    1. Re: [MOMILLER] Musick/Setser - obituary

    3. These came from someone's scrapbook and there were two separate articles. They appeared side by side. The part about the insurance was tacked to the end of the first article as I have typed it. It was separated from the news article by a short line in the center of the page. The obituary article appeared with just her name as a caption, "Mrs. C.C. Setser" -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Susan Gillan Sent: Sunday, September 14, 2008 9:21 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOMILLER] Musick/Setser - obituary Was the amount of insurance reported in an obit or a news story? 3. Thank you Carmen for this excellent research. One question (and this ties in with Nancy's assertion that Cornelius William Thomas was a brother to William R. Thomas) Who was the father of Cornelius William Thomas b 1843? You have him as John 1. Do you have any more details? 1. [MOMILLER] Wyrick/Adcock - obituary
    2. Nancy Thompson
    3. Unknown Publication, March 1918 Lizzie Augusta Adcock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Caloway Wyrick, was born April 31, 1884, died March 19, 1918, age 34 years, 11 months, 11 days. She was united in marriage to Ira Adcock Sept. 1900; to this union were born 10 children, 7 boys Calvin, Ralph, Arley, Stanley, William and Homer. Girls: Effie and Verry. Calvin, the oldest boy and two infant girls preceded her to the spirit land. She confessed faith in Christ, united with the Christian Church on the morning of March 19th and died in the evening of the same day. Lizzie was born and raised near Tuscumbia, Miller Co. Mo., where she has a great many relatives and friends. She had the reputation in the neighborhood I which she lived and died as being a good neighbor and tender hearted woman. Some 3 or 4 years ago she became afflicted with lung trouble, lost her health, received treatment but all efforts failed. And in the evening of the 19th she quietly and peacefully passed out without a struggle. Before she died she called for her children; the relatives presented the little group of 7; she gave them a mother's last farewell look. These poor little children have no mother now. Their dear mother went away. (balance of sentiments omitted here) Among those left to mourn her loss is the husband, children, father and four sisters, Elvia Crismon, Melvia Lawson, Engie Weitz, Sarah Thompson, and Joseph, a brother. The funeral was conducted by the writer at the Mt. Zion Church in the presence of a very large congregation who had gathered there to pay their last tribute of respect, so justly due the departed. (sermon portion of obituary omitted here). Without acting on the advice of any one the writer called for a freewill offering. The good people willingly responded to the call by contributing $22.79, this amount was turned over to Ira and the children.. The body was laid to rest in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. -C.M. Sooter

