BURNS FATAL TO MILL GROVE FARMER Waler Powell Dies at Hospital From Burns Received When Clothing Cathches Fire Walter Powell living about a mile north of Mill Grove on the Mrs. Croft Ballew farm was fatally burned Tuseday afternoon, (3-Feb-1942 JJ) when his clothing caught afire from some unknown cause. Mr. Powell enveloped by flames was seen running in a pasture near the farm house, by Rav and Arnold Vanderford, who rushed to his assistance but he had fallen to the ground before they reached him, and he was in an unconscious state. Practically all clothing has been burned from his body. Aided by Everett Stamper, the two Vanerford boys took him to the house and he was given treatment by a doctor in Spickard and then removed to the Cullers hospital in Trenton where he died at 3:00 pm. Just how Mr. Powell's clothes caught afire is speculation. It was stated he has been working for Mrs. Ballew on the farm, but she had recently had a sale and quit farming operations. and Mr. Powell had planned to move elswhere in the near future. He was born August 8, 1889 near Modena, a son of Isaac and Loretta Sowders Powell. He married Hulda Vanderpool 28 years ago, who preceded him in death several months. Survivors include a son and three daughters, Viz; Mrs. Robert Wilson, of Spickard, Mrs. Claude Gibler, of Tarkio; a brother Jim Powell and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Cremeens, both of Trenton. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Salem church northwest of Mill Grove, and burial will be in the Salem cemetery, in charge of the services is the Schooler funeral service of Spickard. (I have 10 pages of ancestors and 59 pages of descendants)

    3. A notice for Walter Powell also appeared in the Trenton Republican Times. I know this is a list for Mercer Co., but Walter and the rest of his family were from Mercer Co., although he died in Trenton. I thought I would post it. I also have an obituary for Walter's wife Hulda, and his father Isaac if anyone is interested. Jerry, could you send me your file on Walter? He was my great-grandfather, but I haven't tracked down all his details yet. Thanks for your offer and I hope this helps someone! Robert J. Powell rjpowell72@yahoo.co.uk --------------------- Trenton Republican-Times; Wednesday, February 4, 1942: Mill Grove Man Dies In Trenton Of Burns Walter Powell of northwest of Mill Grove died at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Cullers hospital here as the result of severe burns he suffered earlier in the day. Mr. Powell, who was working outside his farm home Tuesday morning, attracted the attention of neighbors working about a quarter of a mile away by his screams. They saw him running through a pasture near the house with his clothing in flames. By the time they reached him, most of his clothes were burned from his body and he had fallen to the ground unconcious. He was taken to a doctor in Spickard for treatment and then brought to Cullers hospital. It is not known how his clothing caught on fire. Mr. Powell, who was 52 years old, was a son of Isaac and Loretta Powell and was born in Mercer county in 1889. He was married to Hulda Vanderpool who died this winter. He is survived by four children, Mrs. Thelma Gibler of Tarkio, Mrs. Beulah Wilson of Spickard, Wilma Dean Powell of the home; one sister, Mrs. Lily Cremeens of Trenton, and one brother, Jim Powell, also of Trenton. Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Thursday at Salem church west of Mill Grove and burial will be there. The body is at the Schooler Funeral Home in Spickard. Jerry Jones wrote: > > 1.
