He is in the 1860 Census of Mercer County. Thanks for any help. >> David, According to some Lindsey family history, Colonel Preston Underwood's wife was killed by lightening, leaving six children (John, George, Jim, Jeff, and Mary Ann). Preston's second wife was Elizabeth Hensley Lindsey, widow of William Newton Lindsey who died in 1852, leaving five young children. Elizabeth and Preston Underwood had six children together (Cassandra, Taneson, Artiness, Julia, Columbus, and Lucretia). In the 1870 Census they were living in Morgan Twp., Mercer Co., MO. The family history writer says, "Colonel Underwood was a quite typical southern gentleman. If he ever did a day's work in the field it was before I can remember, and I never heard of it. He always had a nice bunch of hogs. They had land on both sides of the road that ran past the house and the barn and hog lot were across the road from the house. The nearest "Pap" as we called him, came to working was to go across the road to feed the hogs. He always saw to it that they had plenty of meat and shortening. His step sons, the Lindsey boys, always called him Colonel. He had been a Colonel in a military organization in KY. Father said he could remember seeing his uniform. But his own children and all the grandchildren called him "Pap", no doubt a contradiction of pappy, then a common term for father." "Colonel Underwood was a Republican and always took Republican newspapers. Five of the Lindsey and Underwood boys were in the Union Army of the Civil War. Leander B. and Robert L. Lindsey; John, George, and Jim Underwood. Jim lost an eye in battle." The family history (undocumented) notes that in later years Taneson, Julia, and Columbus Underwood in later years all lived in Harrison Co., MO (adjoining Mercer Co.) and are buried there. Preston Underwood also died in Harrison Co. He is buried in the Weaver Chapel Cemetery, near his son Columbus S. Underwood, wife, and two children. Preston's monument inscription is: "Preston Underwood, husb. of E. died June 20, 1893 86y 6m Hope this helps. -Judy
