    1. [MOMERCER-L] re: Obits from "Grandma Taylor's Book"

    3. These are obituaries from the above-named book. This is my yard sale treasure. "DIED Near Pueblo, Colorado, Dec. 23rd, 1887, of paralysis, James Schoonover, aged 89 years. "The deceased was the father of H. R. Schoonover, of Mercer Co., and had only a few weeks before his death, in company with his aged wife, went to Colorado to visit a daughter. He had been in more than usual good health until a day or two before his death when he was suddenly stricken with paralysis and after lapsing into unconsciousness gradually and quietly passed away like a child sinking into a peaceful sleep. He was born near New Albany, Penn., Jan. 14th, 1799, and moved to Southern Indiana at the age of 24, where at the age of 35 he was married to Miss Hannah C. Bates, who still survives him. With his wife and family he emigrated to Mercer Co., Mo., in 1856, and settling on land near Sommersett, remained there until the year of his death. He became a member of the Christian Church in the years of his early manhood and throughout his long life was a sober, temperate, Christin man, respected and esteemed by all who knew him---Lineville Tribune." The next item reads: "Obituary. Ella M. Girdner was born Nov. 7, 1867 and died January 21, 1888. "Ella never joined any Church organization but we trust when life sunk apace, and death was in view, the word of His grace did support and comfort her. She was an affectionate daughter. Ella was stricken down at the very threshold of womanhood, by that awful disease consumption. She leaves father, mother and nine brothers and sisters, a large circle of friends to mourn her loss, and the people at Marion (we know this now as Mercer--JV) and Lineville feel that they have lost one of their purest and best young girls, and we trust, with the song of heaven on her lips, she passed peacefully into the presence of God and eternal life." The last obituary I'm copying today contains no dates, but may be helpful to someone anyway. "Miss Allie Stewart, daughter of Rev. Geo. W. Stewart, of near Cainsville, died last Thursday of typhoid fever. She was engaged in school teaching near Spickardsville and her term was nearly completed when she died. She was well known and highly respected in this locality and her many friends will be grieved to learn of her death." Jennie Vertrees backwood@grm.net