    3. That's right Peg. But there were two men called Cornelius Thomas, and it would seem that both may have been known as Neal. Only one though was 'Uncle Neal'. He was the older. Here is his obituary. Obituary: Iberia Sentinel, May 1919 ANOTHER OLD SOLDIER PASSES AWAY C. W. (Uncle Neal) Thomas, another one of the few remaining old soldiers and for many years a resident of Iberia died Thursday night, April 24, 1919, at the Soldiers Home in St. James, Mo., where he and Mrs. Thomas had gone to make their home. The body was shipped back here for burial. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon by Rev. W. C. Miller of the Iberia M. E. church of which the deceased was a member. Interment was in the town cemetery. (Iberia). Mr. Thomas had been in failing health for several years prior to his death. He leaves an aged companion and a number of children, all of whom are married and well known by our people. Mrs. Thomas went to Springfield Monday to spend a short time with her daughter, Mrs.Clarence Madden. She will make her home most of the time with her children and will probably spend some of her time at the soldiers. home. His death certificate reveals that he was born on April 5th 1843. There is no named informant on the certificate. The details had been taken from the record at the Soldiers Home which did not name his parents, or where they were from. At the 1870 census for Osage, Camden Co Mo; Cornelius Thomas 27 farmer b Illinois; (wife) Caroline 26 b Mo; William 4; John E 2; Malinda 9. The next schedule is that of William (R) Thomas 35 farm laborer b Mo; with children George 10; Sarah A 8; Cornela 2. The proximity of the two men implies a relationship although their different origins does raise a doubt. As Nancy points out (below): Ambrose A. Thomas' obituary names a half brother, Neal Thomas, of Deepwater, MO. The connection with Deepwater suggests to me that this Neal was the younger Cornelius W Thomas b 1868 who married Delilah Jane Stone on Aug 7 1887 in Miller Co. I have not yet found a death certificate or obituary for this Cornelius, but his wife Delilah died in Deepwater on Mar 8 1954. The informant on her death certificate was Wayne Thomas, her grandson who had lived with them for many years. The obituary for Charles Edward Thomas (1932) named Neal Thomas as his half brother, showing that Cornelius W b 1868, and Charles Edward b 1875 had different mothers. Eventually we may be certain of their identities. Peg In a message dated 9/9/2008 2:18:53 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I would be interested in the names of the 3 children born to Catherine Cansler and Marion Boone. I found a death certificate for Martha Ellen Boone Horn b. 1866 d 1932. She lists her father as Marion Boone and mother as Katheryn Cansler. So I would say Catherine was not married to William R. Thomas until after 1866. Since their first child, Mary Jane was born in June 1872, I would say William R. Thomas was married to Catherine Cansler sometime between 1868 and 1871. I have no information on three children, George Thomas b. 1860, Sarah A. Thomas b. 1861, Cornelius W. Thomas b. 1868, but they could not belong to Catherine Cansler since she was still married to Marion Francis Boone in 1866 (see Martha Ellen Boone Horn above). William R. Thomas married Lucinda Francis Keeth (her second marriage) 22 Nov 1896. Ambrose A. Thomas' obituary names a half brother, Neal Thomas, of Deepwater, MO. Charles Edward Thomas' obituary names two half brothers, Neal and George Thomas and a half sister, Nancy Ahart. Who are the parents of these siblings? Nancy T.

Her brother Charles Edward was born three years later in 1875. If the mother of Charles Edward was claimed to be Katherine Chansellor then she was also the mother of Mary J and she ought to have known about her father's wife/wives. Going through the MOMILLER Archives I can see that Willard McDowell is of the same opinion. "William R Thomas was indeed married to Catherine Cansler Boone, (my gg grandma), I believe his first wife." Can we put a date for this first marriage? According to Willard, Catherine Cansler was born about 1839/1840, and that before she married William R Thomas she had earlier married Marion Francis Boone with whom she had three children. At the 1850 Census for District 13 Camden Co Mo; Harry Thomas, 17; William Thomas 15; George Thomas 12; John Thomas 10; Cornelius Thomas 3; Eliza Thomas 1; all b Mo and all enumerated with Samuel Brooks 67 b Va & Elizabeth Brooks 42 b Ohio. At 1860 Census for Osage, Camden Co Mo; William R Thomas, 23, Laborer, b Mo; Elizabeth, 19, b Mo; George W, 3/12, b Mo; John W Thomas, 20, Laborer, b Mo. At this census relationships were not stated, but because of the presence of a 3 months old child, we may presume that Elizabeth 19 b Mo was the wife of William R Thomas. Then William R got caught up in the Civil War. In the 1895 Veterans Schedule for Jasper, Camden Co Mo: Thomas, William R. Pvt B Coy Osage HG Jul 12, 1861 - Dec 20, 1861 service 5 mo 8 days. Leg mashed.; re-enlisted. Cpl 3 MO Cav; Oct 10, 1862 - Jun 14, 1865; Service 2y 9m 4d. At 1870 Census for Osage, Camden Co Mo: William Thomas 35 farm lab; George 10; Sarah A 8; Cornela 2. All b Mo. No sign of a wife, and the 3 months baby in 1860 is now George age 10. Cornela age 2 was enumerated as a female, but my hunch is that this was Cornelius. At 1880 census for Jackson, Camden Co Mo; W.R Thomas 49 b Mo ? ?; wife Elizabeth 48 b La (or Iowa) Tn Ny; son Cornelious 12; Mary J 8; Charles E 6; Ambers A 3. This Elizabeth was born in about 1832 and not in Missouri. The Elizabeth of 1860 was born about 1841 in Missouri.
