    2. Lena-- I am sorry you are having problems with the new boards. I know it is frustrating, but I suppose we will all get used to them eventually. In the meantime, try this: Go to: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.stat es.missouri.counties.mercer&maxrows=25&dir=next A short distance down the screen is a drop down menu called "view message type". Click on the type you want to look at: obituaries, queries, etc., and you will be taken to a list of messages for that particular board. Then you have to go down the list to the one which looks interesting to you and click on that to view the message. It will not give you the author's email address, but I believe if you print it out, you will get it (haven't tried it yet). If you want to go to a different board, go back to the "view message type," and choose the board you want. You can hit your "back" button at any time to go to the previous screen. Hope this helps. Good luck. Barbra

Nancy The main page is here: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=rw You do NOT need to join anything, or even log in, to run a search or read messages. And you don't have to join Ancestry to register/log in so that you can post. And once you HAVE registered, if you click the "Remember My Password" box, from then on all you need do is click on your name to log in. Quick as a flash. They are still moving some of the locality boards into their final logical positions, so occasionally the Find A Board won't work right. The early days were a bit rocky, but I've found everything working flawlessly lately. Valorie

    2. What's New With The Ancestry Message Boards Message from the Ancestry Home Office by Jake Gehring, Executive Producer Wow, what a week it has been. The messages have really been flying. In an effort to improve communication from Ancestry to you (and vice versa), I will be sending out a message every so often which addresses current issues on the Ancestry site. The Ancestry staff has received lots of questions since the merger of Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com last summer, and I think there's a general need for our users to have regular information on Ancestry's efforts to provide valuable services to the genealogical community. I also want to make a few comments about our new message boards system which was launched last week. We're grateful for the excellent feedback many of you have provided. The feedback has been generally positive when addressing the value of the combined datasets and the increased search functionality. However, I also recognize that any significant change requires some getting used to and may create some temporary inconvenience and frustration. I would like to address some of the concerns we've heard from you, the users. By popular request, we will shortly add the ability for users to filter by message category within a message board (for queries, obituaries, deeds, etc.). For the benefit of the message board administrators, we are extending the board re-adoption deadline from July 15 to July 23. There is some confusion about Ancestry's position regarding the ownership of messages posted on the boards. Let me clarify by excerpting from the Acceptable Use Policy, which reads, "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at Ancestry, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The same is true for those using the message boards at Ancestry.com. In short, if you posted it, you own it. As far as the message boards or any other Ancestry features are concerned, if you're not happy, we're not happy. Please continue to give us your comments and concerns at the Suggestions Message Board or at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi

    1. [MOMERCER-L] FYI-Message Boards II
    2. I had had so many responses/questions, I decided to try again with an explanation: Originally, there was a separate "board" for each category - query, wills, Bible records, etc. Now they have been combined into a "suite" where all goes under the category of Mercer Co. (or whatever county). I did not administer the board for query, thus I will not be administering the suite of boards. However, the Mercer Co. Query Page on our website has never been part of GenConnect, and will remain on our website where you can access the page to read or post queries. Hopefully, QueryExpress (the system used on our query page) will survive. Again, here is the URL for the Mercer Co. board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.st ates.missouri.counties.mercer When you go to this site, you will see that all the queries, obits, wills, etc., are all batched together. You can, by going to "View Message Type" select the category you are looking for - queries, wills, Bible records, marriages, obits, etc., on the drop down menu. You can also sort them by date. Now - to read anything out there takes nothing on your part. But, if you want to post a query, or reply to one that's there, you need to log in. Those of you who have ancestry.com passwords and users name can use this one. If you don't have one, you can choose one. This is free - has NOTHING to do with their boards where you have to pay. You can also print out the messages. When you hit post (either as a reply or a new post), a screen will pop up asking you to log in. Enter (or create) a username and password, you will be acknowledged, and then able to make your post. You will have to hit the back key to get back to the screen you are one. NOTE: This has a time out feature so if you come back 15 minutes later, you'll have to log in again. When you make a post, you will be given a screen where you enter the subject line, then the area to type in. Below that is surnames. List all the surnames you mentioned in the post in this format: ...... every name on the same line, separated by a comma and a space. Then choose the category please. There is a drop down box where you can chose the category you wish this to go to. Then hit submit. Two shortcuts: If you visit the Mercer Co. page often, look at the top of the page and you will see a place where it says "Add Board to Favorites". It will automatically take that URL and put it on your list of favorites. When you come back to this board and want to spin off to another favorite site, click on "My Favorites" and all your bookmarked sites will be there and clickable. There is a line near the top that is yellow. The first word is Boards. Click on that line and walk through your selection. You can go to another county by following through the selections there. You can also change the "View MessageType" . All this will take some practice and getting used to. It is supposed to make things easier, which, of course, is a matter of opinion. Someone asked, "Did Ancestry.com buy out Rootsweb?", and the answer is "Yes!". I cannot predict what will happen in the future, but I fear we may expect many changes such as this to come. Hopefully, it will not come to having to pay for our information. In the meantime, I want to concentrate on our Mercer Co. website. Remember, you can still post your queries by going to the Query page on our site. I will try to answer your questions if I can, but please be patient--I don't know much about it, either. Will try to find out anything I can. Thanks for your support and understanding. Barbra Mercer Co. Coordinator

    2. When you go to Rootsweb, the Queries GenConnect Boards for every county and surname take you directly to the new Message Boards. If you try to click to go to the Obituaries or Wills or the other separate Boards, you are taken to a generic index page forcing you to locate the county or surname. When you make a post or when using the new advance search feature, you can specify a topic/category (and there are new categories available) to search only those messages, but there are no longer any separate boards. The other thing is that, in order to POST anything, you MUST be registered. Be certain you are registering for using the Boards and not subscribing to Ancestry. If they ask for your credit card number, you are filling out the wrong form to register to use the new Message Boards <grin>! Also, try to remember to actually LOG OUT when you leave as that process sends some blank cookies into your browser's RAM memory. I am working on starting manual pages for our website, in which anyone wishing to have a Bio or Obit posted, could send them directly to me, and I would post them manually. Hope all this is not too confusing. Barbra Mercer Co. Coordinator

    2. Those of you who have in the past used the GenConnect Boards at Rootsweb on the Mercer Co. website for Bios and Obits will be interested to know they no longer exist. If you try to click to go to the Obituaries or Wills or the other separate Boards, you are taken to a generic index page forcing you to locate the county or surname. ALL those separate Boards were considered 'categories of messages' and all the messages were merged into a single message board along with all messages that had accumulated at FamilyHistory.Com.
