on the MoMiller cemetery list was b. 15 Oct 1891 and d. 25 Mar 1911. The death certificate for Anna Cora Burks says she was b. 15 Oct 1885 and d. 26 Mar 1914--nowhere close. It may be that the dates on the cemetery list were transcribed in error. It would probably require a trip to Mt. Zion to verify. This fits with what I have. I believe the Anna E. ? listing on MoMiller has faulty information. This is most certainly Anna Cora, and Chancy Loranzo Reinhart had only 2 wives. Thank you for this clarification. I've wrestling with this all day. Time to move on! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Friday, September 05, 2008 2:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOMILLER] Burks/Denton - death notice I just received the following from another cousin and researcher, Ethel Hartman.
